Rugberry Rug Guide
Choose a rug by its fibre first, then its construction, then its texture, and only then its colour. Fibre decides how a rug feels, wears and ages, so it is the one choice you cannot change later.
For most Indian living rooms that means a Terra grade wool rug, handloom or hand tufted, in a texture that hides daily marks. For bedrooms, choose a Fina fibre such as merino, or a soft deep pile. For rooms that rest more than they work, a wool and Botanical Silk blend adds a low sheen. Rugberry, a weaving family since 1947, names every rug by fibre, grade and construction, so you can compare rugs the way you would compare cloth. This guide gathers every Rugberry guide in one place. Words you meet along the way are defined in the rug glossary.
Which fibre should you choose?
Nine natural fibres sit in three grades. The table compares them on the four things that matter most in a home.
| Fibre | Grade | Softness | Durability | Sheen | Where to use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Zealand wool | I, Terra | Soft, springy | High | Low, natural | Living rooms, dining rooms, family spaces |
| Lincoln wool | I, Terra | Firm, smooth | High | Natural lustre | Living rooms, hallways |
| Jute | I, Terra | Firm, textured | Good when kept dry | Soft golden | Living rooms, dining areas, dry rooms |
| Merino | II, Fina | Very soft | Good | Low | Bedrooms, quiet sitting rooms |
| Silk | II, Fina | Cool, smooth | Moderate | High | Bedrooms, formal rooms |
| Botanical Silk | Plant-based, named on its own | Smooth | Moderate, best away from spills | High | Rooms that rest, blended with wool for sheen |
| Mohair, alpaca, cashmere, llama | III, Rara | Soft to very soft | Good, llama the hardiest | Low to high | Rugberry Reserve, made to measure |
Which construction should you choose?
| Construction | How it is made | At Rugberry |
|---|---|---|
| Handloom | Woven row by row on a hand and foot loom, no glued backing | Most of the Studio Collection: Plush, Grain, Meraki, Insignia, Luma, Cashmere Blend, Cabra |
| Hand knotted | Each knot tied by hand around the warp | Savannah, in jute |
| Hand tufted | Yarn punched through cloth with a hand-held tufting gun, then sheared | Many designs and made to measure orders |
| Hand woven | Warp and weft interlaced by hand, flat or textured | Flat and reversible pieces, made to measure orders |
