Oblique, Monochrome and Outline: Graphic Wool Rugs

Oblique, Monochrome and Outline are Rugberry rugs hand tufted in New Zealand wool, each drawn in line on an ivory ground: Oblique and Monochrome in charcoal or black, Outline in camel. Choose by how much contrast the room can take, because that, not the fibre, is what separates them.

In short

  • Oblique, Monochrome and Outline are hand tufted in New Zealand wool, a Terra grade fibre, and Rugberry lists all three as everyday rugs for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Oblique is ruled on the diagonal from corner to corner in ivory and charcoal; Monochrome is ivory and black; Outline is drawn in outline only, in ivory and camel, with the field left open.
  • An 8x10 ft rug costs ₹74,000 for Oblique, ₹76,000 for Monochrome and ₹79,000 for Outline, regular prices ex GST at the time of writing.
  • For a calm room choose Outline; for a graphic room with plain furniture choose Oblique or Monochrome.

What makes a wool rug graphic?

A wool rug reads as graphic when a dark line sits on a pale ground with nothing in between, so the drawing does all the work. Oblique, Monochrome and Outline have no shading, no border and no gradient, only line and field.

That clarity is what makes them useful. In a room of plain sofas, white walls and pale floors, a line rug gives structure the way a good artwork does, without adding another colour to manage. In a room already full of print, the same rug can fight with everything.

All three are hand tufted: yarn is worked through a backing cloth by hand, then sheared and finished, which lets the line stay crisp at the edge. Rugberry's guide to black and white rugs covers the wider style, and the guide to patterned and plain rugs helps when you are unsure a pattern belongs at all.

How do Oblique, Monochrome and Outline compare?

The three share fibre and construction and differ in colour, contrast and how the line meets the edge. The table compares them at regular prices ex GST, at the time of writing.

For a family living room with a light sofa and kids, choose Outline over the other two, because a camel line on ivory hides daily marks better than black on ivory. For a room designed in black, white and grey, choose Monochrome.

Where does Oblique work, and how should it be laid?

Oblique works in living rooms with plain, low furniture, where its diagonal lines lead the eye across the floor and make the room feel wider. Rugberry describes it as ruled on the diagonal from corner to corner, in ivory and charcoal.

The diagonal is the point to plan around. Laid square to the sofa, the lines cut across the seating at an angle and pull the room towards one corner, usually the window or the balcony door. Decide which corner you want the eye to go to, then turn the rug so the lines point that way.

In a 13x16 ft living room, an 8x10 ft Oblique under a three seater and two chairs leaves about 2.5 ft of floor at each side. Keep the coffee table simple, glass or a solid timber block, so the lines show through. Rugberry's guide to living room rug sizes gives the measurements for other layouts.

When is Monochrome the right choice?

Monochrome is the right choice when the room is already designed in black, white and grey, because its black line on ivory is the strongest contrast of the three and ties every dark object in the room together. It suits studies, formal sitting rooms and modern apartments with black metal fittings.

Black and ivory in wool shows more than any other pairing. Dust settles visibly on the ivory and lint shows on the black, so Monochrome rewards a home where shoes come off at the door and someone vacuums twice a week. In a dusty ground floor flat near a main road, choose Outline instead.

Lay Monochrome on a pale floor, white marble or light grey tile, and keep the wall colour off white. On a dark wood floor the black passages disappear into the floor and the ivory floats, which can look unfinished. Rugberry's guide to forgiving rug colours explains why high contrast shows wear sooner.

A line rug is only as calm as its contrast. Decide the contrast first, then the drawing.

Why is Outline the softest of the three?

Outline is the softest of the three because its camel line on ivory is close in tone and leaves most of the field open, so from across the room it reads almost plain. Rugberry describes it as drawn in outline only, with the field left open.

That open field is useful in a bedroom. Under a bed, most of a rug is hidden, so a busy pattern is wasted and a plain one can look flat; a few drawn lines that reappear at the sides of the bed give just enough interest where your feet land.

Camel also sits well with the warm woods and cane common in Indian homes, from teak beds to sheesham sideboards. Outline is shown at a partner store in 8x10 ft; the store locator lists where. Rugberry's guide to bedroom rug sizes covers placement around queen and king beds.

