Pazo, Ithaca and Fern: Hand Knotted Statement Rugs
Pazo, Ithaca and Fern are three Rugberry hand knotted wool rugs made to be the one strong piece in a room. Each is priced from about ₹1.12 lakh to ₹1.65 lakh and can be made in any size to order.
In short
- The Rugberry Pazo Knotted Rug is hand knotted in New Zealand wool, charcoal lines on a sand ground, at about ₹1.65 lakh in 9x12 ft.
- The Rugberry Ithaca Rug is hand knotted in wool, a black and grey grid, at about ₹1,15,500 in 8x10 ft.
- The Rugberry Fern Hand Knotted Wool Rug is hand knotted in wool, ivory with fine grey lines and fringed ends, from about ₹1,12,500 in 8x10 ft.
- A statement rug works best in a room with plain upholstery and walls, so that the rug carries the pattern alone.
What makes Pazo, Ithaca and Fern statement rugs?
They are statement rugs because each carries a strong graphic drawing in a dense hand knotted wool, made to be the focus of a room rather than a background. Rugberry describes all three as dense and fine, the most durable way a rug can be made.

Each is stocked in one size and listed in any size and colour to order, which is typical of rugs bought for a particular room. If the construction is new to you, our earlier post on the charm of a hand knotted rug is a good start.
| Rug | Fibre | Look | Stock size | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pazo | New Zealand wool | Charcoal lines on sand | 9x12 ft | about ₹1.65 lakh |
| Ithaca | Wool | Black and grey grid | 8x10 ft | about ₹1,15,500 |
| Fern | Wool | Ivory with fine grey lines | 8x10 ft | about ₹1,12,500 |
What is the Pazo rug?
Pazo is a hand knotted rug in New Zealand wool, its sand coloured ground crossed by raised charcoal lines that form an irregular geometric network. The lines stand slightly proud of the ground, so the drawing reads by touch as well as by sight.

At 9x12 ft and about ₹1.65 lakh, it is the largest of the three and the one for a full drawing room. It sits well on pale marble or Kota stone with linen upholstery and dark wood. Because the lines are dark and the ground is warm, it also keeps its composure in a room that is used every evening. See the Pazo Knotted Rug.
What is the Ithaca rug?
Ithaca is a hand knotted wool rug with a broken grid in black and grey, a little like charcoal rubbed over a woven cloth. Rugberry lists it in 8x10 ft at about ₹1,15,500.

It is the most contemporary of the three, and suits a study, a bedroom with dark joinery or a living room in white and steel. Against white marble it reads as a strong, graphic block, so give it plain walls around it. See the Ithaca Rug.
What is the Fern rug?
Fern is a hand knotted wool rug in ivory, drawn with fine grey lines in a loose grid and finished with fringed ends. It is the quietest of the three, at about ₹1,12,500 in 8x10 ft.
Its pale ground suits a bedroom or a calm living room with oak and linen. Of the three, it is the one that most rewards a home with gentle traffic, since ivory shows marks sooner than charcoal or black. In the morning light of an east facing bedroom, its grey lines read almost like pencil on paper.
A statement rug works when it is the only pattern in the room.
How do you choose between them?
Choose by the room and its light: Pazo for a large, warm drawing room, Ithaca for a pale or modern room that needs contrast, and Fern for a calm bedroom or living room.

- For a family drawing room in daily use, choose Pazo or Ithaca over Fern, because their darker drawing hides wear and marks.
- For a bedroom, Fern suits the softer mood, and the 8x10 ft size fits a king bed laid crosswise.
- For a collector building over years, start with the room you use most and let later pieces answer the first.
Whichever you choose, keep upholstery and curtains plain. Our guide to statement rugs covers how to balance a bold rug in a room.
How should a hand knotted wool rug be looked after?
Look after a hand knotted wool rug with weekly vacuuming, twice yearly rotation and a specialist wash every few years.
- Vacuum with suction only, and never vacuum the fringe on Fern; lift it aside or brush it straight by hand.
- Blot spills with cool water and a white cloth. Never use hot water on wool.
- In the monsoon, keep the rug off any floor that stays damp and let the room air on dry days.

Frequently asked questions
Why are hand knotted rugs priced above ₹1 lakh?
A hand knotted rug is tied one knot at a time on a vertical loom, which takes far more hand time than tufting or weaving. Pazo, Ithaca and Fern are priced from about ₹1.12 lakh to ₹1.65 lakh for that reason.
Can Pazo, Ithaca or Fern be made in another size?
Yes. All three are listed in any size and any colour to order. This helps when a drawing room is narrower or longer than a stock 8x10 or 9x12 ft rug allows.
Is a hand knotted wool rug suitable for a home with children?
Yes, especially in the darker designs such as Pazo and Ithaca. Dense hand knotted wool is durable, and a strong drawing disguises the small marks of family life.
One drawing, knotted by hand, made to hold a room. Material first.
