A Rug for a Box Storage Bed

With a box or hydraulic storage bed, the rug usually works best around the bed rather than under it, either as one large rug starting about a third of the way down the bed or as a rug at the foot and runners at the sides. Box beds sit flush on the floor and weigh too much to lift easily, so decide the layout before the bed goes in.

In short

  • A box or hydraulic storage bed sits flush on the floor with no legs and can weigh well over 100 kg once filled, so a rug under it is hard to place, rotate or clean later.
  • For a king size storage bed, an 8x10 ft rug laid across the lower two thirds of the bed, with the top third on bare floor, gives soft landings on both sides.
  • A storage bed with pull out drawers needs a low rug, or none, in the drawer path, because a deep pile can catch the drawer base and stop it opening.
  • Box beds collect a line of dust along their base, so leave 2 to 3 inches of bare floor between the rug and the plinth if the bed is not standing on the rug.

Why is a storage bed different from a bed with legs?

A storage bed is different because its base runs solid to the floor, it is very heavy once filled, and it often has a lifting top or drawers that need clearance. A bed on legs can sit lightly on a rug, while a box bed presses down along its whole footprint.

In many Indian homes the storage bed is the main cupboard of the room. Winter quilts, suitcases, spare bedding and festival decorations go inside. A king size hydraulic bed full of these can be very hard for two people to shift, which changes how you plan the rug.

With a legged bed, a rug can slide under and be adjusted later. With a box bed, whatever is placed beneath on the day of installation tends to stay there for years. That makes the first decision the important one.

Should a rug go under a box storage bed?

A rug can go under a box storage bed, but it works best only when the rug is large, low and firm, and when you accept that it will not be moved often. For most homes, a rug placed around the bed is the more practical choice.

If the rug goes under, the bed's base will press a permanent impression into the pile along its edges. That is fine if the rug never moves. It is a problem if you later want to rotate it to even out wear or send it for cleaning, because the dented lines will show on the open floor.

A rug under a heavy box base also tends to stay slightly damp beneath in humid cities, because air cannot reach it. In Mumbai, Kochi or Kolkata, where monsoon humidity stays high for weeks, a rug that can breathe is the safer option. Our guide to rug pads for Indian floors covers what to lay beneath.

The alternative is to keep the bed on the floor and arrange the rug so that its top edge stops just short of the plinth or sits under only the lower part of the bed. Both layouts are described below.

What size rug suits a king or queen size storage bed?

A king size storage bed of 6x6.5 ft usually suits an 8x10 ft rug, and a queen size bed of 5x6.5 ft suits a 6x9 ft or 8x10 ft rug. Laid sideways across the lower part of the bed, these sizes leave 18 to 24 inches of rug on each side.

Indian bed sizes differ a little from international ones. A typical Indian king is about 72x78 inches and a queen about 60x78 inches. Measure the bed base itself, not the mattress, because box bases often run an inch or two wider.

Bed Base size Rug size Layout
Single storage bed 3x6.5 ft 5x8 ft or a 2.5x8 ft runner beside Rug along the open side
Queen storage bed 5x6.5 ft 6x9 ft Across the lower two thirds
Queen, larger room 5x6.5 ft 8x10 ft Across the lower two thirds
King storage bed 6x6.5 ft 8x10 ft Across the lower two thirds
King in a room over 14x14 ft 6x6.5 ft 9x12 ft Most of the bed, top third bare

For a king size box bed in a typical 12x14 ft bedroom, choose an 8x10 ft rug laid across the lower two thirds over a 9x12 ft rug, because the larger rug would run under the side tables and wardrobe doors.

Our full bedroom rug size guide covers legged beds as well.

Which layouts work best around a box bed?

Three layouts work best around a box bed: one large rug under the lower two thirds, one rug across the foot with a runner on each side, or a single rug on the side you get out of bed. Each suits a different room and budget.

  • Lower two thirds: the classic layout. The bed's lower part sits on the rug, the headboard end stays on the floor. It looks generous and gives a soft step on both sides.
  • Foot plus runners: no rug under the bed at all. A 5x8 ft rug at the foot and a 2.5x8 ft runner along each side frame the bed and can be lifted for cleaning at any time.
  • One side only: when the bed is pushed against a wall, a 5x8 ft or 6x9 ft rug on the open side is all that is needed.

