Shaped and Irregular Rugs: Buying Beyond the Rectangle
A shaped rug works best where a rectangle fights the room: an open plan space without walls to align to, a bay window, or a seating group set at an angle. Its edges follow the furniture or the light rather than the walls.
In short
- A shaped or irregular rug suits open plan rooms, bay windows and curved seating, where a rectangle would leave awkward corners.
- Rugberry shaped rugs such as the Irregular Wool Rug, Fluid Wool Rug and Euphoric Wool Rug are hand tufted in New Zealand wool.
- Hand tufting is the construction best suited to free shapes, because the outline is cut from the backing after tufting; not every shape is possible in every construction.
- To size a shaped rug, measure its longest and widest points and make a paper template on the floor before you order.
When does a shaped rug work better than a rectangle?
A shaped rug works better when the furniture does not line up with the walls. If your sofa floats in the middle of an open plan room, or two chairs face each other at an angle, a rectangle can look like it was dropped in at random.

An irregular outline follows the group instead. It reads as part of the furniture plan rather than a frame around it, which suits relaxed, modern rooms.
Rectangles still win in formal rooms, under dining tables with straight sides, and in narrow rooms where the walls already set the lines. For a room where seating sits square to the walls, choose a rectangle over a shaped rug, because it repeats the order the room already has.
Where do shaped rugs suit Indian homes?
They suit the spaces Indian builders often leave awkward. A few common ones:

- Open plan living and dining: in newer flats in Gurugram, Hyderabad or Pune, the living area often has no walls of its own. A shaped rug marks the seating zone without a hard edge.
- Bay and corner windows: a rug with a curved or angled edge can follow the window seat or the light falling on the floor.
- L shaped or curved sofas: an organic outline tucks into the bend of the sofa where a rectangle would leave a dead corner.
- Reading corners: a small shaped rug under one armchair and a lamp makes the corner a place in itself.
How do you size a rug without straight edges?
Measure the longest and the widest points of the shape, and treat those as its outer dimensions. A shaped rug listed as 8x10 ft will fit inside an 8x10 ft rectangle, but it covers less floor than a rectangle of that size.

Then make a template. Tape sheets of newspaper together, cut the rough outline, and lay it under the furniture for a day. Check that the front legs of the sofa or chairs land on it, and that the curve does not stop just short of a doorway where someone could trip.
Because the edges move in and out, leave a little more clearance from walls and furniture than you would with a rectangle, around 30 to 45 cm, so the shape has room to read.
Which constructions can be cut to a shape?
Hand tufting is the most flexible. The design is drawn on a stretched cloth, tufted, and the outline is then cut and bound by hand, so curves and irregular edges are practical. All four rugs in this guide are hand tufted for that reason.

Woven and knotted rugs are built row by row on a loom, which favours straight edges. Rounds and simple shapes are sometimes possible, but a free, wandering outline is far harder, and some designs cannot be shaped at all in those constructions.
So before you fall for a shape, ask which construction it will be made in and whether that construction allows it. Rugberry will confirm what is possible for a given design and size.

How are the edges of a shaped rug finished?
The outline of a shaped hand tufted rug is cut along the drawing and then bound, so the edge does not fray. Inside the shape, many designs are also carved: a channel is cut along the lines of the pattern so they stand slightly proud, as described under carving.

The Terraform Wool and Silk Rug shows this well. Hand tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, it is contoured like ground seen from above, and its outline follows the pattern rather than a straight line. When the rug arrives, check that the binding is even all the way round, especially at tight inside curves.
Which Rugberry shaped rug suits which room?
- The Irregular Wool Rug, hand tufted in New Zealand wool, is shaped in uneven blocks that refuse a grid. It suits a large living room with a sectional sofa.
- The Fluid Wool Rug runs in slow continuous curves, and its high contrast works in a pale room that needs one strong piece.
- The Euphoric Wool Rug is open and unstructured, with the pattern given room to move, and suits a bedroom or a study.
- The Terraform Wool and Silk Rug adds a low sheen that shifts as you cross the room, for a living room with good daylight.
The Shaped Rugs collection shows every outline Rugberry makes.

Frequently asked questions
Can any Rugberry rug be made in a custom shape?
Not every rug in every construction. Hand tufted rugs are the most flexible for free shapes, while woven and knotted rugs favour straight edges. Rugberry can confirm whether a particular design and size can be shaped.
Does a shaped rug cover less floor than a rectangle of the same size?
Yes. A shaped rug is measured at its longest and widest points, but its curves and cut outs mean it covers less floor than a full rectangle of the same stated size.
Is a shaped rug harder to place?
It is easier in open plan rooms and harder in narrow ones. A paper template laid under the furniture for a day shows quickly whether the outline works with the doors and walkways.
Do shaped rugs need a special rug pad?
A pad cut slightly smaller than the rug, following its outline, keeps the edges flat and stops the rug sliding on tile or marble. A rectangular pad would show beyond the curves.
Let the room set the outline. Material first.
