Made to Measure Rugs in India: What a Good Service Shows You
A good made to measure rug service in India shows you five things before the rug is made: a drawing of the rug at your size, colour agreed on real yarn rather than a screen, a written specification of fibre and construction, an honest making time for that construction, and clear terms on what happens if something is wrong.
In short
- A made to measure rug should be drawn to your room's dimensions and approved by you before any yarn is dyed or woven.
- Custom colour is safest when it is agreed from physical yarn poms in your own light, since screens and printed photos shift colour.
- The written specification for a made to measure rug should name the fibre, construction, pile height, size, shape and colours, and nothing should be left as "as discussed".
- Rugberry makes any design to measure in any size, shape or colour, and approves custom colour from yarn poms before weaving.
What should a good made to measure rug service show you?
A good made to measure service shows you the rug in detail before it exists, then makes exactly that. The test is simple: could you describe the finished rug to a friend, fibre, size, colours and making time, before you pay in full?

Many sellers say they can make any size. The difference between a careful maker and a casual one shows in the questions they ask and the documents they send. A careful maker asks for the room's measurements, the floor, what furniture stands on the rug and how the light falls. A casual one asks only for the size.
This guide is about judging the service rather than designing the rug. For the design decisions themselves, our guide to made to measure rugs walks through size, shape and colour, and the guide to questions to ask before a custom order covers awkward rooms with columns and steps.
Does the maker draw the rug to your room before it is made?
A good maker draws the rug to your exact dimensions and sends the drawing for approval before making starts. The drawing is where scale is caught: a motif that looks right on a 5x8 ft listing can look sparse on 12x15 ft, or crowded on a narrow runner.
At Rugberry, you send the dimensions of the room, or a plan, a sketch or a photograph, and the design team draws the rug to fit. Any Rugberry design can be adapted this way, and the team can also work from your own design. Our guide to how a rug design file is drawn shows what that drawing contains.
Look for three things in the drawing. The overall size and shape, with any curves, cut outs or rounded corners shown. The pattern at true scale, so you can see how many repeats or motifs fit. And the position of the design relative to the room, if the pattern has a direction or a centre.
Designers and architects can go further. The Rugberry Trade Program offers CAD-ready files and tear sheets for every rug, and the Design Lab, part of the trade account in India, lets a designer recolour a Rugberry rug from the pom box or upload a design online.
How should colour be agreed for a made to measure rug?
Colour for a made to measure rug should be agreed on physical yarn, held in the room where the rug will lie, at the times of day you use it. A phone screen, a monitor and a printed photo each show the same colour differently, and none of them shows how wool takes light.
Rugberry approves custom colour from yarn poms before weaving, so the dyed yarn you see is the yarn that goes into the rug. Hold the poms against your floor, your sofa fabric and your walls, in daylight and under the evening lamps. Our guide to custom rug colour matching explains how to compare them fairly.
If you are adapting an existing design rather than recolouring it, a swatch of the standard rug is useful too. A 30 x 30 cm swatch of any Rugberry rug costs INR 800, is posted anywhere in India, and its full value is credited against the rug order, which lets you feel the pile and see the construction before you decide.
A good maker shows you the rug on paper and in yarn before it shows you an invoice.
What belongs in a written specification?
A written specification is the single document that defines the rug, and every line in it should be specific. If a point was agreed on a call, it belongs in writing before making starts.

| Line in the spec | Why it matters | What a clear answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Fibre | Sets how the rug feels, wears and is cleaned | New Zealand wool, or New Zealand wool and Botanical Silk, named in full |
| Construction | Sets durability, price and making time | Handloom, hand knotted, hand tufted or hand woven |
| Pile height | Affects feel, doors and furniture clearance | A figure in millimetres, such as 14 to 16 mm |
| Size and shape | The reason for going made to measure | Each edge in feet or centimetres, with any curve drawn |
| Colours | Prevents a disagreement later | Approved pom references for each colour in the design |
| Making time and terms | Lets you plan the room and the handover | An estimate from a stated start point, and the defect and cancellation terms |
Rugberry's product pages already set an example of this kind of disclosure. Each rug shows a provenance card of eight facts, fibre, grade, origin, character, construction, technique, made and care, so you can compare pieces line by line. Architects writing their own documents will find more in our guide to rug specifications for architects.
Texture belongs in the specification too, when it is part of the design. The Mould Cast Wool Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, with soft taupe blocks raised from an ivory ground like pressed stones. A spec for a rug like this should say which areas stand proud and which are cut lower. Its regular price is ₹35,000 for 5x8 ft, ex GST at the time of writing, with any size to order.
How long should made to measure take, and who sets the clock?
A made to measure rug takes as long as its construction needs, and a good maker tells you the estimate and when it starts counting. At Rugberry, the FAQ gives about 30 days for hand tufted or hand woven rugs, about 35 days on the handloom and about 60 days for hand knotted, plus delivery, counted from the day payment is confirmed.

