A Rug for a Floor Bed or Low Platform Bed

For a low platform bed, lay a large rug under the bed so it shows 2 to 3 ft on each side and at the foot. For a mattress directly on the floor, keep the mattress off the rug and lay the rug around it, so air can reach the mattress base.

In short

  • A low platform bed suits a rug that extends 24 to 36 inches beyond the bed on both sides and at the foot, usually 8x10 ft for a queen bed and 9x12 ft for a king.
  • A mattress placed directly on the floor should not sit on a pile rug, because the rug traps moisture under the mattress in humid Indian weather.
  • With a low bed, the rug is seen at eye level from the bed, so its texture and colour matter more than in a bedroom with a tall bed.
  • Rugberry's Plush Wool Rug in Ivory is handloom New Zealand wool at 18 to 20 mm, with a regular price of ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft ex GST at the time of writing.

How is a rug for a low bed different?

A rug for a low bed is different because it is seen from close up and from bed height, and because a low bed shows much more of the rug around it. The rug becomes part of the bed's design.

Low beds have become common in Indian homes that lean toward Japandi and minimalist interiors: a timber platform 6 to 10 inches high, or a mattress on a tatami style base. They make a room feel larger and calmer, because the eye travels over them rather than stopping at a tall frame.

That openness puts the floor on show. With a tall bed, much of the rug disappears in shadow under the frame. With a low bed, every inch around it is visible, so proportion, texture and the rug's edges all matter more.

The other difference is practical. A bed that sits on or near the floor changes how air moves under the mattress, and in coastal and monsoon climates that matters for both the mattress and the rug. Rugberry's guide to rug layouts under a bed covers taller beds; this piece is about the low ones.

Should the rug go under or around a floor bed?

A rug should go under a raised platform bed and around a mattress that sits directly on the floor. The difference is airflow: a mattress needs air beneath it, and a pile rug blocks it.

A platform bed with even a few inches of open space under the slats lets air circulate, so the rug can run fully beneath it. The bed then floats on a soft field of wool, which is the look most people want.

A mattress laid straight on the floor is another matter. Body heat and humidity collect under it, and on a wool rug that moisture has nowhere to go. In Mumbai, Chennai or Kochi in the monsoon, that can lead to musty smells in the rug and mould on the mattress base.

The answer is to keep the mattress on a slatted base or a breathable mat and lay the rug around it, starting a few inches from the mattress edge. The verdict: if the mattress touches the floor, the rug should not touch the mattress.

What size rug fits a low platform bed?

A low queen platform bed fits an 8x10 ft rug and a king fits 9x12 ft, laid so the rug shows 24 to 36 inches on both sides and at the foot. Low beds look better with more rug showing, not less.

With a tall bed, many people use a rug under the lower two thirds only. With a low bed, that half covered look is less successful, because the cut off line under the bed is visible. Running the rug under the whole bed, or most of it, gives a cleaner result.

Bed Typical size in India Rug under a platform Rug around a floor mattress
Single 3x6.5 ft 5x8 ft A 2.5x8 ft runner on the open side
Queen 5x6.5 ft 8x10 ft Two runners on the sides or a 5x8 ft at the foot
King 6x6.5 ft 9x12 ft Two runners or a made to measure U shape
Two singles pushed together 6x6.5 ft 9x12 ft Runners on both sides
Platform wider than the mattress Varies Rug at least 4 ft wider than the platform Not applicable

Measure the platform, not the mattress. Many Japandi platforms extend 6 to 12 inches beyond the mattress on each side, which changes the rug size needed.

Which pile height suits a low bed?

A medium to deep pile suits a low bed, from about 12 to 20 mm. People step off a low bed straight onto the rug, often barefoot, and the softness is felt every morning.

The Plush Wool Rug in Ivory is handloom New Zealand wool with a deep 18 to 20 mm pile. Its regular price is ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft and ₹1,06,000 for 9x12 ft, ex GST at the time of writing. An ivory field around a pale timber platform gives the quiet, layered look many Japandi bedrooms are after.

