A Rug for the TV Lounge or Family Room
In a TV lounge, the rug belongs to the seating, not the screen: it should sit under at least the front legs of the sofa and reach towards the TV unit, stopping short of it or running fully beneath it. For most Indian family rooms that means a 6x9 ft or 8x10 ft rug in a low to medium pile that takes lying on the floor.
In short
- In a TV lounge, the rug should anchor the sofa and chairs, with at least their front legs on it, and extend towards the TV unit across the floor where people sit and lie.
- A 6x9 ft rug suits a three seater sofa with the TV 7 to 8 ft away, and an 8x10 ft or 9x12 ft rug suits an L shaped sofa or a room where the TV sits 9 to 10 ft away.
- A rug should either stop clear of a floor standing TV unit by about 6 to 12 inches or run fully under it, never half under, so the unit stands level.
- For a family room where children lie on the floor to watch, a dense pile of 12 to 20 mm in a mid tone is comfortable and forgives snacks and footprints.
Where should a rug go in a TV lounge?
A rug in a TV lounge should sit in front of the sofa, under its front legs, and run towards the screen across the floor where the family sits, lies and plays. The rug defines the gathering place; the TV is only what everyone faces.

Many Indian homes now have two living spaces: a formal drawing room for guests and a TV lounge or upstairs family room for everyday life. The second one works harder, with children doing homework on the floor, grandparents on the recliner and late night films with the lights off.
In duplexes and villas, the family lounge often sits upstairs on the bedroom floor, open to a stair or a double height void. A rug there also softens footsteps for the rooms below and gives the landing a clear purpose.
That room needs a different rug from the formal one. It should be larger than you think, softer than a drawing room rug and forgiving of crumbs, and Rugberry's advice below is built around those three jobs.
What size rug suits a TV lounge?
The right size depends on the sofa and the distance to the screen. Measure the sofa's width and the gap from its front edge to the TV unit, then choose a rug that covers most of that gap and runs a little wider than the sofa.
| Seating | Sofa front to TV unit | Rug size | How it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two seater or loveseat | 6 to 7 ft | 5x8 ft | Front legs on, rug stops short of the unit |
| Three seater sofa | 7 to 8 ft | 6x9 ft | Front legs on, 6 to 12 in gap to the unit |
| Three seater and two chairs | 8 to 9 ft | 8x10 ft | All front legs on, chairs at the rug ends |
| L shaped sofa | 8 to 10 ft | 8x10 or 9x12 ft | Both runs of the L on the rug |
| Recliners plus sofa | 9 to 10 ft | 9x12 ft | Recliners fully on or fully off |
For a family TV lounge, choose one rug a size larger over a smaller rug with extra floor cushions, because a large rug gives children and guests a clean, warm floor to sit on.
Leave at least 12 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls on the open sides. Our living room rug size guide covers drawing rooms, and our guide to a rug for an L shaped sofa handles corner seating.
Measure from where people actually sit. If the sofa has a chaise or a footrest that extends, include it, because a rug that stops under a reclining footrest catches the mechanism and wears at that edge first.
Should the rug go under the TV unit?
The rug should go either fully under a floor standing TV unit or stop clear of it, never halfway. A unit with its back legs on the floor and front legs on the rug stands at a slight tilt, and the screen on top tilts with it.

With a wall mounted TV and a floating console, the rug can stop 6 to 12 inches short of the wall, which leaves a clean line of floor and makes it easy to clean under the console. This is the simplest layout in most apartments.
A corner TV is common in square family rooms. In that layout, centre the rug on the sofa rather than the screen and let the TV sit at a slight angle to the rug, which looks far more settled than a rug turned diagonally to face it.
With a long, low floor unit, running the rug fully beneath it can make a narrow room feel wider. Check that the unit's doors and drawers still open over the rug's thickness, and leave the cables running behind it, never under the rug, where they wear the backing and become a trip hazard.
Furnish the rug for the people on the sofa. The screen only needs a clear line of sight.
What pile is best for lying on the floor to watch?
For lying on the floor to watch, a dense pile of 12 to 20 mm feels best. It cushions elbows and hips without the loose, deep shag that collects crumbs and flattens in patches.

