Rug Sizing Mistakes People Make Online
The most common sizing mistake online is buying a rug that is too small, usually a 5x8 ft in a hall that needs 8x10 or 9x12 ft. On a screen every rug looks generous; on the floor, a small one floats in the middle of the room.
In short
- A 5x8 ft rug covers 40 sq ft, which is often less than a fifth of a large Indian living room.
- In most living rooms over about 200 sq ft, an 8x10 or 9x12 ft rug lets at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on it.
- Rugberry stock sizes run 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14 and 12x15 ft, and most rugs can be made to any size.
- Marking the rug outline on the floor with masking tape before ordering is the most reliable way to avoid a wrong size.
What is the most common rug sizing mistake?
Buying too small. It happens because the smaller sizes look affordable and the product photo is cropped tight, so the rug fills the frame and looks larger than it is.

In the room, a rug that is too small sits like an island, with the furniture lined up around it rather than on it. It makes the room look smaller, not larger, because the eye reads the gap of bare floor around it.
The fix is to size from the furniture, not the budget. Our rug placement guide shows the standard layouts.
Why does a 5x8 ft rug look lost in a large hall?
Because it covers too little of the floor. A 5x8 ft rug is 40 sq ft. A typical living room in a 3BHK flat might be 14x18 ft, or 252 sq ft, so the rug covers about a sixth of it.

In that room, the sofa usually sits 60 to 90 cm away from a 5x8 ft rug, and the chairs opposite do not reach it at all. The seating stops reading as one group.
Moving up the Rugberry size ladder changes that. An 8x10 ft rug covers 80 sq ft and lets the front legs of a three seater and two chairs rest on it; a 9x12 ft rug at 108 sq ft takes the whole group in a larger hall. For a living room of around 250 sq ft, choose 8x10 ft over 5x8 ft, because the furniture can then stand on the rug together.
Are you measuring the room or the seating?
Measure the seating. The rug's job in a living room is to hold the furniture group together, so its size should come from the sofa and chairs, not from the walls.

- Measure the length of the sofa and add 15 to 20 cm on each side. That is the minimum width of the rug.
- Measure from the front of the sofa to the front of the chairs opposite, and add about 45 cm so the front legs of both can rest on the rug.
- Round up to the nearest Rugberry stock size, or note the figure for a custom size.
The Congrand Wool Rug, hand tufted in New Zealand wool on a generous scale, is drawn for exactly this: a room with space to give, in sizes up to 12x15 ft.
Did you forget the walkways and the border?
The opposite mistake is a rug so large it runs into walls or blocks a walkway. Leave about 30 to 45 cm of floor between the rug and the walls in most rooms, so the floor frames the rug.

Keep 75 to 90 cm clear for walkways between furniture, and check that the rug edge does not stop right in a doorway, where a lifted corner can trip someone. On polished marble or vitrified tile, the border of bare floor also shows the stone you paid for.
Size the rug from the furniture, not from the budget. A small rug makes a room look smaller.
Is the rug the wrong shape for the room?
Size can be right and shape still wrong. A long, narrow living room in many Mumbai flats suits a longer rug, such as 6x9 or 9x12 ft, laid along the length, while a square room may need a custom size.

An L shaped sofa needs a rug that reaches under both arms of the L, which usually means 9x12 ft or larger. In a bedroom, a rug under the bed should show 45 to 60 cm on both sides and at the foot; for a king size bed, that points to 8x10 or 9x12 ft rather than 5x8 ft.
The Greige Wool Rug, hand tufted in New Zealand wool in a grey that leans warm, works well at these larger sizes because a quiet colour does not overwhelm a big floor.
Did you trust the photo instead of the tape?
Room photos are styled to flatter, and the scale of the furniture in them may be nothing like yours. A rug that looks wide under a low European sofa may look narrow under a deep Indian sectional.

Before you order, mark the rug's outline on the floor with masking tape, or lay out newspaper to the exact size, and leave it for a day. Walk around it, sit on the sofa, open the doors. If it feels small, it is.
The Arctic Wool Rug is a good example to tape out: hand tufted in New Zealand wool, pale and still, it is offered in all six stock sizes from 5x8 to 12x15 ft. Browse the 9x12 ft collection if your tape lands there.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to buy a rug too big or too small?
Slightly too big is almost always better than too small. A larger rug makes a room feel bigger and holds the furniture together, while a small rug leaves the seating floating around it.
What size rug do I need for a 3BHK living room?
Most 3BHK living rooms in Indian cities suit an 8x10 or 9x12 ft rug, depending on the sofa length and seating layout. Measure the seating group and add room for the front legs before choosing.
How much floor should show around a rug?
Leave about 30 to 45 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls in most rooms. In very large halls, the border can be wider, as long as the furniture group sits on the rug.
Can I get a size between the stock sizes?
Most Rugberry rugs can be made to any size, as their product pages state. If your measurements fall between two stock sizes, a custom size avoids compromising either way.
Tape it out, then order. Material first.