For a finer feel, the Cashmere Blend Rug in Taupe is a handloom wool and cashmere blend at 16 mm, dense and very soft. It is listed at ₹1,08,000 for 8x10 ft and ₹1,46,000 for 9x12 ft before GST.

A lower option is the Grain Wool Rug in Tan, handloom wool at 12 to 14 mm, at ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft ex GST. It is easier to keep in a home with pets or a child who plays on the bedroom floor.

What about a bed with storage drawers?

A low bed with drawers in its base needs the rug to stop short of the drawer fronts, or to be low enough that the drawers glide over it. A deep pile under a drawer catches the bottom edge every time it opens.

Open each drawer fully before deciding where the rug's edge falls. Usually a rug that starts just beyond the open drawer, or a low 12 to 14 mm pile running underneath, solves it.

What colours suit a low bed and a rug together?

Choose a rug a shade or two away from the bedding, lighter or darker, so the bed reads as a separate layer. When rug and bedding are the same colour, a low bed seems to melt into the floor.

A pale oak platform with white linen on an ivory rug can look beautiful, but only if the textures differ clearly. A deep pile against crisp cotton gives enough contrast. Two flat, identical whites look unfinished.

With a low bed, the rug is the first thing your feet find and the last thing you see at night.

Warm mid tones such as taupe, tan and camel are the safest choice under a dark walnut or sheesham platform. They separate the wood from the floor and hide the dust that collects at floor level more easily than ivory does.

Rugberry's note on the Japandi rug explains the wider palette of this style, and the bedroom rugs collection shows pieces in these tones side by side.

How do you keep the floor under a low bed clean?

Keep the floor under a low bed clean with a slim vacuum head, a monthly lift of the mattress and a rug pad that lets you slide the rug out. Dust collects faster at floor level.

Low beds have little clearance, often under 4 inches. Most upright vacuum heads will not reach under them, so a flat attachment or a slim cordless head is worth having. Run it under the bed weekly, along the rug's pile.

Once a month, lift the mattress, air it and vacuum the platform slats. In humid months this is also when you check the mattress base and the rug beneath for any damp smell. If there is one, air the rug in shade on a dry day.

A thin pad helps here in another way. It lets you slide the rug out from under a light platform for a proper clean without lifting the whole bed. Rugberry's guide to preventing mould in rugs covers humid cities in detail.

Can a low bed sit on a made to measure rug?

Yes, a made to measure rug suits a low bed well, because platform sizes vary so much. A rug cut to show an even 30 inches around the platform looks considered rather than approximate.

Many custom platforms are built into alcoves or against a full wall of wardrobes, leaving uneven margins on each side. A rug made to the room rather than to a standard size can balance those margins, or follow an L shaped alcove.

For a mattress on the floor, a made to measure U shaped rug or two matched runners can surround the bed on three sides without sitting under it. This keeps the soft landing for your feet and the airflow for the mattress.

Rugberry makes the Plush, Grain and Cashmere Blend rugs to measure. Mark the outline on the floor with painter's tape, sleep with it for a few nights, and adjust before ordering. The Cashmere collection shows the finest of the three.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a mattress directly on a rug?

It is better not to put a mattress directly on a pile rug, especially in humid weather, because moisture collects underneath. Use a slatted base or a breathable mat and lay the rug around it instead.

What size rug goes under a low king bed?

A low king platform bed usually needs a 9x12 ft rug, so the rug shows 24 to 36 inches beyond the bed on both sides and at the foot. Measure the platform rather than the mattress, as platforms are often wider.

Is a deep pile rug good next to a floor bed?

A deep pile rug is very comfortable beside a floor bed because you step straight onto it. In homes with pets or young children, a medium pile around 12 to 14 mm is easier to keep clean.

How do I clean under a low platform bed?

Use a slim vacuum attachment weekly and lift the mattress monthly to air it and clean the slats. A thin rug pad also lets you slide the rug out for a deeper clean.

Should the rug be lighter or darker than the bedding?

The rug should be a shade or two lighter or darker than the bedding, or very different in texture, so the low bed reads as its own layer. Warm mid tones hide floor level dust best.
