5x8 Rug: Rooms It Fits and Where It Falls Short

A 5x8 rug, 150x240 cm, covers 40 sq ft and suits a bedside, a study, a small hall or a reading corner. It is too small to hold a living room seating group, and that is where most 5x8 mistakes happen.

In short

  • A 5x8 ft rug measures 150x240 cm and covers 40 sq ft, roughly the footprint of a queen bed with a little to spare.
  • A 5x8 ft rug works best for one activity: at the foot of a bed, under a desk and chair, in a small entrance hall or in a reading corner with one chair.
  • A 5x8 ft rug is too small for a living room with a three seater sofa, because the sofa alone is about 7 ft wide.
  • At Rugberry, the Kora Jute Rug starts from about ₹28,000 and the Grain Wool Rug in flax from about ₹37,000 in 5x8 ft.

How big is a 5x8 rug in a real room?

A 5x8 rug is 5 ft wide and 8 ft long, which is 150x240 cm or 40 sq ft of floor. On paper that sounds generous.

Set it against furniture and the picture changes. A standard Indian queen bed is about 5 ft by 6.5 ft, a three seater sofa about 7 ft wide, and a desk with its chair pulled out needs about 4 ft by 5 ft. The 5x8 sits between these numbers, which is why it dresses part of a room rather than the whole of it.

Which rooms does a 5x8 rug fit?

A 5x8 rug fits a room, or a corner of one, built around a single activity. Getting out of bed, working at a desk, taking off shoes and reading in one chair all fall inside 40 sq ft.

  • Bedroom. Laid crosswise at the foot of a queen bed, with the 8 ft side running across, a 5x8 shows about 1.5 ft of rug on each side of the bed and gives bare feet somewhere soft to land.
  • Study or home office. Lay the 8 ft side along the desk. The 5 ft depth keeps the back legs of the chair on the rug when you push back to stand.
  • Entrance hall. In an apartment lobby of about 7x10 ft, a 5x8 leaves roughly a foot of floor on every side, enough to frame it.
  • Reading corner. One armchair, a side table and a lamp sit comfortably on a 5x8 with room to stretch your legs.

Where does a 5x8 rug fall short?

A 5x8 rug falls short in any living room arranged around a three seater sofa. The sofa is about 7 ft wide, so an 8 ft rug barely clears its arms, and 5 ft of depth rarely reaches the chairs opposite.

The rug ends up floating in the middle of the floor, and the room looks smaller rather than more finished. The same thing happens under a dining table for four, where a 3x4 ft table needs about 7x8 ft of rug once the chairs pull back.

For a living room, choose a 6x9 rug over a 5x8, because the rug needs to reach at least the front legs of every seat. Under a king bed, a 5x8 is lost entirely.

A 5x8 rug serves one activity, such as waking, working or reading. It rarely holds a whole room.

How do you test a 5x8 rug before you buy?

Mark 150x240 cm on the floor with masking tape and live with the outline for two days. Walk around it, pull out the desk chair, step off the bed on to it.

Watch for three things. Chair legs that drop off the edge when the chair moves back, a door that catches as it swings over the rug, and less than 30 cm of floor between the rug and a wall, which makes a rug look squeezed.

Any one of these says change the size or the placement. On vitrified tile and polished marble, plan for an underlay too, because a small rug creeps more than a large one that is pinned by furniture.

Which Rugberry rugs come in 5x8?

Most of the Rugberry range is stocked in 5x8 ft, from jute flatweaves to wool and silk. Three suit the rooms above particularly well.

Kora Jute Rug

The Kora Jute Rug is handwoven in jute, firm and textured, from about ₹28,000. It suits a study or an entrance where shoes come off. Keep it away from bathroom doors and damp corners, since jute does not like water.

Grain Wool Rug in flax

The Grain Wool Rug in flax is handloom woven in New Zealand wool with a low, closely worked surface, from about ₹37,000. A desk chair moves over it more easily than over a deep pile, which makes it a good study rug.

Cabella Wool & Silk Rug in latte

The Cabella in latte is hand tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, with a low sheen that shifts as the light moves, from about ₹41,000. It belongs beside a bed, where the first step of the morning is barefoot.

Should you choose a 5x8 or size up?

Size up when the rug has to hold more than one piece of furniture you sit on. Stay with 5x8 when the rug serves one person doing one thing.

Room Typical floor Does a 5x8 work?
Bedroom, foot of a queen bed 10x12 ft Yes, laid crosswise
Study with desk and chair 9x10 ft Yes
Apartment entrance hall 7x10 ft Yes, with a foot of floor around it
Living room with a three seater 11x14 ft No, choose 6x9 or 8x10
Dining table for four 10x10 ft No, choose 8x10

If a room sits between sizes, most Rugberry designs can be made to any size and colour through the customisable rugs route, so you are not forced to round down.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5x8 rug big enough for a living room?

Only for a small sitting area with a two seater or a pair of chairs. With a 7 ft three seater, a 5x8 rug floats in front of the sofa and makes the room look smaller, so a 6x9 or 8x10 is the better choice.

What is a 5x8 rug in centimetres?

A 5x8 rug is 150x240 cm. It covers 40 sq ft, or about 3.7 square metres of floor.

Can a 5x8 rug go under a bed?

It works crosswise at the foot of a queen or double bed, or fully under a single bed. Under a king bed it is too small, and a 9x12 or two side rugs work better.

Which 5x8 rug suits a study?

A low, closely woven rug suits a study, because a desk chair rolls and slides over it without catching. A handloom wool rug such as the Grain Wool Rug is a steady choice.