The Plush Wool Rug in Copper is a handloom pile of 18 to 20 mm in New Zealand wool, deep enough to lie on through a long film. Its regular price is ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.
The Grain Wool Rug in Mochaccino is handloom woven at 12 to 14 mm, firmer and lower, the better choice where homework, board games and toy cars share the floor. It costs ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.
Floor cushions and a pouffe on a rug turn it into a second seating level, which is how many Indian families watch cricket together. Our guide to rugs for floor seating covers gaddas and bolsters.
Watch out for very long loose shag in a family room. It feels soft for the first weeks, but toys, crumbs and charging cables disappear into it, and it flattens where children lie in the same spot every evening.
How do you handle snacks, spills and children?
Handle snacks and spills in a family room by choosing a mid tone with some pattern or texture, and by blotting at once. A TV lounge sees chai, chips, chocolate and sticky fingers, and a pale solid rug shows every one.

- Blot, never rub. Press a dry microfibre cloth onto a spill, then dab with a little lukewarm water and blot again.
- Crumbs first. Pick up crumbs before vacuuming so they are not ground into the pile.
- A tray rule. Snacks on a tray on the coffee table, not in a bowl on the rug.
- Weekly vacuum. Use a brush head with no beater bar.
Pattern helps more than colour alone.
The Congrand Wool Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, a camel field with loose ivory lines that break up crumbs and footprints. Its regular price is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing. Our guide to forgiving rug colours explains which tones hide the most.
Does the rug affect how the TV looks?
A rug can change how a screen looks in a bright room. A large, very pale rug near a sunny window bounces daylight around the room, which adds glare on a glossy screen in the afternoon.
Mid and warm tones such as camel, brown and copper keep a TV lounge calmer for evening viewing, and they suit the warm lamp light most families use at night. Keep the brightest colours in cushions and art, not across the whole floor.
A wool pile also softens sound. Hard tile and bare walls make dialogue echo, and a large rug with a felt underlay takes some of that edge off, which is why a family room with a rug simply feels quieter.
Curtains and upholstery do the rest. A rug, full length curtains and a fabric sofa together take most of the echo out of a tiled lounge, which makes evening viewing easier at a lower volume.
Which Rugberry rugs suit a TV lounge?
Rugberry rugs for a TV lounge are dense, warm and practical: a handloom Grain for heavy daily use, a Plush for lying on the floor, and a hand tufted design when the room needs a pattern to hold it together.

The Cadence Wool Rug is hand tufted in ivory New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, with carved chevron grooves that give a plain room a quiet line. It suits a lounge used by adults more than toddlers, at ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹80,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.
For homes with dogs or cats, see our guide to pet friendly rugs, and for the formal room downstairs, modern living room rugs. Our guide to rug size for a sofa settles the measurement if the lounge has an unusual sofa.
Frequently asked questions
Should a rug be centred on the TV or the sofa?
Centre it on the sofa. The rug belongs to the seating group, and if the TV is off centre, the room still reads well when the rug and sofa line up.
What size rug goes in front of a TV?
For a three seater sofa with the screen about 7 to 8 ft away, a 6x9 ft rug works. Larger seating or a TV 9 to 10 ft away calls for 8x10 ft or 9x12 ft.
Can a rug go under a TV stand?
Yes, if the whole stand sits on the rug so it stays level. Otherwise keep the rug 6 to 12 inches clear of it.
What is the best rug for kids to lie on while watching TV?
A dense wool pile of 12 to 20 mm in a mid tone is comfortable to lie on and hides everyday marks better than a pale or very deep shag rug.
Does a rug reduce echo in a TV room?
Yes. A large wool rug on a felt underlay absorbs some of the sound that bounces off hard tile, so speech from the TV sounds clearer and the room feels quieter.
Lay the rug for the people, and the room follows. See living room rugs and brown rugs. Material first.
