Designing the Foyer: A Rug for the First Five Steps

The best foyer rug in an Indian home is a firm, low wool and jute weave that clears the door, covers the first five steps inside and sits a little apart from the shoe rack. Choose a statement design only when the foyer is a room in its own right, with space to stand back and see it.

In short

  • A foyer rug should be low enough to clear the main door; most Indian doors clear a flat weave of 7 to 8 mm, while a pile of 15 mm or more often needs the door trimmed.
  • Rugberry's Cabra Wool & Jute Rug, handloom New Zealand wool and jute at 7 to 8 mm, is the most practical Rugberry foyer rug, with a regular price of ₹34,000 for 5x8 ft ex GST at the time of writing.
  • Rugberry's Savannah Jute Rug, hand knotted jute at 15 to 16 mm, suits a large foyer where the door opens clear of the rug, with a regular price of ₹41,000 for 5x8 ft ex GST.
  • A foyer rug works with a coir mat outside the door, not instead of one: the mat takes the grit, the rug takes the fine dust.

How big should a foyer rug be?

A foyer rug should cover the area where people take their first five steps inside, usually 4 to 5 ft deep, and leave 6 to 12 inches of floor showing on each side. In most Indian apartments that means a 4x6 ft rug made to measure or a standard 5x8 ft rug laid across the entrance.

Foyers in Indian homes come in three shapes. There is the apartment entry, often just the space between the door and the living room.

There is the corridor entry, long and narrow. And there is the villa foyer, a real room with a console, a mirror and sometimes a staircase.

Foyer type Typical size Rug size Rugberry suggestion
Apartment entry 5 x 6 ft to 6 x 8 ft 4x6 ft made to measure, or 5x8 ft across the door Cabra Wool & Jute Rug, regular ₹34,000 for 5x8 ft
Corridor entry 3 to 4 ft wide, 8 to 14 ft long A runner about 2.5 ft wide, 1 to 2 ft shorter than the corridor Cabra or Grain made to measure as a runner
Square villa foyer 10 x 10 ft and above 6x9 ft or 8x10 ft, or a round rug under a centre table Savannah Jute Rug, regular ₹55,000 for 6x9 ft

The rug should never run under the shoe rack. Leave a gap of 6 to 12 inches so shoes come off on the hard floor, then feet step onto the rug. This one habit keeps a foyer rug clean twice as long.

Will the front door open over the rug?

The front door will open over a foyer rug only if the gap under the door is larger than the rug's height, so measure before you choose. Most Indian main doors have a gap of 8 to 15 mm above the floor, enough for a flat weave but not always for a deep pile.

Open the door fully and slide a ruler under its lowest edge at the point of widest swing. If the gap is under 10 mm, choose a flat weave such as the Cabra Wool & Jute Rug at 7 to 8 mm. If it is 15 mm or more, a hand knotted Savannah at 15 to 16 mm may clear, but check the door's whole arc.

The alternative is to place the rug beyond the swing of the door. In larger foyers this often looks better anyway: the door opens onto bare stone or marble, and the rug begins where the visitor stops to take off their shoes.

Avoid cutting the door to fit a rug unless you plan to keep that rug for many years. A door trimmed for a deep pile will leave a draught and a dust gap if you change to a flatter rug later.

Which fibre handles shoes, dust and monsoon at the door?

A wool and jute blend handles the foyer best, because jute gives a firm, grippy surface that scrapes fine dust from soles, and wool adds resilience and lifts spills. A pure jute rug is handsome at the door too, as long as it stays dry.

The foyer is where Indian city dust comes in. In Delhi NCR it is fine and dry, in Mumbai and Kolkata it arrives with damp shoes in the monsoon, and in Chennai and Goa it often carries sand. Each one tests a rug differently.

  • Cabra Wool & Jute Rug: handloom New Zealand wool and jute at 7 to 8 mm. The best all round foyer rug. Firm, quick to vacuum, and the flecked colour hides dust between cleans.
  • Savannah Jute Rug: hand knotted jute at 15 to 16 mm. Rich and textured, better looking as it ages. Keep it away from wet umbrellas and monsoon shoes, because jute marks with water.
  • Hand tufted wool: New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm. Softer and more decorative, best in a large foyer where shoes come off well before the rug.

Whatever you choose, put a coir or rubber backed mat outside the door. The outer mat catches grit and water, and the rug inside catches the fine dust. Rugberry's guide to wool and jute rugs explains why the blend is so practical.

