A Second Rug for the Bedroom Sitting Area
A bedroom sitting area takes a second rug when it is a real zone, with at least two pieces of furniture, and the room is 180 sq ft or more. Make the second rug smaller and quieter than the bed rug, give it a different shape or texture, and leave 18 to 24 inches of floor between the two.
In short
- A bedroom sitting area for two armchairs and a side table suits a 5x8 ft rug or a 6 ft round rug, placed 18 to 24 inches from the bed rug.
- Rugberry's Facet Wool Rug, hand tufted New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, comes in a 6 ft diameter that suits a pair of reading chairs, with a regular price of ₹28,300 ex GST at the time of writing.
- Rugberry's Nuva Silk Rug in Camel, handloom Botanical Silk at 10 mm, gives a sitting area a soft sheen that sets it apart from a wool bed rug, with a regular price of ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft ex GST.
- Two rugs in one bedroom look calm when they share a colour family and only one of them carries a strong pattern.
When does a bedroom need a second rug?
A bedroom needs a second rug when it has a sitting area that works as its own zone, such as two armchairs by a window, a chaise with a lamp, or a low seat with a side table. A single chair in a corner does not need its own rug; a group of furniture does.
Master bedrooms in newer Indian apartments and villas are often 14 x 16 ft or larger, with a bay window, a balcony door or a quiet corner beyond the bed. That corner becomes a place for morning tea, reading or a phone call away from the rest of the house.
Without a rug, the sitting area floats on the tile and looks like furniture waiting to be moved. A rug gives it an edge and makes it a room within the room.
The sitting area is also where many couples keep a small tea table, a bookshelf or a jhoola, the indoor swing found in many Gujarati and South Indian homes. Each of those works better on a rug, which absorbs the sound of feet and gives the corner a sense of arrival.
The test is space. You need the bed rug, the sitting rug and a walkway of bare floor between them. In a room under about 180 sq ft, that rarely fits, and a single larger bed rug that reaches the chair is the better answer.
What size should the second rug be?
The second rug should be sized to the sitting group, usually a 5x8 ft rectangle or a 6 ft round rug, with the front legs of every chair on it. It should always be smaller than the bed rug.

| Sitting area | Rug | Rugberry suggestion | Regular price, ex GST |
|---|---|---|---|
| One armchair, side table, lamp | 4x6 ft made to measure, or a 6 ft round | Facet Wool Rug, 6 ft diameter | ₹28,300 |
| Two armchairs facing a small table | 6 ft round or 5x8 ft | Facet Wool Rug, 6 ft, or Lucid Wool Rug, 5x8 ft | ₹28,300 or ₹40,000 |
| A chaise or daybed by the window | 5x8 ft, long side along the chaise | Nuva Silk Rug in Camel, 5x8 ft | ₹40,000 |
| Two chairs, ottoman and bookshelf | 6x9 ft | Lucid Wool Rug, 6x9 ft | ₹54,000 |

Size the bed rug first. Rugberry's guide to rug layouts under the bed covers the options, and our bedroom rug size guide gives the numbers. Then fit the sitting rug in the space that remains.
Should the second rug be round or rectangular?
A round second rug is often the best choice in a bedroom, because its shape separates it clearly from the rectangular bed rug and softens a room full of straight lines. A rectangle works better under a chaise or a long window seat.

Two rectangles in one bedroom can look like a rug that was cut in two. A circle next to a rectangle reads instantly as two zones. It also suits the usual sitting group of two chairs angled toward each other around a small round table.
The Facet Wool Rug is hand tufted New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, in 6, 8 and 10 ft diameters, and the 6 ft size fits two reading chairs. Its soft planes in ivory and sand catch window light without adding a busy pattern.
Use a rectangle when the furniture is linear. A chaise, a window seat or a daybed sits best on a rectangle with its long side parallel to the seat. Rugberry's post on irregular shaped rugs covers freer shapes if you want something less formal.
A circle beside a rectangle reads as two rooms. Two rectangles can read as one rug cut in two.
How far should the second rug be from the bed rug?
The second rug should sit 18 to 24 inches from the bed rug, with bare floor between them. That gap is the walkway from the bed to the window or the balcony, and it keeps the two rugs reading as separate zones.

