Made to Measure Rugs: Any Size, Shape or Colour

A made to measure rug from Rugberry can be any size, shape or colour, built on a Rugberry design or your own, in a construction chosen for the room. It is six decisions taken in order: size, shape, design, fibre and construction, colour, then the quotation.

In short

  • Rugberry makes rugs to measure in any size, shape or colour, starting from a Rugberry design or the client's own drawing.
  • According to Rugberry, made to measure rugs take about 30 days for hand tufted and hand woven, about 35 days for handloom and about 60 days for hand knotted, plus delivery.
  • The Rugberry Quick Custom Program cuts and finishes held handloom designs from Plush, Grain, Meraki and the Cashmere Blend to a custom size in about 10 days.
  • Custom colour is approved from physical yarn poms before weaving, and each made to measure rug is priced on a quotation, ex GST, with free delivery in India.

When is made to measure the right choice?

Made to measure is the right choice when no standard size fits the furniture, when the room has a shape that a rectangle cannot follow, or when the colour must match something already in the house. If a standard size fits, a rug held in stock is quicker and usually costs less.

Rugberry's Studio Collection is held in stock in six sizes, from 5x8 to 12x15 ft. Most rooms fit one of them. The rooms that do not are often the most important ones: a long drawing room, a living room with a bay window, a dining room built around a round table.

Our comparison of custom and ready stock rugs sets out the trade off in more detail.

Made to measure is also the answer when a design is right and the colour is not. A Rugberry design you like in sage can be made in a deep rust to sit with a teak sofa, keeping the drawing and changing only the poms.

And it suits rooms that will not change for years. A drawing room in a family home, a rug under a dining table built for the house, a study lined with books: these are the rooms where a few weeks of waiting buys a rug that fits exactly.

What are the six decisions in a made to measure rug?

The six decisions are size, shape, design, fibre and construction, colour and the final quotation, and they should be taken in that order. Each one narrows the next, so going out of order usually means going back.

  1. Size. Measure the furniture zone, not the wall to wall room. Write the size in cm.
  2. Shape. Rectangle, round, oval or a drawn shape that follows the room. See the shaped rugs.
  3. Design. A Rugberry design, adjusted, or your own drawing. Every customisable design is in the customisable rugs.
  4. Fibre and construction. New Zealand wool, jute, Botanical Silk or a wool and cashmere blend; handloom, hand knotted, hand tufted or hand woven.
  5. Colour. Chosen from numbered poms, in person, from a swatch or in the Rugberry Design Lab.
  6. Quotation. The Rugberry team prices the rug, ex GST, and confirms the details before the loom is set.

How should you measure for a made to measure rug?

Measure the furniture zone the rug must hold, then decide how much floor should show around it, usually 30 to 60 cm to the wall in an Indian living room. Write the size in cm and round to the nearest 5 cm.

Living rooms

Every seat's front legs should sit on the rug. Measure from the outside of the left chair to the outside of the right chair, add 15 to 20 cm each side, and that is your width.

Bedrooms

The rug should show 45 to 60 cm on each side of the bed and run from just below the bedside tables to past the foot. Our bedroom rug size guide has layouts for king and queen beds.

Shaped rooms

For a curve or an angle, lay paper or cardboard on the floor and trace the line, then photograph it with a tape measure in view. A template is worth more than a sketch.

Mark the final size on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day before ordering. A rug that is 10 cm wrong is hard to love.

Measure twice, on different days, and ideally with someone else holding the tape. Indian rooms are rarely perfectly square, so measure both diagonals of a large room as well, and note any column, step or built in seat the rug must clear.

Which construction should a made to measure rug use, and how long does it take?

Choose the construction for the room's use and your timeline: handloom for texture and softness, hand tufted for drawn designs, hand knotted for the longest life and hand woven for a flat, reversible piece. Each has its own making time.