Two things change the real date. Approvals take time, so a drawing that goes back and forth three times moves the start. And any making time is an estimate, since handwork depends on the size and detail of the piece. Ask the team to confirm the exact timeline for your rug once the drawing and colours are signed off.
When time is short, the Quick Custom Program is the faster route. It covers a set of designs held ready to cut and finish to your dimensions, so the making is already half done when you order, and it takes about 10 days. If a standard size works, our comparison of custom size and ready stock rugs shows when stock is the better choice.
What happens if the finished rug is not right?
A good service tells you its terms before you order, not after delivery. With made to measure work, those terms are stricter than for a stock rug from a shop, because the piece is made for one room and one client.

At Rugberry, sales are final and returns or exchanges are not offered, since each rug is made for one client. If a rug has a manufacturing defect, email info@rugberry.in within 24 hours of delivery, and it will be replaced with another piece of the same rug. An order can be cancelled with a full refund before production begins and before the rug ships.
These terms are why the steps above matter. A drawing you have checked against the room, poms you have held in your own light and a specification with every line filled in are your protection. Treat each approval as final, and raise any doubt before you sign it, not once the rug is on the loom.
Handmade work also carries small variations that are not faults. A drawn line that wavers or a slight shift between dye lots is the mark of hand making, and our guide to handmade rug irregularities explains where the line between character and defect sits.
Which rugs suit made to measure best?
Made to measure suits rugs whose design holds up at any scale, and rooms where a standard rectangle would leave awkward gaps. Organic and abstract designs stretch well, while tight geometric repeats need more care at the drawing stage.

The Bergamo Rug is a good example of a design that scales. It is hand tufted in New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, with ivory fragments scattered over a warm sand ground, and the fragments can be redrawn to fill a long room or a near square one. Its regular price is ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.
Drawn line designs such as the Tinker Wool Rug, black hand drawn lines looping over ivory New Zealand wool, adapt well to shaped and irregular outlines, since the lines can be re-routed rather than cropped. Tinker is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft at regular price, ex GST at the time of writing.
Colour is the other half of made to measure. The Euphoric Wool Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, with grey blue stripes and outlined leaf forms on ivory, and the same drawing can be dyed in another palette agreed from yarn poms. Euphoric is ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft at regular price, ex GST at the time of writing.
For a flatter, firmer rug in an odd sized dining room or passage, the Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Sand, handloom woven in New Zealand wool and jute at 7 to 8 mm, is a plain textured choice where the size matters more than the pattern. It is ₹34,000 for 5x8 ft at regular price, ex GST at the time of writing. Our guide to irregular shaped rugs covers curved and cut out outlines.
Frequently asked questions
Which modern rug brands in India make rugs to measure?
Rugberry makes any of its designs to measure in any size, shape or colour, and can make a rug from your own design, with free delivery across India. When comparing makers, ask each for a drawing, poms and a written specification before paying in full.
Does a made to measure rug cost more than a standard size?
It is priced by area, fibre and construction, so a custom size usually costs about what its area would in the same design. Unusual shapes and very detailed redrawing can add to it. Our guide to custom rug costs in India gives worked examples.
Can I see a made to measure rug before it is finished?
You approve the drawing and the yarn poms before making starts, which is where the design and colour are fixed. To feel the construction itself, order a swatch of the base rug or visit the Noida Experiential Centre or a partner store.
Can an interior designer order on a client's behalf?
Yes. The Rugberry Trade Program gives designers and architects one trade price, no minimum order, numbered quotations and the option to ship directly to the client's site.
What measurements should I send for a made to measure rug?
Send the room's length and width wall to wall, the position of doors, columns and fixed furniture, and a photo from the doorway. The design team uses these to draw the rug and suggest where its edges should fall.
Ask for the drawing, the poms and the spec, then let the loom begin. See customisable rugs and the Quick Custom Program at Rugberry. Material first.
