Buying Your First Handmade Rug: Where to Start

Start with a wool rug with a low or even surface, in a stock size, for the room you use most. Wool is the most forgiving fibre for a first handmade rug, and a simple construction lets you learn how a rug lives before you spend on silk or hand knotting.

In short

  • Wool is the best fibre for a first handmade rug because it is springy, takes dye well and can be blotted clean.
  • A handloom wool rug such as the Rugberry Grain Wool Rug, from about ₹37,000 in 5x8 ft, is a forgiving first choice for a living or dining room.
  • Jute, such as the Kora Jute Rug, is a lower cost first rug for an entrance, but it is firm and dislikes water.
  • Keep silk blends and hand-knotted pieces for a second rug, once you know how your home uses a rug.

Where should a first handmade rug go?

Put it in the room you use most, usually the living room. That is where you will notice it every day and learn what you like in a rug: softness, colour, how it looks after a month of guests.

A bedroom rug is the gentler start if the living room takes heavy traffic or a dog. Either way, one good rug in the right room teaches you more than three small ones scattered around the home.

Which fibre is most forgiving?

Wool. The fibre is springy, so it recovers from footsteps and furniture, and its natural lanolin helps it shrug off light spills if you blot quickly. It also takes dye evenly, so colours stay steady across the rug.

No rug is stain proof, wool included. What wool gives you is time: a spill of chai, blotted within a minute, usually lifts from wool where it would mark silk or jute.

Which construction suits a beginner?

A handloom wool rug with a low surface. The Grain Wool Rug in tan is handloom woven in New Zealand wool, low and closely textured with the weave visible underfoot, so it does not flatten into tracks and is easy to vacuum.

A hand-tufted wool rug is the other good start, softer and with more pile. Choose handloom over tufted for a first rug if the room has a dining table or a lot of traffic, because a low surface shows wear less; choose tufted if you sit on the floor and want softness.

Is jute a good first rug?

Jute is a good first rug for an entrance or a passage, and a lower cost one. The Kora Jute Rug is handwoven in jute, firm and textured, from about ₹28,000 in 5x8 ft.

It is not the right first rug for a living room where people sit on the floor, because it is firm rather than soft. Jute also marks when wet, so keep it clear of bathroom doors and monsoon balconies.

When is wool and silk a good first rug?

When the rug is for a bedroom or a quiet sitting room, with bare feet and light traffic. The Cabella Wool & Silk Rug in latte is hand tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, soft, with a low sheen that shifts as you cross the room.

Silk catches light and shows footprints, which is its charm and its demand. If this is your only rug and it sits in a busy living room, start with plain wool and keep silk for later.

What size should a first rug be?

Choose a stock size that fits the furniture group, and resist going small to save money. A 5x8 ft suits a two seater; a 6x9 ft suits a three seater in most 2BHK living rooms.

Before ordering, mark the outline on the floor with masking tape and leave it for a day. Walk around it, pull the chairs up to it and see whether the edges sit where you expected.

A rug that is too small looks like a mistake whatever it cost. If your budget forces a choice, pick a larger size in a simpler wool over a smaller size in a finer fibre.

What should you expect in the first months?

Expect some loose fibre in the vacuum at first, which is normal shedding from a new wool rug and settles with use. Expect the pile to show light and dark patches as people walk, which is pile direction, not damage.

Vacuum it once or twice a week with suction only, and keep a clean white cloth near the rug for spills. Blot from the edge of the spill inward, and never rub, because rubbing pushes the stain into the base of the pile.

Rotate the rug end to end every few months so sun and traffic spread evenly. Our introduction to Rugberry explains how the range is built.
