The Grain Collection: Handloom Wool for Dining Rooms

The Rugberry Grain Collection is a handloom New Zealand wool rug with a low, closely worked surface, made in seven colourways. That low surface is the reason it belongs under a dining table, where chairs are pulled out and pushed back several times a day.

In short

  • The Rugberry Grain Wool Rug is handloom woven in New Zealand wool, with a low surface where the weave stays visible underfoot.
  • Grain comes in seven colourways: Sage, Umber, Sandstone, Flax, Tan, Mochaccino and Russet.
  • Every Grain colourway starts from about ₹37,000 in 5x8 ft and runs to 12x15 ft, with any size to order.
  • For a six seater dining table of about 6x3 ft, an 8x10 ft Grain rug keeps all chairs on the rug when they are pulled back.

What is the Grain Collection?

Grain is a family of plain, textured wool rugs woven on a hand loom. The yarn is New Zealand wool, and the finished surface is low and close, with the weave visible as you walk on it.

There is no printed or carved pattern. The interest comes from the yarn itself, which reads as faint lines of lighter and darker fibre running the length of the rug, the way grain runs through timber.

All seven colourways share the same construction, the same feel and the same price, so choosing between them is purely a question of colour. If handloom construction is new to you, the glossary explains how it differs from tufting and knotting.

Why does a low surface suit a dining room?

A low surface suits a dining room because chair legs glide across it instead of sinking in. On a deep pile, every chair pulled back leaves a drag mark and catches at the front legs.

Try this at home before you buy any dining rug. Press a thumb into the pile and count how far it goes down: if the thumb disappears, a loaded chair will plough through it every meal.

A close weave also gives crumbs less depth to hide in. After dinner, a few passes of a vacuum on suction only, without a rotating brush, lifts most of what falls from the table.

Under a dining table, the best rug is the one chairs forget is there.

Which of the seven colourways fits your room?

The right colourway depends on your floor and your table, more than on the wall colour. Here is how the seven sit, using the colour families Rugberry lists for each:

Grain Wool Rug in Flax, the palest of the seven colourways.

Colourway Colour family Works well with
Flax Beige White marble, pale oak, cane chairs
Sandstone Beige Beige vitrified tiles, light teak
Tan Tan Sheesham and walnut tables
Sage Green Grey stone floors, black metal chairs
Mochaccino Brown Dark wood, kota stone
Umber Brown Rooms with heavy daily use and dark floors
Russet Brown Neutral rooms that want one warm note

For a dining area that sees turmeric, ghee and chutney every day, choose a mid tone such as Tan, Mochaccino or Umber over Flax, because a darker, flecked surface shows a faint mark far less than a pale one. Order a swatch where one is offered and look at it under your dining light at night.

What size Grain rug goes under a dining table?

Measure the table and add about 2 ft on every side, so the back legs of a pulled out chair stay on the rug. Rounded to stock sizes, that works out as follows:

Bergamo Rug under a dining table in an AI staged room, wide enough for the chairs to pull back and stay on the rug.

  • Four seater, about 4x2.5 ft: 6x9 ft.
  • Six seater, about 6x3 ft: 8x10 ft.
  • Eight seater, about 8x3.5 ft: 9x12 ft.

Many Indian dining areas share a room with the living space, so check the walking line to the kitchen as well. If a stock size blocks that path, Grain is part of the Quick Custom Program, and our dining room rug size guide covers round and oval tables.

How do you live with Grain at mealtimes?

Treat Grain as a wool rug, not a wipe clean surface. Wool gives you time to act on a spill, but it is not spill proof, and no Rugberry rug is sold as such.

  1. Lift solids with a spoon, working from the edge inward.
  2. Blot liquids with a plain white cloth. Press, never rub, so the fibre is not roughed up.
  3. For oily food, a little mild, colour free detergent in cool water, blotted out, then blotted again with plain water.
  4. Dry the spot with a fan. Avoid hot water and bleach, both of which can mark wool.

Turn the rug end to end every few months so chairs wear it evenly. A thin underlay also stops it from creeping on polished marble or vitrified tiles.

Is Grain only for dining rooms?

No. Rugberry lists every Grain colourway for living rooms too, and the low profile helps anywhere a door must swing over the rug or a robot vacuum must climb onto it.

What Grain will not give you is the deep, sink in feel beside a bed. For that, the handloom Plush Collection uses the same New Zealand wool with a much deeper pile, at about ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Grain Wool Rug machine made?

No. The Rugberry Grain Wool Rug is woven on a hand loom in New Zealand wool. The slight irregularity in the yarn is part of that construction, not a fault.

Can a Grain rug be made in a size that is not listed?

Yes. Every Grain colourway is offered in any size to order, in addition to the six stock sizes from 5x8 to 12x15 ft. Measure the table plus 2 ft on every side before you ask.

Will dining chairs damage a Grain rug?

Chairs slide easily over a low, close surface, which is why Grain suits a dining room. Felt pads on chair legs and turning the rug every few months spread the wear evenly.

Which Grain colourway hides marks best?

The mid and darker colourways, such as Tan, Mochaccino and Umber, show small marks less than Flax or Sandstone. A flecked wool surface also breaks up the outline of a stain.
