Rugs on Terrazzo and Mosaic Floors
A terrazzo or mosaic floor suits a plain or quietly patterned rug in a colour taken from the floor's own chips, usually a warm grey, greige or ivory. Terrazzo is already speckled, so a busy rug on top of it makes the room restless, while a calm rug lets the floor show off around its edges.
In short
- Terrazzo is a floor made of marble or stone chips set in cement or resin and polished smooth, common in older Indian city flats and back in fashion in new homes.
- To choose a rug colour for terrazzo, look closely at the chips and pick the second or third most common colour, not the dominant ground.
- Plain rugs and fine grid patterns suit terrazzo better than bold or busy patterns, because the floor already carries a speckled pattern of its own.
- Polished terrazzo is slippery, so every rug on it needs a thin felt and rubber pad cut about 2 inches smaller than the rug.
What is terrazzo, and why does it change the rug?
Terrazzo is a floor made of small chips of marble, stone or glass set in a cement or resin base and ground and polished to a smooth finish. In India it was widely laid in city flats and offices for decades, often called mosaic flooring, and it is popular again in new homes.

Older terrazzo floors in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune and Chennai often have grey, white, black and sometimes red or green chips, sometimes with borders in a contrasting tone. New terrazzo can be any colour, with large or tiny chips.
Two things matter for a rug. The floor is already a pattern, made of hundreds of small colours. And it is polished, so it is smooth, cool and slippery.
Terrazzo is also cool underfoot, which is a blessing in summer and less so on a December morning in a north Indian city. A wool rug in the seating area gives warmth exactly where feet rest, while the rest of the floor stays cool.
Owners who restore an old terrazzo floor usually love it, and rightly. The rug should frame it, not cover it.
How do you choose a rug colour for a terrazzo floor?
Kneel down and look at the chips closely. Pick the second or third most common colour in the floor, or a warm neutral that sits between them, and choose the rug in that tone.
The dominant ground colour is usually the wrong choice, because a rug in exactly that tone disappears into the floor. A second tone, perhaps the soft grey of the chips on a white ground, ties the rug to the floor while keeping it distinct.
Look in daylight and lamplight. Terrazzo is reflective, and its colour shifts more than most floors as the light changes. A swatch laid on the floor for a day or two settles the question.
Size matters when reading the floor. Large chips read as pattern from across the room, so the rug must be calmer still, while very fine chips read almost as a single soft colour and leave more freedom.
Warm terrazzo, with beige, rust or yellow chips, suits greige, sand and tan rugs. Cool terrazzo, with grey, white and black chips, suits warm grey, charcoal and ivory rugs.
Read the floor chip by chip. The rug colour is already down there.
Should a rug on terrazzo be plain or patterned?
A rug on terrazzo should usually be plain or very quietly patterned. Terrazzo is a fine, random speckle, and a second busy pattern on top of it makes the room feel unsettled.

A fine, regular pattern is the exception. Straight lines and grids contrast with the random speckle of terrazzo rather than competing with it.
The Plaid Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, with fine ivory lines crossing a grey ground in a quiet grid. On a grey and white terrazzo it gives order to the floor. Its regular price is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹50,000 for 6x9 ft and ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.
Avoid speckled, spotted or confetti patterns, which echo terrazzo too closely and blur into it. Avoid big organic shapes in many colours too. Our guide to patterned or plain rugs sets out the general rule.
Which rugs suit an old city flat with mosaic floors?
Old city flats with mosaic floors suit low, calm rugs in warm grey, greige or ivory, sized to the seating so the floor shows on all sides. These flats often have generous rooms, tall windows and a mix of old and new furniture.