Construction Rugberry lines Character Making time, about Best for
Handloom Plush, Grain, Meraki, Insignia, Luma, Cashmere Blend, Cabra Woven on the loom, textured or deep pile 35 days Living rooms and bedrooms that want softness or texture
Hand tufted Most patterned designs, including Solaris and Lamina Drawn designs, carved and cut pile, 14 to 16 mm 30 days Custom drawings, strong graphics, shaped rugs
Hand knotted Savannah, Stratum, Ithaca Knot by knot, dense, the most durable 60 days Principal rooms, rugs meant to last decades
Hand woven Reversible and jute flat weaves Flat, light, often two sided 30 days Dining rooms, studies, passages
Quick Custom Plush, Grain, Meraki, Cashmere Blend Held handloom rugs cut and finished to size 10 days A custom size from a proven colour, quickly

Making times are from Rugberry's product pages and service notes, plus delivery. They can change with the order, so confirm yours on the quotation.

For a family room with children and pets, choose handloom wool over hand knotted, because a low handloom weave like Grain is easier to keep clean and arrives sooner. For a drawing room that will be passed down, choose hand knotted, because no construction lasts longer. Our guide to the four constructions goes deeper.

How is colour chosen and approved?

Colour is chosen from numbered yarn poms and approved from the physical poms before weaving, not from a photograph. That is the single habit that keeps a made to measure rug from surprising you.

Start from a Rugberry colourway you like, then change only what the room needs. The Plush Wool Rug in Camel, handloom New Zealand wool at 18 to 20 mm, can be made in any colour; so can the Grain Wool Rug in Russet at 12 to 14 mm and the Savannah Jute Rug in Olive, hand knotted at 15 to 16 mm.

Approve colour from the yarn in your hand, in your own daylight. A screen is a suggestion, not a promise.

Our guide to rug colour in natural light explains why a north facing room and a west facing room need different poms for the same effect.

What does a made to measure rug cost?

A made to measure rug is priced on a quotation, ex GST, based on its area, fibre, construction and design. To estimate before you ask, look at the two standard sizes of the same design either side of yours.

At regular price, ex GST, a standard 8x10 ft Grain Wool Rug is ₹74,000 and a 9x12 ft is ₹1,02,000. A custom 8x11 ft Grain sits between those two in area, which gives you a sense of scale before the quotation arrives. Seasonal sale prices on standard sizes may be lower.

Because each rug is made for one client, Rugberry treats made to measure sales as final; manufacturing defects reported within 24 hours of delivery are replaced. Read our questions to ask before a custom rug and our overview of custom rugs at Rugberry.

What should you check before approving a made to measure order?

Before approving, check five things on the quotation: the size in cm, the shape drawing, the fibre and construction, the pom numbers for every colour and the pile height. Once the loom is set, changing any of them means starting again.

  • Size in cm. Compare it with the tape marks on your floor, not with a number you remember.
  • Shape. For a round, oval or drawn rug, check the drawing against your template, including which way it faces.
  • Fibre and construction. Make sure the quotation names what you chose, for example handloom New Zealand wool rather than hand tufted.
  • Colour. Every colour should have a pom number, and you should have held each pom in your own daylight.
  • Pile height. Check door clearances and any recess in the floor against the pile in mm, plus underlay.

A short checklist now saves a rug that is almost right. Our rug buying checklist has a printable version.

Ask, too, how the edges will be finished and whether an underlay is included. A bound edge, a fringe or a serged edge changes how the rug meets the floor, and a rug underlay is worth ordering with the rug on marble or tile.

Frequently asked questions

Can Rugberry make a rug in any size?

Yes. Rugberry makes rugs to measure in any size, shape or colour, built on a Rugberry design or the client's own. Send the size in cm and the Rugberry team will price it.

How long does a made to measure rug take in India?

It depends on the construction: allow about 30 days for hand tufted or hand woven, 35 for handloom and 60 for hand knotted, with delivery on top. If time is short, the Quick Custom Programme finishes a held design to your size in about 10 days.

Is a custom size rug more expensive?

A made to measure Rugberry rug is priced on its area, fibre and construction, and the exact figure comes on a quotation, ex GST. Comparing the standard sizes either side of yours gives a useful first estimate.

Can I return a made to measure rug?

Each made to measure rug is made for one client, so sales are final. Manufacturing defects reported within 24 hours of delivery are replaced, according to Rugberry's return policy.

How do I choose colour for a custom rug?

Choose from numbered yarn poms, ideally in your own room's daylight, or start in the Rugberry Design Lab and confirm against the physical poms. Rugberry approves custom colour from poms before weaving.

Measure the room you live in, not the room you imagine. Then begin with the customisable rugs or the Quick Custom Program. Material first.
