Are Hand Tufted Rugs Worth It?
Hand tufted rugs are worth it when you want a dense wool pile, a crisp modern design and a made to measure size at a fair price per square foot. They are less suited to anyone who wants a rug to pass through generations, because the pile is held by a glued backing rather than knots.
Short answer
- A hand tufted rug is made by pushing yarn through a stretched cloth with a hand held tufting tool, then fixing the loops with latex and a backing cloth.
- Hand tufted rugs are worth it for modern designs with carved lines, curves and several pile heights, because tufting can draw shapes that are slow and costly to knot.
- A hand tufted rug in New Zealand wool usually lasts many years with regular vacuuming and rotation, but it cannot be reknotted like a hand knotted rug.
- At Rugberry, hand tufted New Zealand wool rugs have regular prices from ₹31,000 for 5x8 ft, ex GST, at the time of writing, and can be made to measure in around 30 days.
What is a hand tufted rug, and how is it made?
A hand tufted rug is made by a craftsperson pushing yarn through a cloth stretched on a frame, using a hand held tufting tool, and then locking the yarn in place with latex and a second backing cloth. It is made by hand, but it is not knotted.

The design is drawn onto the cloth first, and the tufter follows it colour by colour. Once the face is filled, the back is coated, a backing cloth is laid on, and the rug is sheared, carved where the design asks for it and bound at the edges.
Because the tool can move freely in any direction, tufting draws curves, organic shapes and sharp colour changes easily. That freedom is the main reason most modern design-led rugs, at Rugberry and elsewhere, are hand tufted.
When is a hand tufted rug worth the money?
A hand tufted rug is worth the money when the design matters as much as the fibre, when you need an exact size, and when your budget sits between a machine made rug and a hand knotted one. In those cases it gives the most design per rupee.

- For sculpted surfaces. Carving, high-low pile and several heights in one rug are natural to tufting. The Cavea Wool Rug uses carved planes in New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm, which would be far slower to make by knotting.
- For bold modern drawing. The Fluid Wool Rug runs in slow continuous curves of black and ivory, a line that tufting follows cleanly.
- For made to measure sizes. Hand tufted rugs are the usual construction for made to measure designs at Rugberry, so an odd living room or a 7x11 ft dining space is straightforward.
- For a dense, even pile. A well tufted New Zealand wool rug feels soft and even underfoot, with a dense pile that holds its shape.
Rugberry's guide to hand knotted vs hand tufted covers the two constructions side by side, if you are deciding between them for one room.
When is a hand tufted rug not worth it?
A hand tufted rug is not worth it if you want an heirloom, if the rug will sit on a floor that stays damp, or if you need a rug you can turn over and use on both sides. In those cases another construction serves you better.
The latex that holds the pile is the weak point over decades. It can dry and stiffen with age, and once the backing fails the rug cannot be reknotted the way a hand knotted rug can. A hand knotted rug costs more, but its structure can be repaired again and again.
Damp is the other limit. A tufted rug on a floor that is mopped and left wet in a Mumbai monsoon can trap moisture between the layers, so it should go down only on a dry floor. Reversible use is not possible, because the back of a tufted rug is a covered cloth, not a second face.
Tufting buys you freedom of design. Knotting buys you time. Choose the one your room needs.
How does hand tufted compare with hand knotted, handloom and machine made rugs?
Hand tufted sits between handloom and hand knotted rugs on design freedom, and between machine made and hand knotted rugs on price and lifespan. The table shows the trade offs for a living room rug in wool.