How do these rugs behave on Indian floors?

On pale marble and light vitrified tile, all three look crisp, because the ivory ground sits close to the floor and the line stands out. On dark wood, red oxide or black granite, only Outline looks settled; Oblique and Monochrome break into stripes floating on a dark field.

  • White marble. Any of the three. Monochrome gives the sharpest effect.
  • Beige vitrified tile. Oblique or Outline. Pure black on beige can look harsh.
  • Grey granite or concrete finish. Oblique, whose charcoal ties to the grey.
  • Teak or walnut. Outline, whose camel line picks up the wood.
  • Kota or Jaisalmer stone. Outline or Oblique, tested with a swatch first.

Ivory wool needs a non-slip underlay on polished stone and tile, both for safety and to stop the rug creeping. Rugberry's guide to rugs for dark floors covers the darker cases in more depth.

How do you keep an ivory and black rug looking clean?

Keep a graphic wool rug clean by vacuuming twice a week, rotating it every six months and blotting spills at once, then leaving deep cleaning to a professional. The care note on all three product pages is to vacuum regularly and use professional cleaning only.

New Zealand wool helps. Its natural lanolin coating resists light spills for a few seconds, which is time to blot.

Work from the edge of the spill inward with a white cloth, and never rub black into ivory. For turmeric or tea on the ivory, blot, then call a cleaner rather than reaching for bleach.

Rotation matters more on a line rug than on a plain one, because uneven fading or wear shows as a break in the line. Turn the rug end to end twice a year, and more often if one end sits in afternoon sun.

See Oblique, Monochrome and Outline, or browse the pattern rugs and the charcoal and black rugs. Each is listed in any size and colour to order, so a softer line colour is always an option.

Which graphic rug suits which kind of Indian home?

The right graphic rug depends as much on the home as on the room: its floor, its light, its dust and who lives in it. Four common cases show how the choice changes.

Outline Wool Rug, the soft contrast that suits a busy family home.
Outline Wool Rug, the soft contrast that suits a busy family home.

A two bedroom apartment in Pune or Bengaluru with beige vitrified tile, white walls and a grey fabric sofa suits Oblique in 8x10 ft. The charcoal ties to the sofa, the diagonal opens a compact living room, and the ivory sits easily on beige.

A sea facing flat in Mumbai with white marble, cane chairs and strong west light suits Outline. Camel on ivory stays warm in the evening glare, and a softer contrast copes better with salt air dust blown in through open windows.

A builder floor in Delhi or Gurgaon with dark wood flooring and a black and brass scheme suits Outline in a custom colour, or a darker ground ordered to measure, because ivory with black floats awkwardly on dark wood.

A designer led villa with polished white stone, black steel windows and a strict monochrome palette is where Monochrome earns its place, in 10x14 or 12x15 ft under a large seating group. The scale lets the line read as architecture rather than decoration.

Whichever you choose, order a swatch first and check it at night under your own lamps, because ivory wool can read cool white or warm cream depending on the bulb.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Oblique, Monochrome and Outline rugs made of?

All three are hand tufted in New Zealand wool, which Rugberry grades as Terra, Grade I. Wool gives a springy pile that recovers after footsteps, which suits everyday living rooms and bedrooms.

Which graphic rug is easiest to keep clean?

Outline is the easiest of the three to keep looking clean, because its camel line on ivory is lower in contrast than black or charcoal on ivory. Daily dust and small marks show less on a soft contrast.

Does a diagonal rug make a room look bigger?

A diagonal line rug such as Oblique can make a room feel wider, because the lines lead the eye across the floor towards a corner. Turn the rug so the lines point towards the window or the longest view.

Can I order Oblique or Monochrome in another colour?

Yes. Rugberry lists Oblique, Monochrome and Outline in any size and any colour to order. A softer line colour keeps the drawing while lowering the contrast for a calmer room.

How much does a graphic wool rug cost at Rugberry?

Within a few thousand rupees of each other. The difference across the three is small enough that the choice should come from the line, not the price: Oblique is the least expensive at 8x10 ft and Outline the most, with 5x8 ft from ₹37,000, regular prices ex GST at the time of writing.
