Questions to Ask a Rug Brand Before You Buy

Before you buy a rug, ask the brand eight things: the exact fibre and construction, the true size and colour, what the price includes, how long it takes, what happens if it arrives with a defect, where you can see or feel it, and how to care for it. Clear written answers matter more than photographs.

In short

  • A good rug brand answers questions about fibre, construction, size, price, timing and defects in writing, before you pay.
  • Ask whether the quoted price includes GST, delivery and an underlay, because rug prices in India are often shown in different ways.
  • Ask what the brand does if a rug arrives with a manufacturing defect, and how quickly you must report it.
  • Rugberry publishes these answers on its FAQ and product pages, including fibre, grade and construction for every rug, free delivery across India and prices shown ex GST.

What should you ask a rug brand before you buy?

You should ask a rug brand the questions whose answers change what you receive or what you can do if it goes wrong. Pattern and colour you can judge from pictures; fibre, size tolerance, price terms and after sales you cannot.

This list is for a rug you choose from a range, online or in a store. A rug designed for one room has its own set of decisions, covered in our guide to questions to ask before ordering a custom rug.

Ask by email or message rather than on a call, so the answers are written down. A brand that is happy to reply in writing is usually one that stands behind what it sells.

Question A good answer sounds like How Rugberry answers
What is it made of? Named fibres and a named construction Fibre, grade, construction and technique on every product page
What size and colour will arrive? Exact size, a note on handmade variation, a swatch on offer Six standard sizes, any size made to measure, INR 800 swatch
What does the price include? Clear on GST, delivery and extras Prices ex GST, 5 percent GST added at checkout, free delivery in India
How long will it take? A range, with when the clock starts Estimates counted from the day payment is confirmed
What if it is faulty? A written defect policy with a time limit Report to info@rugberry.in within 24 hours of delivery for a replacement
Can I see it first? A store, a sample or both Noida Experiential Centre, partner stores, swatches

Verdict: if a brand can fill in every row of this table in writing before you pay, you are dealing with a seller who will still be there after delivery.

What exactly is the rug made of, and how was it made?

Ask for every fibre in the pile and the construction by name. Soft, silky and natural are descriptions, not answers, and a brand that knows its rugs will say New Zealand wool and hand tufted, or jute and hand knotted, without hesitation.

Follow up with the pile height and the backing. A hand tufted rug carries a backing cloth, while a handloom rug has none, and the difference affects how it lies, cleans and lasts. Our guide on how to check what a rug is made of shows what to look for once it arrives.

The Terraform Wool & Silk Rug shows the kind of answer to expect. It is hand tufted in New Zealand wool with plant-based Botanical Silk, at 14 to 16 mm, a network of taupe lines on ivory that is finished by hand at the workshop. Its regular price is ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

What size and colour will actually arrive?

Ask whether the listed size is the finished size and how much a handmade piece may vary. Handmade rugs are rarely exact to the centimetre, and a brand should say so plainly rather than leave you to find out with a tape measure.

Colour deserves the same question. Screens change colour, daylight in India is strong, and natural fibres take dye with slight variation from one batch to the next. Ask whether the photograph is of the actual rug or a render, and whether a swatch is available.

The Grain Wool Rug in Flax is a case where a swatch earns its cost. Its heathered handloom New Zealand wool at 12 to 14 mm mixes pale and darker strands, so it reads warmer or cooler depending on the light in your room. It is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft at regular price, ex GST at the time of writing. Our guide to judging rug colour online has more.

Pattern raises its own version of the question. On the Oblique Wool Rug, black lines run across ivory hand tufted New Zealand wool, and no two lines are perfectly even, because each is worked by hand. Ask whether that is how the rug is meant to look, so slight wander in a line is understood as character before it arrives. It is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft at regular price, ex GST at the time of writing.

What does the price include?

Ask whether the price includes GST, delivery, any underlay and any charge for a custom size or colour. Two rugs that look similarly priced can end up far apart once those are added at checkout.

At Rugberry, prices on rugberry.in exclude GST, which is added at 5 percent at checkout with a GST invoice on every order. Delivery is free to every address in India, and no delivery or handling charge is added. An underlay is a separate purchase.

