Choosing the First Rugs for a New Home

Buy the living room rug first, then the master bedroom, then the dining room, and leave passages and spare rooms for last. The first rug sets the colour of the house, so choose it after the sofa and curtains are fixed, not before.

In short

  • The best first rug for a new home in India is the living room rug, usually 8x10 ft for a three seater sofa with two chairs, or 6x9 ft in a compact 2BHK.
  • A sensible buying order is living room, master bedroom, dining room, then children's rooms, study and passages, spread over the first year.
  • Rugberry's Studio Collection rugs held in stock ship ready for a move in date; any other size or colour is made to measure, and handloom rugs made to order take around 35 days.
  • Choose the first rug in a neutral, textured New Zealand wool such as the Rugberry Grain or Arctic, so later rugs in other rooms can take more colour.

Which room should get the first rug in a new home?

The living room should get the first rug, because it is the room guests see, the room with the most furniture to anchor and the room whose colours the rest of the house will answer. A good living room rug also makes a half furnished house feel settled.

In a new flat, sound is the first thing you notice. Bare vitrified tile and marble throw every footstep and voice back into the room, and a dense wool rug of 8x10 ft takes much of that echo out. That alone is a reason to buy it before the cushions and the art.

Fix the sofa first. A rug bought before the sofa is chosen is a guess about size and colour, and the sofa will be with you longer than the paint.

The living room rug also does practical work in an Indian home. It takes the first dust from the balcony and the main door, gives children a soft floor to sit on during festive gatherings, and stops the coffee table scratching new marble.

If the budget allows only one good rug in the first year, this is the one. A bedroom can wait a few months with a bare floor; a living room with guests arriving cannot.

In what order should you buy rugs across the house?

Buy in order of use: the rooms you are in every day come first, the rooms you pass through come last. Spread across a year, this order also spreads the cost of a new home.

Order Room Typical size Why now Fibre to consider
1 Living room 8x10 ft, or 6x9 ft in a 2BHK Anchors the seating, cuts echo, sets the colour Handloom or hand tufted New Zealand wool
2 Master bedroom 8x10 ft under a king bed, 6x9 ft under a queen The first step of every day A deeper wool pile, such as Plush at 18 to 20 mm
3 Dining room 8x10 ft for four seats, 9x12 ft for six Protects the floor from chair legs A low, firm weave that lets chairs slide
4 Children's room 5x8 ft or 6x9 ft Floor play, softer falls Wool, or a reversible that turns over
5 Study 5x8 ft Quiet underfoot, chair on castors A flat or low pile weave
6 Entrance and passages Runner, or a custom size Last, once traffic patterns are clear Jute or a wool and jute blend

Our guide on how many rugs a home needs explains which rooms can go without one.

What size rug does each room of a new home need?

Size each rug to the furniture, not the room: in a living room the front legs of every seat sit on the rug, under a bed the rug shows about 2 ft beyond each side, and under a dining table it runs about 2 ft past every chair. Those three rules cover most of a house.

Living room

A three seater sofa with two chairs facing it needs 8x10 ft. A two seater with one chair in a compact living room of about 150 sq ft can take 6x9 ft. Our living room rug size guide has the layouts.

Master bedroom

A king bed of 6x6.5 ft wants an 8x10 ft rug laid across it, starting just below the bedside tables. A queen bed takes 6x9 ft placed the same way.

Dining room

A four seat table of about 3x5 ft needs 8x10 ft; a six seater needs 9x12 ft. If the rug is smaller, the back chair legs catch the edge every time someone stands.

Mark each size on the floor with masking tape before you buy. A day of walking around the tape tells you more than any calculation.

What should the first rug look like?

The first rug should be quiet: a neutral or tonal colour, a texture you can feel, and no strong pattern. A calm first rug lets every rug that follows take more colour without a clash.

The Arctic Wool Rug, hand tufted New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, pale with black marks, is a good first rug for a modern living room with grey or beige sofas. The Grain Wool Rug in Flax, handloom New Zealand wool at 12 to 14 mm, gives a warm, closely worked surface that hides dust and footprints.