In the monsoon, keep a tray for umbrellas and wet shoes off the rug, and air the foyer daily. If a rug gets damp, lift it and dry both rug and floor fully before laying it again.

Should a foyer rug be quiet or a statement?

A foyer rug should be quiet in a small apartment entry and can be a statement in a large villa foyer. The rule is distance: a statement rug needs space to be seen whole, at least 8 to 10 ft from where you stand.

In a small entry you see the rug from above and very close. A bold pattern at that distance looks busy and makes the space feel smaller. A textured plain weave, such as Cabra in Sand or Olive, reads as calm and lets the door, the art and the light do the talking.

The foyer rug is the first thing a guest walks on. Let it say material before it says pattern.

A large foyer is different. When a visitor walks in and sees the floor from across a room, a rug with drawn lines can set the tone for the house. The Clique Wool Rug in Bone White, hand tufted New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm with clustered forms gathering across the ground, does this without loud colour.

Rugberry's post on the statement rug covers how to let one rug lead a room. In a foyer, keep the rest simple: one console, one mirror, one light, and the rug.

A pale statement rug at the door needs care. Choose it only if the household takes shoes off before the rug and guests are guided to do the same. Otherwise, choose the pattern in a mid tone.

How do you look after a foyer rug?

You look after a foyer rug by vacuuming it more often than any other rug in the home, ideally every two or three days, and by turning it every three months. The entrance takes the most traffic and the most dust in the house.

Use suction only, without a beater bar, especially on jute. Vacuum in the direction of the weave. For Cabra and Savannah, shake small rugs outside once a month if you can lift them, which removes the fine grit that settles deepest.

  • Mud: let it dry completely, then brush it out and vacuum. Never rub wet mud into the rug.
  • Water marks on jute: blot at once, then dry with a fan. Do not wet clean jute at home.
  • Oily marks from shoes: blot and call a professional cleaner rather than using detergent.

Rugberry's guide to dust and rugs in India explains how to stop dust working into the base of the pile. A foyer rug that is vacuumed often lasts as long as a rug in any other room.

How do you make the foyer feel designed rather than functional?

You make a foyer feel designed by treating the rug, the console and the light as one composition, centred on the line from the door to the main room. The rug sets the width of that line, so choose its size first and the furniture after.

A simple recipe works in most homes. Centre the rug on the path from the door.

Place a console against the side wall with its legs off the rug. Hang a mirror or one piece of art above it. Keep the shoe cabinet closed and to the other side, if there is room.

Colour ties the foyer to the house. If the living room has a Grain in Umber, a Cabra in Olive or Rust at the door sets up the same earthy family.

If the home is pale and cool, Cabra in Sand or Savannah in Natural carries the same calm. Rugberry's guide to matching rugs across rooms has more on this.

Many families also think about direction and placement at the main door. Rugberry's post on Vastu and rug placement covers the common questions. Whatever the rule, the practical ones still apply: clear the door, leave room for shoes, and vacuum often.

For an unusual foyer, such as a curved hall or a long, narrow passage, Rugberry makes any handloom design to measure, including runners. You can browse every jute and jute blend in the natural jute rugs collection and every Terra grade piece in the Terra grade rugs collection.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug should go in a foyer?

Size it to the steps people take as they come in, then check the door. The front door must clear the rug when it swings, so measure the gap under it before you order. In most apartments a 4x6 ft rug made to measure fits.

Is jute good for an entrance rug?

Jute is good for an entrance rug because its firm, textured surface scrapes fine dust from soles. It marks with water, so keep wet shoes and umbrellas off it, especially in the monsoon.

How thick can a rug be under a front door?

A rug under a front door must be thinner than the gap below the door, which is usually 8 to 15 mm in Indian homes. A flat weave such as the Rugberry Cabra Wool & Jute Rug at 7 to 8 mm clears most doors.

Should the foyer rug match the living room rug?

The foyer rug should sit in the same colour family as the living room rug without matching it exactly. A firmer weave at the door and a softer one in the living room, in related tones, reads as a planned home.

Can I get a foyer runner made to size?

Rugberry makes handloom rugs to measure in any size, including long runners for corridor entrances. A runner about 2.5 ft wide and 1 to 2 ft shorter than the corridor usually looks right.

Clear the door, leave room for shoes, and let the first five steps feel like the house. Material first.
