All Legs, Front Legs or Floating: Rug Layouts
All legs on the rug suits a large room where the seating floats; front legs on suits most Indian living rooms; a floating rug suits small rooms and low seating. Which one is right depends on your furniture, not on a fixed rule.
In short
- With all legs on the rug, every piece of seating stands fully on it; this usually needs a 9x12 or 10x14 ft rug for a three plus one plus one sofa set.
- With front legs on, the rug runs about 15 to 20 cm under the front legs of each seat; this usually needs 8x10 ft for the same set.
- With a floating rug, no furniture touches it; it should still come within about 15 cm of the sofa so the group reads as one.
- Rugberry makes the Congrand, Greige and Arctic wool rugs in six stock sizes from 5x8 to 12x15 ft, so any of the three layouts can be met.
Our rug placement guide introduces the three layouts. This Rugberry guide goes further into each, using the furniture found in Indian homes.
When should all the legs sit on the rug?
Put all legs on the rug when the sofa set floats away from the walls and the room is at least 14x16 ft. The rug then defines a room within the room, and every seat shares one floor.

For a three plus one plus one set arranged around a coffee table, that usually needs 9x12 ft, and 10x14 ft if the set is generously spaced. Leave 30 to 45 cm of rug behind the back legs of each piece so it does not look perched on the edge.
This layout gives the calmest result and keeps the furniture steady. It is also the most expensive, since a 10x14 ft rug covers 140 sq ft against 80 sq ft for 8x10 ft.
Why is front legs on the most forgiving layout?
Front legs on works with almost any sofa set and any room above about 11x13 ft, because the rug only has to reach the front of each seat. The back legs stand on the floor.

Slide the rug 15 to 20 cm under the front legs of the sofa and both chairs. Any less and a chair dragged forward will leave the rug; much more and you have nearly paid for all legs on.
People sometimes worry that the sofa will tilt. A rug of 14 to 16 mm lifts the front legs slightly, but sofa cushions and frame absorb that, and the tilt is rarely noticeable once someone sits down.
Front legs on is the layout that forgives an imperfect room.
When does a floating rug work?
A floating rug works when the room is small, the sofa stands against a wall, or the seating is low. The rug sits in front of the seating without any furniture on it.

The rule for a floating rug is closeness. Keep its edge within about 15 cm of the sofa's front legs, and the coffee table fully on the rug, so the group still reads as one.
A floating rug that stops 45 cm short of the sofa looks too small however good it is. That gap is the most common sizing mistake in Indian living rooms.
How do diwans and floor seating change the rule?
A diwan or a low platform seat counts as a bed rather than a sofa, so lay the rug beside it rather than under it. Floor seating does the opposite: the rug is the seat, so everything sits on it.

- Diwan against a wall: run the rug along the diwan's length, its edge just touching the base, as a floating layout.
- Diwan with a sofa set: treat the diwan as the back wall of the group and use front legs on for the other seats.
- Floor seating with gaddas and bolsters: use all on, with the rug at least 30 cm larger than the cushions on every side.
For floor seating, choose a softer pile, since people sit directly on the rug for hours during festive hosting.
Which layout suits which room?
Match the layout to the room size and the furniture you already own. These are starting points for a three plus one plus one set.
| Living room | Layout | Rug to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Under 11x12 ft | Floating | 5x8 or 6x9 ft |
| 11x13 to 13x15 ft | Front legs on | 8x10 ft |
| 14x16 ft and larger | All legs on | 9x12 or 10x14 ft |
| Any size, floor seating | All on | Cushion area plus 30 cm each side |
The living room rug size guide sets out sizes for other sofa sets and room shapes.
Which Rugberry rugs suit each layout?
A plain or quietly patterned rug suits all legs on, where furniture covers much of it; a rug with a clear design suits floating, where all of it shows.

- Greige Wool Rug: hand tufted New Zealand wool in a grey that leans warm, from about ₹40,000 in 5x8 ft. Plain enough for all legs on.
- Congrand Wool Rug: hand tufted New Zealand wool, from about ₹37,000. Its loose loops read well whether furniture covers them or not.
- Arctic Wool Rug: hand tufted New Zealand wool, pale with ink marks, from about ₹37,000. Best floating or front legs on, where the pattern shows.
All three are in the Rugberry 8x10 ft rugs range, the size that suits front legs on in most homes.
Frequently asked questions
Will the sofa tilt if only the front legs are on the rug?
The front legs rise by the thickness of the rug, usually a little over 1 cm, which the cushions and frame absorb. Most people do not notice it once seated.
Is a floating rug wrong for a living room?
A floating rug is right for a small room or a sofa against a wall, as long as its edge comes within about 15 cm of the sofa. It only looks wrong when it stops well short of the seating.
Can I mix layouts in one room?
Yes, as long as each seat follows one clear rule. A common mix in Indian homes is a diwan beside a floating rug with a pair of chairs set front legs on.
Count the legs, measure the room, then pick the layout. Material first.
