What Size Rug Do I Need for My Living Room?
For most Indian living rooms an 8x10 ft rug is the right size, because it lets the front legs of a three seater sofa and two armchairs rest on it. Choose 6x9 ft for a compact flat with a two seater, and 9x12 ft or larger for an L shaped sofa or a living room over about 250 sq ft.
Short answer
- An 8x10 ft (240x300 cm) rug suits most Indian living rooms with a three seater sofa and two chairs, with the front legs of each piece on the rug.
- A 6x9 ft (180x270 cm) rug suits a compact living room with a two seater sofa, and a 5x8 ft rug is usually too small to hold a full seating group.
- An L shaped sofa or a living room larger than about 250 sq ft usually needs a 9x12 ft (270x360 cm) rug or larger.
- A living room rug should leave about 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches) of bare floor between its edge and the walls.
What size rug fits my sofa and room?
The rug that fits is the one that holds your seating together, so start from the sofa and the room size, then read across. This table covers most Indian living rooms.

| Living room size | Seating | Rug size | In cm | How it sits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 150 sq ft (about 10x13 ft) | Two seater plus one chair | 6x9 ft | 180x270 | Front legs of sofa and chair on the rug |
| 150 to 200 sq ft (about 12x14 ft) | Three seater plus two chairs | 8x10 ft | 240x300 | Front legs on, coffee table centred |
| 200 to 250 sq ft (about 14x16 ft) | Three seater, two chairs, side tables | 8x10 or 9x12 ft | 240x300 or 270x360 | 9x12 ft if chairs face the sofa across the rug |
| 250 to 350 sq ft | L shaped sofa or 3+2+1 seating | 9x12 ft | 270x360 | All front legs on, room around the edges |
| Over 350 sq ft or double height | Large sectional or two seating groups | 10x14 or 12x15 ft | 300x420 or 360x450 | All legs on, or two rugs for two zones |
Rugberry's Studio Collection uses these six standard sizes, 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14 and 12x15 ft, and any design can be made to measure in between. The verdict: when in doubt between two sizes, choose the larger, because a rug that is too small makes the room look smaller.
How much floor should show around a living room rug?
Leave about 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches) of bare floor between the rug and the walls, and at least 20 cm on any side that runs along a wall with furniture. That border frames the rug and lets the floor read as one surface.
In a smaller Mumbai or Bengaluru flat, 30 cm is enough. In a larger Delhi or Hyderabad living room with marble or Kota stone, go closer to 45 to 60 cm, so the stone shows as a generous frame.
A simple test before ordering: mark the rug's outline on the floor with masking tape and live with it for two days. If you step over the tape edge on your usual walk to the balcony door, the rug is in the right place; if you trip on it, move it.
Size the rug to the furniture, then check it against the walls. Never the other way round.
Should all the sofa legs go on the rug?
The front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug is the layout that works in most Indian living rooms. All legs on suits large rooms, and a rug floating in front of the sofa suits only small rooms or a deliberate reading corner.

- Front legs on. The rug ties the sofa, chairs and coffee table together while leaving the back of the sofa on the floor. An 8x10 ft rug does this for a standard three seater, which is around 210 to 230 cm long.
- All legs on. Every piece stands fully on the rug, which feels generous and holds the group firmly. It needs 9x12 ft or larger.
- Floating. The rug sits in front of the sofa with no legs on it. It is the least expensive option but makes the seating look disconnected unless the room is very small.
Rugberry's guide to front legs on the rug shows each layout with measurements, and the guide to rug size for a sofa covers sofa lengths.
What size rug suits an L shaped sofa or a sectional?
An L shaped sofa usually needs a 9x12 ft rug, so that the front legs of both arms of the L rest on it. Measure the two arms of the sofa and add about 30 cm to each so the rug reaches under them.