In a bedroom the walkway matters at night. You should be able to walk from the bed to the bathroom or the balcony door without crossing a rug edge in the dark. Plan that route first, then place the sitting rug beside it, not across it.
Check the balcony door as well. In many Indian bedrooms the sitting area sits beside a sliding balcony door, and the rug should stop 6 to 12 inches short of the track so the door runs freely and rain at the threshold never reaches the pile.
Line the two rugs up along one shared line. If the bed rug sits 2 ft from the side wall, set the sitting rug 2 ft from the same wall, or centre it on the window. A shared line makes the room look planned even when the rugs are different shapes.
Rugberry's guide to zoning a room with two rugs covers the same principles for a living and dining hall. They apply to a large bedroom just as well.
How do you keep two rugs in one bedroom from looking cluttered?
Keep two rugs in one bedroom calm by giving them one colour family, letting only one carry a strong pattern, and choosing different textures. The bed rug usually leads; the sitting rug supports it.
- A wool bed rug with a Botanical Silk sitting rug: for example a Grain in Sandstone under the bed and a Nuva Silk Rug in Camel by the window. The sheen marks the sitting area as special.
- A plain bed rug with a gently patterned sitting rug: for example a Plush in Sand under the bed and a Lucid Wool Rug by the chairs. Lucid's planes fold toward a single point, each a shade lighter than the last.
- A plain bed rug with a round sitting rug: for example a Plush in Wheat under the bed and a Facet by the window. Shape, not colour, separates the zones.
Mind the heights as well. A bed rug of 18 to 20 mm and a sitting rug of 10 mm side by side look intentional, because the difference is clear. Two rugs a few millimetres apart in height look like a near miss.
Avoid two patterned rugs, two strong colours or two rugs of exactly the same size. Keep the bedding, curtains and chairs in the same calm family, and let one cushion or throw pick up the sitting rug's tone.
Rugberry's bedroom rug ideas show more combinations, and our guide to modern bedroom rugs in India covers the bed rug in detail.
Which fibres suit a bedroom sitting area?
Soft, low traffic fibres suit a bedroom sitting area, because it is walked barefoot and used for sitting rather than passing through. Botanical Silk, fine hand tufted wool and a wool and cashmere blend all work well here.

The sitting area is one of the few places in an Indian home where a rug gets little wear: no shoes, no dining chairs, rarely children at play. That frees you to choose a finer fibre than you would in the living room.
Botanical Silk, such as the Nuva Silk Rug, is cool underfoot with a sheen that changes as the light moves, which suits a sitting area by a window. Hand tufted New Zealand wool, such as Lucid or Facet, is warmer and softer, better for the north in winter. Rugberry's guide to wool and Botanical Silk compares the two.
Mind the sun. A sitting area by a large window takes direct light, and every fibre fades with time. Turn the rug every few months, and draw a sheer curtain in the harshest afternoon hours.
Botanical Silk shows water marks, so keep tea cups on the side table, not on the rug. Lucid and Facet carry a care note of vacuuming regularly and professional cleaning only, like most of the Rugberry range.
Frequently asked questions
Can you have two rugs in a bedroom?
You can have two rugs in a bedroom when it has a separate sitting area and is about 180 sq ft or more. Keep 18 to 24 inches of floor between them and let only one carry a strong pattern.
What size rug goes under two armchairs?
Two armchairs facing a small table suit a 6 ft round rug or a 5x8 ft rectangle, with the front legs of both chairs on the rug. The Rugberry Facet Wool Rug comes in a 6 ft diameter for exactly this.
Should the bedroom sitting rug match the bed rug?
The sitting rug should share the bed rug's colour family without matching it. A different shape, such as round beside a rectangle, or a different fibre, such as Botanical Silk beside wool, separates the zones calmly.
Is a round rug good for a reading corner?
A round rug is good for a reading corner, because it frames a chair and a side table neatly and softens a corner of straight walls. A 6 ft round rug suits one or two reading chairs.
Is Botanical Silk good for a bedroom sitting area?
Botanical Silk suits a bedroom sitting area, because the traffic is light and feet are usually bare. The Rugberry Nuva Silk Rug is handloom Botanical Silk at 10 mm, cool underfoot with a soft, shifting sheen.