| Construction | How the pile is held | Design freedom | Life and repair | Rugberry 5x8 ft from (regular, ex GST) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hand knotted | Each knot tied around the warp | Any design, slowly | Longest life, can be reknotted | ₹41,000 (Savannah, jute) |
| Handloom | Woven into warp and weft on a loom | Solids, textures, simple patterns | Long life, edges can be rebound | ₹34,000 (Cabra, wool and jute) |
| Hand tufted | Latex and a backing cloth | Very high, carving and curves | Many years, backing limits repair | ₹31,000 (Turmoil, wool) |
| Hand woven flat | Woven flat, no pile | Graphic, flat patterns | Hard wearing, often reversible | ₹22,000 (reversibles) |
| Machine made | Woven or tufted by machine | High, any repeat | Shortest, rarely repaired | Not made by Rugberry |
Prices are Rugberry regular prices from the product pages, ex GST, at the time of writing, and a seasonal sale may show lower figures. The verdict: for a modern carved design at a fair price choose hand tufted; for a rug to outlast the furniture choose hand knotted.
What should you check before buying a hand tufted rug?
Before buying a hand tufted rug, check the fibre, the pile height, the density, the backing and the edges. Five minutes with the rug, or a swatch, tells you most of what you need.
- Fibre named in full. "Wool" is good, "New Zealand wool" is better, and "wool blend" needs a question about the other fibre. Rugberry's guide on how to check rug quality goes deeper.
- Pile height in mm. Most Rugberry hand tufted rugs are 14 to 16 mm, deep enough to feel soft and short enough to stay upright.
- Density. Bend a corner back. If you see a lot of backing between the tufts, the rug will crush and wear faster.
- Backing and glue. The backing should lie flat and be evenly fixed, with no stiff patches or lifting at the corners.
- Edges. The binding should be tight and even, because the edge takes knocks from vacuums and feet.
A new tufted rug may carry a faint smell from the latex for the first days; airing the room usually clears it. Some loose fibre in the first weeks is also normal for cut pile wool and settles with regular vacuuming.
How long does a hand tufted rug last, and how do you care for it?
A hand tufted rug in New Zealand wool usually lasts many years in a living room with sensible care, and the care is simple: vacuum regularly, rotate it, keep it dry and send it to a professional cleaner rather than washing it at home.
Vacuum once or twice a week without a beater bar on a high setting, and turn the rug 180 degrees every six months so sun and footfall spread evenly. Rugberry's care note for these rugs is short: vacuum regularly, professional cleaning only.
Blot spills at once with a dry white cloth, from the edge inward, and never soak the rug. Water that reaches the backing is the main thing to avoid, so a tufted rug should not be hosed, washed on a terrace or laid on a freshly mopped floor.
Which Rugberry hand tufted rugs show the construction at its best?
The Fluid, Cavea and Arctic rugs show three things tufting does well: a continuous drawn line, carved planes and a quiet pattern on a pale ground. All three are New Zealand wool at 14 to 16 mm.

The Fluid Wool Rug has a regular price of ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft. The Cavea Wool Rug is ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹80,000 for 8x10 ft. The Arctic Wool Rug, pale with dark marks scattered across it, is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft, all ex GST at the time of writing.
The whole range is in Rugberry's hand tufted rugs collection. If you are still deciding on cost, the companion post on how much a custom rug costs in India sets hand tufted prices beside the other constructions.
Is a hand tufted rug a good choice for an Indian home?
A hand tufted wool rug is a good choice for most Indian living rooms and bedrooms, provided it sits on a dry floor and is vacuumed often. It suits marble, vitrified tile and wooden floors alike, and a rug pad underneath stops it creeping on polished stone.

Dust is the everyday test. A dense 14 to 16 mm wool pile holds fine Delhi or Jaipur dust down in the tufts until it is vacuumed, so the rug looks cleaner between cleans than a flat synthetic, and a pattern with some movement, like the Fluid or the Arctic, hides it better than a pale solid.
Festivals ask for a little planning. Keep diyas and incense on a tray well away from the pile, roll the rug back for Holi, and lift it before a puja where water and flowers are used on the floor. These are habits, not limits, and they apply to any handmade rug.
Pets and children are fine on a cut pile tufted rug, which is kinder to claws than a loop pile. Blot accidents at once and avoid soaking, because water that reaches the backing is the one thing a tufted rug does not forgive.
Frequently asked questions
Are hand tufted rugs good quality?
A hand tufted rug can be very good quality when it uses a named fibre such as New Zealand wool, a dense pile and an evenly fixed backing. Quality varies widely between makers, so judge the fibre, density and finish rather than the construction name.
Do hand tufted rugs shed?
Cut pile wool rugs, tufted or not, release loose fibre for the first weeks. Regular vacuuming without a beater bar clears it, and shedding slows as the rug settles.
Is a hand tufted rug handmade?
Yes. A person guides the tufting tool through the cloth by hand, following the drawn design, and the finishing is done by hand too. It is handmade but not hand knotted, which is the difference that matters for repair and lifespan.
Can a hand tufted rug be washed at home?
A hand tufted rug should not be soaked or washed at home, because water can weaken the latex and backing. Blot spills at once and use a professional rug cleaner for a full clean.
Are hand tufted rugs worth it over machine made rugs?
For a living room, a hand tufted wool rug is usually worth it over a machine made synthetic, because wool resists crushing and wears more gracefully. A machine made rug is the better choice only when the lowest price or frequent replacement is the priority.
Tufting is a craft of drawing in wool. Chosen for the right room, a hand tufted rug gives years of use and a design no other construction makes as easily.
