Why Order a Rug Swatch Before You Buy
Order a swatch because a rug's colour and feel change with the light and the furniture around it, and a screen cannot show either. A Rugberry swatch is a 30 x 30 cm square of the real rug, made to be tested in your own room.
In short
- A Rugberry swatch is a 30 x 30 cm square cut from the same fibre and construction as the full rug.
- Test a swatch three times a day: morning daylight, afternoon sun and evening under tube light or LED.
- Lay the swatch on your actual floor and against your sofa fabric, because marble, wood and tile each shift a rug's colour.
- Swatches are sold for most Rugberry rugs and are the surest way to judge a sage, ivory or silk blend before you commit.
What is a rug swatch and what does it show?
A swatch is a small square of the actual rug, the same yarn, dye and construction. Rugberry swatches measure 30 x 30 cm, large enough to stand on with one foot.

It shows three things a photograph cannot: true colour in your light, the feel of the fibre under a bare foot, and how the pile reacts when you brush it both ways. You can find them in the swatches collection.
How do you test a swatch under Indian light?
Look at it at three times of day, in the room where the rug will go. Indian homes swing between strong daylight and very cool or very warm artificial light, and colour moves with it.

- Morning, near a window but out of direct sun. This is the closest to true colour.
- Afternoon, in the strongest sun the room gets. Warm tones like latte and sand turn golden here.
- Evening, under the lights you actually use. A cool white tube light pushes greys and greens colder; a warm LED of 2700 to 3000K pushes beiges toward yellow.
If you like the swatch at all three times, you will like the rug. If it only works in one, look at the next shade.
If you like the swatch at all three times of day, you will like the rug.
How do you check a swatch against your sofa and floor?
Put the swatch on the floor where the rug will lie, with the sofa beside it. A white marble floor makes a rug read darker; a warm teak or vitrified wood look floor makes greys read cooler.

Hold a cushion or the sofa arm against the swatch. Two beiges that look the same apart can clash side by side, one pink and one green underneath. Check the curtain too, because in many Indian living rooms the curtains are the largest block of colour after the floor.
What should you feel for in a swatch?
Stand on it barefoot, then press it with your palm. Different fibres and constructions feel very different, and the product page wording becomes real:

- Grain Wool Rug in sage, handloom wool: low and closely textured, the weave visible underfoot.
- Cabella Wool & Silk Rug in latte, hand tufted wool and silk: soft, with a low sheen that shifts as you move.
- Cashmere Blend Rug in natural, handloom wool and cashmere: fine, dense and very soft.
Brush the pile one way, then the other. If one direction looks lighter, that is sheen and pile direction, and you will see the same shading across the full rug.
Which rugs are most worth swatching?
Swatch first when the colour sits between two families, when the rug carries silk, or when the rug will cover most of a room. Sage can read grey or green, latte can read pink or yellow, and ivory can read cream or white, depending on the room.

When two shades both look right on screen, order both swatches and lay them side by side on the floor. Interior designers often do this with three neighbouring colourways, because the right one is usually obvious within a minute in the real room. Keep the swatches you did not choose; they help when you buy cushions or a second rug later.
A plain jute or a black and white flatweave is less likely to surprise you. A wool and silk blend in a pale tone is the most likely, because silk catches light that wool absorbs.
What can a swatch not tell you?
A swatch cannot show the scale of a pattern, the full sweep of an ombré gradient, or how the rug sits in the room. For those, look at full photographs of the rug and lay out tape on the floor at the size you plan to order.

Frequently asked questions
How big is a Rugberry swatch?
A Rugberry swatch is a 30 x 30 cm square of the real rug. It is large enough to see colour, feel the fibre and stand on with one foot.
Is a swatch the exact colour of my rug?
A swatch is made in the same fibre and colour as the rug, so it is the best guide available. Small variation between dye batches is normal in handmade rugs, so treat the swatch as a close match rather than an identical one.
Can I get swatches for every Rugberry rug?
Swatches are sold for most Rugberry rugs. If a rug you like has no swatch listed, ask the Rugberry team before ordering.
Ten minutes with a swatch saves months of second guessing. Material first.
