Statement Rugs: When the Rug Leads the Room
A statement rug is the one bold element in a room, chosen first, with everything else kept quiet so it can lead. It works best in a formal drawing room where guests sit facing it and the floor is in full view.
In short
- A statement rug is a rug chosen as the main feature of a room, with the sofa, walls and curtains kept plain around it.
- The Rugberry Terraform Wool & Silk Rug is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, contoured like ground seen from above, and starts from about ₹40,000 in 5x8 ft.
- The Perle Rug, part of Marie Ducept x Rugberry, is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool in 9.5x12.5 ft, from about ₹1.9 lakh.
- A statement rug in a drawing room should be large enough that the sofa and chairs leave much of its design visible.
The drawing room in many Indian homes is kept for guests, festivals and family gatherings. It is the one room where a bold floor has an audience.
What makes a rug a statement rug?
Scale of design, depth of surface or strength of colour, and usually one of these rather than all three. A rug can be pale and still be a statement if its surface is sculpted or its drawing is unusual.

Collaboration pieces are a natural fit, because they begin as a designer's drawing rather than a stock pattern. Rugberry works with designers including Marie Ducept and Khaled Hashem, and their rugs carry a single clear idea across the whole field.
Contoured and carved rugs, where the pile is cut to different levels, are the other route. Light falls across the raised and lowered areas and the design changes as you walk past.
How do you quiet the rest of the room?
Choose the rug first, then pick every other surface to support it. A sofa in plain linen, walls in one soft tone and curtains without print give a bold rug the stage.

- Plain upholstery. Solid fabrics in a colour taken from the rug's ground, not its accent.
- Low tables with clear legs. Glass, slim metal or open wooden frames let the design show through and around them.
- Art on the wall in a quieter key. One large canvas is plenty. A gallery wall above a statement rug splits attention.
Choose the rug first, then let every other surface in the room agree with it.
Which Rugberry rugs work as the statement?
Three pieces show three ways to be bold. Perle and Amal are shown here in styled renders, since real room photographs of them are not yet available.

Terraform Wool & Silk Rug
The Terraform Wool & Silk Rug is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, contoured like ground seen from above. The silk catches light along the drawn lines, and the effect is strongest in low evening light. It comes in stock sizes from 5x8 to 12x15 ft, from about ₹40,000.
Perle Rug
The Perle Rug from Marie Ducept x Rugberry is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool, its surface beaded in small even rounds. Its colours are quiet, ivory and sand, so it leads through surface rather than colour.
Amal Rug
The Amal Rug from Khaled Hashem x Rugberry is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, an open field broken by a single drawn line. In 5x7 ft, from about ₹48,000, it suits a smaller sitting room or a reading corner where one gesture is enough.
For a large drawing room built for guests, choose Perle or Terraform over Amal, because a bold idea needs floor area to be read from the sofa.
How big should a statement rug be in a drawing room?
Large enough that furniture covers no more than about a third of it. If the sofa, chairs and coffee table hide the centre of the design, the rug stops being a statement and becomes a background.
In a drawing room of 250 to 350 sq ft, that often means 9x12 ft or the Perle's 9.5x12.5 ft, with only the front legs of the seating on the rug. Keep the coffee table small or raised so the field stays in view from every chair.
How does light change a statement rug?
Silk and sculpted surfaces change through the day. Wool and silk rugs such as Terraform look brighter facing the window and deeper looking towards it, because silk reflects light along the direction of the pile.

Visit the room at the hour guests usually come, often evening, before choosing a placement. Warm lamps at a low height bring out relief in a contoured or beaded surface far better than a single ceiling light.
What should you check before committing to a statement rug?
Check how the rug looks from the main door and from the main sofa, the two places it will be seen most. Ask for a swatch to see colour and surface in your own light, and confirm whether the design reads at the size you need, since some drawings are made for a particular format.

Also ask yourself whether you will enjoy it in five years. A statement rug is a long relationship, and a design you love for its idea tends to wear better than one chosen for a trend.
Frequently asked questions
Can a pale rug be a statement rug?
Yes. A pale rug with a beaded, contoured or carved surface can lead a room through texture and shadow rather than colour.
Should a statement rug go in the living room or the bedroom?
Usually the living or drawing room, where it is seen by more people and more of the floor is visible. In a bedroom much of the rug sits under the bed.
Can I put a patterned sofa on a statement rug?
It is possible, but the room will have two leaders. A plain sofa lets the rug's design be read clearly from every seat.
One bold floor, and a quiet room around it. Material first.
