Rugs for Interior Designers in India: A Trade Guide

Interior designers and architects can specify Rugberry rugs in three ways: from stock in six standard sizes, as a custom size or colour built on an existing design, or from one of the collaboration collections. Each route suits a different stage and budget of a project.

In short

  • Interior designers can specify Rugberry rugs from stock in six sizes, as custom sizes and colours, or from collaborations such as Marie Ducept x Rugberry.
  • Rugberry offers swatches for most rugs and colour poms for custom colours, so clients can sign off a physical sample.
  • Rugberry prices exclude GST, so show clients a project figure that includes it.
  • For several matching rugs in one project, order them together, because wool takes dye slightly differently from batch to batch.

The work that makes any of them go smoothly is the same: a clear specification and an approved sample before anything is ordered.

Route 1: Specify from stock

Most of the range is offered in 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14 and 12x15 ft. Stock is the right route when the plan allows a standard size, the client wants the rug on the floor at handover, or the budget is fixed and a custom rug would push it.

Specify by product name and colourway exactly as listed, for example Grain Wool Rug / Sandstone, rather than by a description. The Grain Wool Rug in sandstone is handloom woven New Zealand wool with a low, closely worked surface, from about ₹37,000, and is a dependable neutral for dining and living rooms in residential projects.

Route 2: Custom size and colour

Most Rugberry designs are open to any size and any colour. This is the route for rooms drawn around a pillar grid, double height living rooms in villas, long apartment halls, and projects where the rug must answer a stone, a fabric or a joinery finish.

At the top of the range, the Stratum Knotted Rug in dune is hand-knotted New Zealand wool, about ₹1.75 lakh in 9x12 ft, and can be made to any measure. For a client who wants a knotted rug sized to the room, it is the natural starting point. Browse the full list of customisable rugs.

Measuring on site

  • Measure after flooring, skirting and fixed joinery are complete. Drawings drift from what is built.
  • Note door swings and the clearance under each door, especially over deep pile.
  • Give the size in feet and centimetres, and say which dimension runs parallel to which wall.
  • Mark any cut-outs, curves or notches on a drawing with measurements from two fixed points.

Route 3: Collaborations

Rugberry works with designers on collections that carry their names. Two are especially useful for project work:

  • Marie Ducept x Rugberry. The Ondulation Rug is hand-tufted New Zealand wool, its surface running in long, even undulations, from about ₹1.75 lakh in 10x13 ft. It suits a large, quiet living room where the rug is the main gesture. See the Marie Ducept x Rugberry collection.
  • Khaled Hashem x Rugberry. The Amal Rug is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, an open field broken by a single drawn line, from about ₹48,000 in 5x7 ft.

Collaboration designs can also be made to other sizes and colours, which lets a designer use a recognised piece and still fit it to the plan.

How should clients approve a rug?

Clients should approve a physical swatch or colour pom, never a colour on a screen. Swatches are offered for most rugs in the swatches collection, and they belong on the material board next to the fabric and stone samples. For a custom colour, ask for a colour pom of the dyed yarn.

  • Show samples in the room where possible, in daylight and in the evening under the project's own lighting.
  • Have the client sign off the swatch or pom reference, not a photograph.
  • For several rugs in one project that must match, order them together. Wool takes dye slightly differently from batch to batch.

What goes on a rug specification sheet?

A rug specification lists the product and colourway, construction, fibre, size, colour reference, room, floor and quantity.

Line Example
Product and colourway Grain Wool Rug / Sandstone
Construction Handloom, as stated on the product page
Fibre As stated on the product page
Size 8x10 ft / 240x300 cm, long side parallel to window wall
Colour reference Approved swatch or pom reference
Room and floor Living room, Italian marble
Quantity One

Recording the floor matters. A rug going onto polished marble, timber or vitrified tile may need a pad sourced separately and a different approach to placement.

How do you budget rugs across a project?

Price every rug per square foot, then put the largest share into the principal living room.

A villa or a large apartment can need five or six rugs, and the total adds up quickly. A simple way to plan is to price every rug per square foot, then decide where the money goes.

  • Put the largest share into the principal living room, the room every guest sees.
  • Use handloom or hand-tufted wool for secondary bedrooms and the family room, where stock sizes often fit.
  • Keep the most delicate fibres for rooms with the least traffic.
  • Remember that listed prices exclude GST. Show clients a figure that includes it, so the final invoice holds no surprises.

Which construction suits which brief?

For family homes with children or pets, specify hand-tufted or handloom wool over hand knotted, because it costs less and cleans easily.

  • Family homes, children, pets: hand-tufted or handloom wool. Durable, easy to clean, broad colour range.
  • Dining rooms and study areas: low handloom weaves such as Grain, where chairs move freely.
  • Principal living rooms and statement pieces: hand-knotted wool, or a collaboration design.
  • Bedrooms: deep pile or the cashmere blend, chosen for feel.

Be candid with clients about construction. A hand-tufted rug and a hand-knotted rug can look alike in a render. They are built differently and priced differently, and the specification should say which is which.

Frequently asked questions

Can Rugberry make a rug to a drawing?

Most designs can be made to any size and colour. Share the measured drawing and the base design, and the details can be confirmed before anything is made.

Can I get samples for a client presentation?

Yes. Rugberry offers swatches for most rugs, and colour poms can be requested for custom colours. Put them on the material board beside the fabric and stone samples.

Can collaboration rugs be customised?

Yes. Collaboration designs carry the same any size, any colour option noted on their product pages.

A good rug specification is short and exact. Name the fibre, the construction and the size, and the rug will arrive as drawn.
