How Much Does a Custom Rug Cost in India?

A custom rug in India is priced mainly by fibre, construction and size, so compare it per square foot. At Rugberry's regular prices, ex GST, at the time of writing, handmade rugs run from about ₹600 per sq ft for a hand woven reversible to about ₹1,600 for hand knotted wool, with hand tufted New Zealand wool near ₹925.

Short answer

  • A custom rug is priced mainly by its area in square feet, multiplied by a rate set by the fibre and the construction, with GST added on top.
  • At Rugberry's regular prices, ex GST, at the time of writing, hand tufted New Zealand wool rugs cost about ₹775 to ₹1,200 per sq ft, handloom wool about ₹925 to ₹1,000, and hand knotted wool about ₹1,400 to ₹1,600.
  • A made to measure 9x11 ft hand tufted wool rug at about ₹925 per sq ft works out near ₹91,600 before GST at 5 percent, as an estimate the Rugberry team confirms by quotation.
  • Rugberry product pages list making times of around 30 days for hand tufted and hand woven rugs, 35 days for handloom and 60 days for hand knotted, plus delivery.

How is a custom rug priced?

A custom rug is priced by area: length times width in feet gives square feet, and each fibre and construction carries a rate per square foot. GST is then added, at 5 percent on Rugberry rugs.

A 5x8 ft rug is 40 sq ft, an 8x10 ft rug is 80 sq ft and a 9x12 ft rug is 108 sq ft. Rugberry's standard sizes keep a near constant rate per square foot across sizes: the Grain Wool Rug in Sandstone is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft, both about ₹925 per sq ft, at regular price ex GST.

That makes the nearest standard size a sound first estimate for a made to measure size in the same rug. Small pieces, runners, round and irregular shapes, and designs with extra carving or colours may be quoted differently, which is why the final number always comes from a quotation.

What drives the cost of a custom rug?

Six things drive the cost of a custom rug: fibre, construction, pile height and density, design complexity, size and shape, and tax. The first two matter most.

  • Fibre. Jute costs less than New Zealand wool, and wool costs less than a wool and cashmere blend. The rarest fibres, alpaca, mohair, cashmere and llama, sit in Rugberry Reserve with prices on request.
  • Construction. Hand knotting is slowest, so it costs most. Handloom and hand tufted sit in the middle, and flat hand weaving is usually least.
  • Pile height and density. A deeper, denser pile uses more yarn. The Plush, handloom at 18 to 20 mm, costs a little more per sq ft than the Grain at 12 to 14 mm.
  • Design. Carving, several pile heights, many colours and gradations add hours. Rugberry's Ombré rugs, hand tufted with a gradation, are about ₹1,100 per sq ft against ₹925 for many solid or simply patterned hand tufted rugs.
  • Size and shape. Area sets most of the price, and unusual shapes add cutting and finishing time.
  • GST. Rugberry prices exclude GST; 5 percent is added at checkout with a GST invoice.

Rugberry's guide on why handmade rugs cost more explains where the hours go in each construction.

What does a Rugberry rug cost per square foot?

Rugberry's rug price by size guide shows how the same rates scale from 5x8 ft to 12x15 ft. The verdict: for most living rooms, hand tufted or handloom New Zealand wool at about ₹925 per sq ft gives the best balance of life, comfort and cost.

What does a custom size cost in practice?

In practice, multiply the area by the rate of the rug you like, then add 5 percent GST. These worked examples use regular prices ex GST at the time of writing and are estimates, not quotations.

  • A 9x11 ft living room rug in hand tufted New Zealand wool at about ₹925 per sq ft: 99 sq ft comes to about ₹91,600, or about ₹96,200 with GST.
  • A 7x10 ft dining rug in the handloom Grain at about ₹925 per sq ft: 70 sq ft comes to about ₹64,800, or about ₹68,000 with GST.
  • A 10x13 ft hand knotted rug for a formal room at about ₹1,620 per sq ft, the Stratum rate: 130 sq ft comes to about ₹2,10,600, or about ₹2,21,100 with GST.
  • A round rug. Rugberry's round rugs are listed by diameter; the Facet Wool Rug is ₹50,300 for 8 ft diameter at regular price, so start from the listed round sizes rather than the square rate.

Price the floor, not the photograph. Area times fibre times construction is most of the answer.

For a design like the Lucid Wool Rug, hand tufted with carved planes at ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹80,000 for 8x10 ft, a custom size keeps the same carving, so the estimate follows its own rate of about ₹1,000 per sq ft.

How long does a custom rug take?

Rugberry product pages list around 30 days for made to measure hand tufted and hand woven rugs, around 35 days for handloom and around 60 days for hand knotted, plus delivery. Plan the order back from the date the room must be ready.

Quick Custom rugs are faster, at about 10 days, from a set range in the Quick Custom programme. Fully bespoke designs through the trade programme take 4 to 8 weeks depending on material and complexity.

Custom colour adds a step at the start: colours are approved from yarn poms before weaving. Allow a few days for poms to reach you and for a decision, especially if several people sign off.

How can you keep a custom rug within budget?

You keep a custom rug within budget by choosing the construction first, sizing the rug to the furniture rather than the walls, and saving complexity for the one room that needs it. Small decisions on area move the price most.

  1. Size to the furniture. A rug that holds the front legs of the sofa and chairs is often a foot or two smaller each way than one that fills the room, and every square foot saved is about ₹925 at the hand tufted wool rate.
  2. Choose a standard size when it fits. If an 8x10 ft works, you avoid waiting for a custom size.
  3. Match construction to use. A study or guest room rarely needs hand knotting; keep the slowest construction for the room that will see the most life.
  4. Sample before ordering. A ₹800 swatch, credited against the rug order, costs far less than a rug in the wrong colour.

Finally, ask for the quotation in writing with the size, fibre, construction, colour references and GST shown separately, so every party works from the same numbers.

Rugberry's guide to custom rugs in India covers the full made to measure process from brief to delivery.

Is a custom rug worth paying for over a standard size?

A custom rug is worth paying for when a standard size would leave too much bare floor, crowd a door swing or miss the furniture by a few inches. It is not worth it when a standard size already fits.

Indian rooms are often built around columns, bay windows and fixed seating, so a few inches can decide whether a rug looks planned. A made to measure rug in the same fibre usually costs about the same per square foot as the standard size, so you pay for the area you need rather than a premium for the word custom.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a custom rug per square foot in India?

Roughly ₹600 to ₹1,620 a square foot before GST at Rugberry's regular prices at the time of writing. The low end is a hand woven reversible, the high end hand knotted wool, and most wool rugs land somewhere around ₹775 to ₹1,200 depending on construction and design.

Does a custom size cost more than a standard size?

At Rugberry the rate per square foot is close to constant across standard sizes, so the nearest standard size is a good first estimate. Unusual shapes and very small or very large pieces may be quoted differently, so confirm with a quotation.

Is GST included in Rugberry prices?

No. Rugberry prices on rugberry.in exclude GST, and GST at 5 percent is added at checkout with a GST invoice on every order.

Can I get a custom colour without paying more?

Rugberry offers custom colours on request on its customisable rugs, approved from yarn poms before weaving. Ask the team when you request a quotation whether your chosen colours change the price for that design.

What is the cheapest way to get a made to measure rug?

Choose a hand woven or jute construction, size the rug to the furniture rather than the room, and keep the design simple. At Rugberry the Kora Jute Rug works out at about ₹700 per sq ft at regular price, ex GST.

A custom rug should cost what its fibre, construction and area say it should. Start with Rugberry's customisable rugs and ask for a quotation when the size is settled.
