Rugs for Tropical Modern Homes

A tropical modern home suits natural, textured rugs that feel at ease with open walls and garden light: low wool, wool with jute, and hand knotted jute in the drier rooms. Lay rugs only where the roof fully covers the floor, and choose greens, flax and natural tones that echo the planting outside.

In short

  • Tropical modern is a style of architecture for hot, humid climates, with wide openings, deep roof overhangs, courtyards and a close link between rooms and garden.
  • In a tropical modern home, a rug should sit at least 4 ft inside the line where the roof ends, because driving rain and garden damp reach further than they appear to.
  • Wool and jute rugs such as the Rugberry Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Olive suit open living areas, while pure jute such as the Savannah Jute Rug in Natural suits rooms that can be closed and kept dry.
  • Green, flax and natural jute tones suit tropical modern rooms because they continue the colours of the garden into the house.

What is a tropical modern home?

A tropical modern home is a modern house designed for heat, sun and heavy rain. It uses wide openings, deep eaves, shaded verandahs, courtyards and cross ventilation to stay cool, and it treats the garden as part of the living space.

The style grew across South and Southeast Asia in the middle of the twentieth century and is now common in new homes in Kerala, Goa, coastal Karnataka, Sri Lanka and beyond. Materials are honest and local: exposed concrete, timber, stone, terracotta roof tiles, polished cement and lime.

Inside, the furniture is low and light, often in teak, cane or rattan, and the colour comes from the planting outside. The rooms are bright but soft, with green light filtered by trees.

That openness is the whole point, and it is also the challenge for a rug. There is no glass between the living room and the weather for much of the day.

Where does a rug belong in an indoor outdoor room?

A rug belongs well inside the covered area, at least 4 ft back from where the roof ends or the openings begin. In a monsoon storm, rain can blow 3 ft or more under an overhang.

Look at the floor after a heavy rain to see how far the wet line reached, then keep the rug clear of it. That line is the true edge of indoors for a rug.

The rug also helps define the room. In a living space open on two sides, a rug under the seating group gives the furniture a place to belong, so the room reads as a room and not a corridor to the garden.

Keep the open edge itself, where people walk in from the garden with wet or sandy feet, as bare stone or cement. Our guide to rugs for covered sit outs covers the most exposed spaces.

Find the line the rain reaches. Lay the rug a step further in.

Which rug fibres suit a tropical modern home?

Wool and jute blends suit the open living areas of a tropical modern home best, low New Zealand wool suits bedrooms and family rooms, and pure jute suits rooms that can be closed in the rains. Botanical Silk is better avoided in rooms that stand open to humid air.

The Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Olive pairs New Zealand wool with jute on the handloom, flat and firm at 7 to 8 mm. It dries quickly, with the look of natural fibre and the tolerance of wool. Its regular price is ₹34,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹45,900 for 6x9 ft and ₹68,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

The Savannah Jute Rug in Natural is hand knotted in jute at 15 to 16 mm, deep, chunky and the colour of dry grass. It is at its best in a study or bedroom with glazed doors that can be shut through the wettest weeks. Its regular price is ₹41,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹55,000 for 6x9 ft and ₹82,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

In bedrooms with air conditioning, the climate inside is much drier than the garden outside. That is where the pure natural fibres can live comfortably through the year, while open rooms keep the more forgiving blends.

Jute is a plant fibre and darkens or spots if it stays damp. That is not a reason to avoid it, only a reason to place it carefully. Our guide what is a jute rug explains the fibre.

Space Exposure Best fibre Rugberry example
Open living room under a deep roof Breeze, damp air, some splash Wool and jute, 7 to 8 mm Cabra Wool & Jute Rug, Olive

Family room or media room Mostly enclosed Low New Zealand wool Grain Wool Rug, Flax
Formal room off a courtyard Sheltered, bright Carved wool Cavea Wool Rug
Verandah edge or pool deck Rain and wet feet No rug Leave stone or cement bare

For an open living area in a tropical modern home, choose a wool and jute rug over pure jute, because wool in the weave handles damp air and dries without marking.