Let the first rug be the calm one. The rooms that follow can be braver.

For a bedroom, the Plush Wool Rug in Ivory, handloom New Zealand wool at 18 to 20 mm, is soft enough for the first step out of bed. For a dining room or passage, the Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Sand is a firm handloom weave at 7 to 8 mm that chairs slide across. Our note on matching rugs across rooms shows how to keep them related.

How do you time rug buying around a move in date?

Time it in two tracks: rugs in stock for the rooms you need on day one, and made to measure rugs for rooms with odd sizes or a colour you want to match. Rugberry's Studio Collection is held in stock in six standard sizes, ready to ship, and handloom rugs made to order take around 35 days.

  • Six to eight weeks before moving: measure the living room and bedroom with the furniture plan in hand. Order swatches for the colours you are unsure of.
  • Five weeks before: place any made to measure order, so a handloom rug made to order has its 35 days or so.
  • Two weeks before: confirm stock for standard sizes with the Rugberry team, since stock is held colour by colour and size by size. Our guide to the six in stock sizes explains how to check.
  • After moving in: live in the house for a month before buying rugs for the passages and spare rooms.

Lay new rugs only after the painters and the floor polishers have finished. Paint drips and polishing dust are much harder to lift from wool than from tile.

How should a new home rug budget be spread?

Spend the largest share on the living room rug, a slightly smaller share on the master bedroom, and keep the rest for later rooms. A rough split of 40, 30 and 30 percent works for most homes.

At regular price, ex GST, an 8x10 ft Grain Wool Rug is ₹74,000 and an 8x10 ft Plush Wool Rug is ₹79,000; a 6x9 ft Grain is ₹51,000. Seasonal sale prices may be lower. Our guide to buying your first handmade rug covers what to check before you pay.

A single good rug in the living room does more than four small ones spread across the house. If the budget is tight, buy one rug well and wait for the rest.

What mistakes do new homeowners make with rugs?

The most common mistakes are buying too small, buying before the furniture, and buying every rug in the first month. Each one is easy to avoid with a tape measure and a little patience.

  • Too small. A 5x8 ft rug floating in front of a large sofa makes a new living room look unfinished. If the sofa's front legs do not reach the rug, go up a size. Our list of rug size mistakes covers the rest.
  • Before the furniture. A rug chosen before the sofa is a guess. Wait until the main pieces are ordered.
  • All at once. Rugs for passages and spare rooms are easier to choose once you know where people actually walk.
  • Ignoring the floor. Marble and vitrified tile are slippery under a rug; add an underlay from the start.
  • Forgetting the light. A colour chosen under a shop's lighting can look different in a west facing room at five. Check a swatch at home.

New floors also need a few weeks to settle after polishing. Lay rugs once the floor is fully dry, and keep heavy furniture off fresh grout lines for the first days.

Frequently asked questions

Which rug should I buy first for a new flat?

Buy the living room rug first, in a size that holds the front legs of every seat: usually 8x10 ft, or 6x9 ft in a compact 2BHK. It anchors the room, cuts echo on hard floors and sets the colour for every other rug.

Is a rug a good housewarming gift?

A rug can be a good housewarming gift if you know the room size and the family's colours; otherwise a swatch or a smaller 5x8 ft rug for a study or child's room is safer. Rugberry's guide to giving a rug as a gift covers sizes that rarely go wrong.

Should all the rugs in a new home match?

No. Rugs in a home should be related, through a shared fibre, tone or texture, rather than identical. Rooms that open onto each other need the closest relationship.

How long does a made to measure Rugberry rug take?

Handloom rugs made to order take around 35 days, according to Rugberry. The product page for each rug gives its making time, and delivery within India is free.

Can I buy a rug before the furniture arrives?

You can, but it is better to buy once the sofa and bed sizes are fixed, because the rug is sized to the furniture. If you must buy early, mark the furniture outline on the floor with tape first.

One rug, well chosen, makes a new house feel lived in. Start with the Grain collection or the living room rugs. Material first.