When you compare brands, line up the same size and the same construction, and compare the final amount you would pay. A comparison of a hand tufted rug against a handloom one, or a 5x8 ft against a 6x9 ft, tells you little. Our rug price guide for India shows what each budget buys.

A brand that answers in writing before you pay is a brand that will still answer after delivery.

How long will it take to reach you?

Ask for a realistic range and for the day the clock starts. A quoted time that runs from order confirmation is not the same as one that runs from the day payment clears or a colour is approved.

Rugberry's FAQ gives 7 to 10 days for rugs held in stock, subject to availability. The Plush Wool Rug in Sand, handloom New Zealand wool at 18 to 20 mm, is held in stock in six standard sizes, from ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft at regular price, ex GST at the time of writing.

Made to measure rugs take longer: about 30 days hand tufted or hand woven, about 35 days on the handloom and about 60 days hand knotted, plus delivery, all estimates from the day payment is confirmed. If you have a fixed date such as a housewarming, say so when you ask.

What happens if something is wrong?

Ask what the brand counts as a defect, how quickly you must report it, and what it will do: repair, replace or refund. Ask too whether returns are accepted for a change of mind, because many handmade rug sellers do not accept them.

Rugberry is clear on both points. Each rug is made for one client, so sales are final and returns or exchanges are not offered. If a rug has a manufacturing defect, email info@rugberry.in within 24 hours of delivery and it will be replaced with another piece of the same rug.

That short window is a reason to unroll and inspect the rug on the day it arrives. Our guide to irregularities that are normal in a handmade rug helps you tell character from a genuine fault. An order can be cancelled for a full refund before it ships and before production begins.

Where can you see or feel the rug first?

Ask where the rug, or one in the same fibre, can be seen in person, and whether a sample can be posted to you. Touch settles questions about softness and sheen that no description can.

Rugberry rugs can be seen at the Noida Experiential Centre and at partner stores in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kochi, listed on the store locator. A 30 x 30 cm swatch of any rug is INR 800, posted anywhere in India and credited in full against the rug.

The Cashmere Blend Rug in Natural is one to feel before buying, since its handloom blend of New Zealand wool and cashmere at 16 mm is noticeably softer than plain wool. It is held in stock in six standard sizes, from ₹54,000 for 5x8 ft at regular price, ex GST at the time of writing.

How do you look after it, and who helps later?

Ask for care instructions that match the fibre, and whom to contact if a stain or a worn patch appears a year later. A brand's answer here tells you whether it expects its rugs to be lived with.

Rugberry's guidance is to vacuum once or twice a week with a brush attachment and no beater bar, turn the rug every few months, blot spills at once and never wash a rug at home. Deep cleaning is for a professional rug cleaner, and some shedding in a new wool rug is normal.

For after sales questions, Rugberry can be reached on WhatsApp at +91 96507 38435 or at info@rugberry.in. For a wider way to weigh up sellers, see how to compare modern rug brands in India.

Frequently asked questions

Is it rude to ask a rug brand so many questions?

Not at all. A rug is a large purchase that stays in a home for years, and good brands expect to be asked. Sending your questions in one message makes it easy for them to answer fully and for you to keep a record.

Should I trust a brand that only says the rug is handmade?

Ask which of the four handmade constructions it is. Hand knotted, handloom, hand tufted and hand woven rugs differ in price, feel and lifespan, so the single word handmade is not enough to compare offers.

Can I return a Rugberry rug if I change my mind?

No. Rugberry rugs are made for one client and sales are final, which is why a swatch or a visit to the Noida Experiential Centre before ordering is worth the small effort. Manufacturing defects are replaced if reported quickly.

Do Rugberry prices include GST?

No. Prices on rugberry.in are shown before GST, and 5 percent GST is added at checkout with a GST invoice. Delivery anywhere in India costs nothing extra.

Which question matters most if I only ask one?

Ask what the rug is made of, fibre and construction, in writing. Almost every other fact, from care to lifespan to fair price, follows from that one answer.