The foot plus runners layout is the most practical for heavy storage beds, because nothing sits under the base. Our guide to rug layouts under a bed shows the same layouts with legged beds.

Decide the rug before the bed arrives. A full box bed rarely moves again.

What about drawers and hydraulic lifts?

Hydraulic lift beds open from the top, so they need clearance above the mattress, not at floor level, and a rug does not affect them. Drawer storage beds are different: their drawers slide out at floor level, and a deep pile in their path can stop them opening.

Measure the gap between the drawer base and the floor. If it is under 15 mm, keep the rug clear of the drawer path, or choose a very low weave there. A deep pile of 18 to 20 mm will almost certainly catch.

The lower two thirds layout often solves this by accident, because side drawers usually sit in the upper half of the bed. Check where your drawers are before you order.

A hydraulic bed is lifted with someone standing beside it. A rug on that side gives a steadier, softer footing than polished marble, which is a small but real safety benefit when reaching into a heavy storage box.

How do you handle the dust line along a box bed?

Dust settles in a fine line along the base of a box bed, where the plinth meets the floor. Leave 2 to 3 inches of bare floor between the rug and the plinth so that line can be mopped, rather than letting it gather on the rug's edge.

This is one advantage of box beds: no dust can collect under them, unlike the dust bunnies under a legged bed. But the edge where the base meets the floor needs regular wiping, and a rug pushed tight against it makes that harder.

If the rug does run under the bed, vacuum along the plinth edge with a crevice tool once a week. In dusty cities such as Delhi or Jaipur, this small habit keeps the rug's visible edge looking clean.

Which rugs suit a bedroom with a storage bed?

A bedroom with a storage bed suits a soft rug at the sides, where bare feet land, and a firm or low rug wherever furniture or drawers meet it. Wool, wool and cashmere and Botanical Silk all have a place.

The Luma Silk Rug in Greige is handloom woven in Botanical Silk at 10 mm, a quieter, lighter tone for a white or oak storage bed. For the softest feel underfoot, the Cashmere Blend Rug in Taupe is handloom woven in a wool and cashmere blend at 16 mm, fine and very soft. Its regular price is ₹54,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹1,08,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

How do you place a rug under a box bed if you choose to?

If you place a rug under a box bed, do it on installation day while the bed is empty, centre the rug first, and put felt pads under the base where it meets the rug. Lifting a full bed later is hard work and risks damaging both the rug and the floor.

  1. Empty the storage before moving the bed, even slightly.
  2. Lay a thin rug pad, then the rug, and mark the bed's outline with tape.
  3. Lower the base carefully onto the rug, never drag it across.
  4. Check that drawers open and the lifting top clears the side tables.

Rugberry makes its Plush, Nuva, Luma and Cashmere Blend rugs to measure, so a rug can be sized to stop exactly where the drawers begin. More bedroom ideas are in modern bedroom rugs for Indian homes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a rug under a hydraulic bed?

Yes, a rug can go under a hydraulic bed, since the bed lifts from the top and needs no floor clearance. Place the rug when the bed is installed and empty, because a full hydraulic bed is very heavy to move later.

What size rug goes with a king size storage bed?

An 8x10 ft rug suits a king size storage bed in most Indian bedrooms, laid across the lower two thirds of the bed. In a room larger than about 14x14 ft, a 9x12 ft rug can sit under most of the bed.

Will a rug stop my bed drawers from opening?

A deep pile rug can stop bed drawers from opening if the gap under the drawer is small. Measure that gap, and keep the rug clear of the drawer path or choose a very low weave there.

Is it better to put runners beside a box bed instead of one rug?

Runners beside a box bed are often more practical than one large rug, because nothing sits under the heavy base. They can be lifted for cleaning at any time and leave the drawers free.

Will a box bed dent a rug permanently?

A box bed's base can leave lasting lines in a rug's pile because its weight presses along the whole edge. If the rug may be moved later, keep it around the bed rather than under it.