The Greige Wool Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, in a grey that leans warm. It bridges cool grey chips and warm wood furniture, which is exactly the mix in many older flats. Its regular price is ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹53,000 for 6x9 ft and ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.
In a quieter, adult sitting room, the Luma Silk Rug in Gray brings a soft sheen that pairs well with polished stone. It is handloom woven in Botanical Silk at 10 mm, and its regular price is ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹53,000 for 6x9 ft and ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.
Botanical Silk is delicate when wet and shows footprints, so keep it out of dining rooms and away from balcony doors in a monsoon city. For mid century furniture on terrazzo, our guide to mid century modern rugs goes further.
| Terrazzo type | Rug tone | Rug style | Rugberry example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grey, white and black chips | Grey with fine ivory lines | Quiet grid | Plaid Rug |
| Grey chips, warm wood furniture | Warm grey | Plain, dense wool | Greige Wool Rug |
| Polished, formal sitting room | Soft grey with sheen | Plain Botanical Silk | Luma Silk Rug, Gray |
| Beige, rust or yellow chips | Sand or tan | Plain or tonal | Grain Wool Rug, Tan |
| Bold coloured new terrazzo | Neutral taken from one chip | Plain | Made to measure in a matched colour |
For a terrazzo floor in a family living room, choose dense New Zealand wool over Botanical Silk, because wool grips better on a pad, hides marks and shrugs off spills.
How do you stop a rug slipping on terrazzo?
Lay a thin felt and natural rubber rug pad under every rug on terrazzo, cut about 2 inches smaller than the rug on all sides. Polished terrazzo is one of the most slippery floors in an Indian home, especially in socks.

Avoid cheap PVC grip mats. They can react with polished stone and cement over time and leave a faint pattern or stain on the floor. Felt and natural rubber is the safe combination.
Check under the rug every few weeks during the monsoon, since a pad can hold moisture against the floor in a humid city. Our guides to rug pads and rugs on marble and tile cover pads and polished floors in more depth.
What size rug lets a terrazzo floor show?
Choose the smallest rug that still holds the furniture group, with at least 18 inches of terrazzo visible around it. A floor worth restoring is a floor worth seeing.

For a three seater sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table, an 8x10 ft rug usually does this in a room of about 14 x 16 ft. In a narrower room, a 6x9 ft rug with only the front legs of the sofa on it shows more floor.
Bedrooms on terrazzo are simpler. A rug that reaches about 2 ft beyond each side of the bed gives a warm first step in the morning, and the floor around it stays visible and easy to mop.
Many older terrazzo floors have a border band near the walls. If yours does, keep the rug inside the border so the band frames it like a picture mount.
Rugberry makes most designs to measure, so the rug can follow the border exactly. See rugs made to measure.
Does a rug damage a terrazzo floor?
A rug does not damage a terrazzo floor if it sits on a breathable felt and rubber pad and the floor underneath is dry. Damage comes from grit trapped under a rug without a pad, or from moisture held against the floor for weeks.
Grit under a rug acts like sandpaper on polish as the rug shifts. A pad stops the movement, and a weekly vacuum stops grit working through.
Spills are another risk. Terrazzo with marble chips can be etched by acidic liquids such as lime juice, vinegar or tea left to sit, so blot any spill on the rug at once before it soaks through to the floor beneath.
Sun can change the look of terrazzo slightly where a rug covers part of the floor for years, though far less than it fades wood. Rotating the rug every few months keeps any difference even. For warm grey tones on cool floors, see our guide to Art Deco revival rugs.
Frequently asked questions
What colour rug goes with a terrazzo floor?
A rug in the second or third most common chip colour of the terrazzo, or a warm neutral between them, goes best with it. Warm grey, greige and ivory suit grey terrazzo, while sand and tan suit warm toned terrazzo.
Can you put a patterned rug on terrazzo?
You can put a patterned rug on terrazzo if the pattern is fine and regular, such as a quiet grid or plaid. Speckled, spotted and busy multicoloured patterns compete with the terrazzo and make the room restless.
How do I stop a rug moving on a mosaic floor?
Lay a thin felt and natural rubber pad under the rug, cut about 2 inches smaller than the rug on each side. Avoid PVC grip mats, which can mark polished stone and cement over time.
Will a rug damage my terrazzo floor?
A rug will not damage terrazzo if it sits on a breathable pad and the floor stays dry. Damage usually comes from grit trapped under a rug with no pad, or from damp held against the floor in the monsoon.
Which Rugberry rugs suit a terrazzo floor?
The Rugberry Plaid Rug suits grey and white terrazzo, the Greige Wool Rug suits terrazzo with warm wood furniture, and the Luma Silk Rug in Gray suits a formal sitting room on polished terrazzo.