Which rug colours suit garden light?

Olive, sage, moss, flax and natural jute tones suit garden light best. In rooms lit through leaves, these colours look rich and calm, while bright white rugs pick up a green cast and show every leaf and footprint.

The Grain Wool Rug in Flax is handloom woven in New Zealand wool at 12 to 14 mm, in a soft straw tone that suits polished cement and pale timber. It is light without being fragile, a good choice for a family room. Its regular price is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹51,000 for 6x9 ft and ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

For a single strong note, a deep green rug brings the garden inside. The Cavea Wool Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm and carved into stepped layers of olive, so it reads like terraced planting. Its regular price is ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹54,000 for 6x9 ft and ₹80,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

Avoid saturated blues and bright pattern. Tropical modern rooms work because the architecture is quiet and the garden is loud, and the rug belongs to the architecture. Our guide to earthy tones covers the wider palette.

What size rug suits an open plan tropical home?

In an open plan tropical home, size each rug to its furniture group: usually 8x10 ft for a living group, 9x12 ft for a large sofa and chairs, and 5x8 ft for a reading corner. Several moderate rugs work better than one vast one.

Large open floors invite a huge rug, but a 12x15 ft rug in an open room is hard to lift and air, and it covers the cool cement or stone that keeps the house comfortable. Smaller rugs are easier to dry after a damp week.

Keep the rugs in one family of fibre and tone, so the open plan feels joined. A Cabra in olive under the sofa and a Grain in flax under the dining table share their natural palette. Our guide to coastal modern rugs covers sea facing homes.

Where a dining table sits in the same open space, choose the low, flat weave for it. Chairs pull back easily on a 7 to 8 mm or 12 to 14 mm rug, and crumbs lift out of a close weave with a single pass of the vacuum.

Low furniture is common in these homes. Where the seating is a built in concrete bench or a low daybed, lay the rug in front of it rather than under it, with a 12 inch gap of floor.

How do you keep a rug fresh in a humid, open house?

Lift and air the rug every two to three weeks in the wet months, keep the ceiling fans moving, and never lay a rug back on a floor that is still damp. Moving air is the best friend a rug has in an open house.

A wool and jute rug can usually be stood on its long edge against a wall to air for an afternoon, which takes two minutes and one person. Do this after any spell of three or four wet days in a row.

Use a breathable felt pad, not a sealed rubber mat, on polished cement or stone. Shake small rugs outside once a week to clear leaves and sand.

When the house is left for weeks in the rains, roll the rugs in cotton and store them off the floor in an enclosed room. Our mould prevention guide covers the routine in detail, and our guide to courtyard homes covers sun and dust from an open centre.

Frequently asked questions

What rug suits a tropical modern home?

A low, natural textured rug suits a tropical modern home: a wool and jute blend for open living areas, low New Zealand wool for family rooms, and hand knotted jute for rooms that can be closed. Green, flax and natural tones echo the garden.

Can I use a rug in a room that is open to the garden?

You can use a rug in a room open to the garden if it sits well inside the covered area, at least 4 ft from where rain reaches. Choose wool or wool and jute, and lift it to air every few weeks in the monsoon.

Is jute good for a humid tropical home?

In a house built to let the breeze through, keep pure jute for the one or two rooms you can shut and air condition, a bedroom behind glazed doors for instance. Everywhere the air moves freely, choose a wool and jute weave: it has the same natural look and copes far better with damp.

What colour rug suits a room full of plants?

Olive, sage, moss, flax and natural jute rugs suit a room full of plants. They continue the garden's palette, while bright white rugs take on a green cast and show leaves and footprints quickly.

Which Rugberry rugs suit a tropical modern home?

The Rugberry Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Olive suits an open living area, the Grain Wool Rug in Flax suits a family room, the Savannah Jute Rug in Natural suits a closed bedroom, and the Cavea Wool Rug suits a sheltered formal room.