For a common L of 270 by 180 cm, a 9x12 ft (270x360 cm) rug placed with its long side along the longer arm holds the front legs of both arms. For a deep sectional of 300 by 240 cm, step up to 10x14 ft.
If the L is pushed into a corner, the rug can stop about 20 cm from the two walls behind it; it does not have to be centred in the room, only on the seating. Rugberry's guide to the rug for an L shaped sofa has worked layouts.
How do you size a rug in an open plan living and dining room?
In an open plan room, size each rug to its own zone: the living rug to the seating group, the dining rug to the table plus about 60 cm on every side for the chairs. Leave at least 45 cm of floor between the two rugs.
A typical Indian apartment with a 25 to 30 ft long living and dining space fits an 8x10 ft rug under the seating and a 6x9 or 8x10 ft rug under a six seater table. Two rugs of different sizes but a shared colour or fibre read as a plan, not as clutter.
One very large rug across both zones rarely works, because dining chairs dragged over a deep pile wear it quickly. Rugberry's guide to open plan zoning covers layouts in detail.
What if my living room is an odd size?
If no standard size fits, order the rug made to measure. Indian living rooms are often shaped by columns, bay windows, built in seating and door swings, and a few inches either way can decide whether a rug looks planned.

Every Rugberry Studio Collection design can be made to measure in any size, shape or colour. Product pages list around 30 days for hand tufted rugs and around 35 days for handloom rugs, plus delivery, and a made to measure size is quoted by area from the same rate as the standard sizes.
Measure the space twice, mark it with tape, and send the measurements with a photograph. The companion guide on custom rug cost in India shows how to estimate the price, and the living room rug size guide has more room plans.
Which Rugberry rugs come in the sizes living rooms need?
Most Rugberry Studio Collection rugs come in all six standard sizes from 5x8 to 12x15 ft. Three that suit living rooms are the Plush, the Grain and the Arctic, shown here at regular prices, ex GST, at the time of writing; a seasonal sale may show lower figures.

The Plush Wool Rug in Sand is ₹53,000 for 6x9 ft, ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft and ₹1,06,000 for 9x12 ft. The Grain Wool Rug in Mochaccino, handloom at 12 to 14 mm, is ₹51,000 for 6x9 ft, ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft and ₹1,02,000 for 9x12 ft.
The Arctic Wool Rug, hand tufted New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, is ₹50,000 for 6x9 ft, ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft and ₹1,00,000 for 9x12 ft. Browse every size in Rugberry's 8x10 ft rugs collection, the size most living rooms need.
What size rug suits common Indian apartment layouts?
Common Indian apartment layouts fall into a few patterns, and each has a rug size that usually works. Measure your own room, but these are reliable starting points.
- 2 BHK, living room around 11x14 ft. A three seater against the long wall and one chair opposite: an 8x10 ft rug, long side parallel to the sofa. If a two seater is used instead, a 6x9 ft rug is enough.
- 3 BHK, living and dining around 12x24 ft. An 8x10 ft rug under the seating and a 6x9 ft rug under a four or six seater table, with at least 45 cm of floor between the two.
- Builder floor or villa, living room around 16x20 ft. A 9x12 ft rug under a 3+2 or L shaped group, or a 10x14 ft rug if every piece should stand fully on it.
- Double height living room. A 12x15 ft rug, or two rugs for a seating group and a reading corner, so the floor does not look empty from the upper level.
Doors and balconies decide the last few inches. A rug at 14 to 16 mm needs a door that clears it, so check the gap under any door that opens over the rug before choosing a deep pile. Rugberry's guide to common rug size mistakes covers the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 5x8 rug big enough for a living room?
A 5x8 ft rug is usually too small for a living room seating group; it suits a reading corner, a small study or the space in front of a two seater only. For a three seater sofa with chairs, choose 8x10 ft.
What size rug for a 12x14 ft living room?
An 8x10 ft rug suits a 12x14 ft living room, leaving about 60 to 90 cm of floor around it and holding the front legs of a three seater sofa and two chairs.
Should the rug be bigger than the sofa?
Yes. The rug should be at least as long as the sofa, and ideally 15 to 20 cm longer on each end, so the sofa does not look as if it is overhanging a mat.
What size rug for a living room with a diwan or floor seating?
For floor seating, size the rug to the whole seating area so every cushion sits on the rug, often 9x12 ft or larger. A deeper pile such as the handloom Plush at 18 to 20 mm is more comfortable to sit on.
Can Rugberry make a living room rug in a custom size?
Yes, to the inch. Give the length and width you marked out with tape and Rugberry makes the chosen design to that size, or in another shape or colour. Allow about a month for hand tufted and a little longer for handloom, plus delivery.
Measure the seating, not the room, and the right size usually becomes obvious. When it does not, Rugberry will make the size you need.
