Rug Size for a Three Seater Sofa
For a 7 ft three seater sofa, choose a rug at least 8 ft long and ideally 9 to 10 ft, so it extends 6 to 18 inches beyond each arm. That makes a 6x9 the minimum for the sofa alone and an 8x10 the right size once two chairs join it.
In short
- A rug for a 7 ft three seater sofa should be 9 to 10 ft long, so it extends 6 to 18 inches (15 to 45 cm) beyond each arm.
- The front legs of a three seater should sit about 15 cm on to the rug, with the back legs on the floor.
- A 6x9 ft rug suits a 7 ft three seater with a coffee table; an 8x10 ft rug suits a three seater with two armchairs facing it.
- Rugberry stocks the Greige Wool Rug and Eucalyptus Wool Rug in both 6x9 and 8x10 ft.
How long should a rug be for a three seater sofa?
A rug for a three seater should be longer than the sofa by 6 to 18 inches at each end. For a sofa about 7 ft wide, that means a rug 8 to 10 ft long, and 9 ft is the comfortable middle.

A rug the same width as the sofa makes the sofa look as if it is perched on a mat. A rug only 6 inches wider at each end works in a small hall, but the room looks more settled at 12 inches.
Measure the sofa at its widest point, usually across the arms, not the seat cushions. Many three seaters sold in India run between 6.5 and 7.5 ft.
How deep should the rug reach under the sofa?
The rug should reach about 15 cm under the front legs of the sofa. That anchors the sofa without the rug disappearing under it.

Push the rug further back and the sofa sits half on, half off, with a visible ridge where the rug ends. Pull it forward off the legs entirely and the rug drifts away from the sofa every time someone sits down heavily.
From the front legs, the rug then needs to run past the coffee table by at least 30 cm. With a 60 cm deep table and 45 cm of legroom, that is about 5 ft of depth for the sofa alone.
A sofa rug should be wider than the sofa, never the same width. A foot beyond each arm settles the room.
What changes when you add two chairs?
Two chairs add depth, and depth decides the size. In the usual Indian layout, the chairs face the sofa across the coffee table, and their front legs need to reach the rug too.

| Layout | Seating footprint | Rug |
|---|---|---|
| Three seater alone | About 7x3 ft | 6x9 ft |
| Three seater with coffee table | About 7x5 ft | 6x9 ft |
| Three seater, two chairs opposite | About 8x8 ft | 8x10 ft |
| Three seater, one chair at each end | About 11x5 ft | 8x10 ft, or 9x12 ft for wide chairs |
For a three seater with two chairs facing it, choose an 8x10 over a 6x9, because the 6 ft depth stops short of the chairs. The rug placement guide shows the same layouts drawn out.
Should the rug be centred on the sofa or the room?
Centre the rug on the sofa. The rug frames the seating, so a rug centred on the room but off centre to the sofa looks like a mistake.

This matters in Indian halls where the TV wall and the sofa wall do not line up, or where a pillar breaks one wall. If the sofa moves, the rug moves with it.
What if the sofa stands away from the wall?
If the sofa floats in the room or backs on to a window, put all four of its legs on the rug. A floating sofa with only its front legs on the rug looks unanchored from behind.
That usually means an 8x10 even for the sofa alone, so the rug runs at least 15 cm behind the back legs. Our guide to all legs, front legs or floating compares the three layouts.
Greige, Eucalyptus or Cabella under a three seater?
All three are hand tufted in New Zealand wool, the Cabella with silk, and Rugberry stocks each in 6x9 and 8x10 ft. The choice is colour and sheen more than size.

Greige Wool Rug
The Rugberry Greige Wool Rug is a grey that leans warm, from about ₹40,000 in 5x8 ft. It sits easily under a beige or grey fabric sofa.
Eucalyptus Wool Rug
The Eucalyptus Wool Rug is a muted green, soft and slightly grey, easy against wood and stone, from about ₹37,000 in 5x8 ft. Under a teak or walnut framed sofa it is the warmer pairing.
Cabella Wool & Silk Rug in latte
The Cabella in latte is wool and silk with a low sheen that shifts as you cross the room, from about ₹41,000. For a sofa where children eat and play, choose Greige or Eucalyptus over Cabella, because plain wool shrugs off daily wear more easily than silk.
Frequently asked questions
What size rug goes with a 7 ft sofa?
A 6x9 ft rug for the sofa and a coffee table, or an 8x10 ft rug if two armchairs face the sofa. Both extend beyond the sofa arms, which keeps the layout settled.
Should the rug be wider than the sofa?
Yes. Aim for 6 to 18 inches of rug beyond each arm, with about 12 inches as the most balanced look in an average living room.
Can a 5x8 rug work with a three seater?
Only in a very small hall, and it rarely looks right. An 8 ft rug barely clears a 7 ft sofa, so a 6x9 is the better minimum.
Measure the sofa at the arms, then add a foot each side. Material first.
