Hosting a Wedding Function at Home: Rugs

For a wedding function at home, roll away pale, deep pile and Botanical Silk rugs before the decorators arrive, and keep down only low, mid toned wool or wool and jute rugs in the rooms where guests sit. Lay cotton dhurries or sheets over any rug used for floor seating at a haldi or mehendi.

In short

  • Before a wedding function at home, roll away ivory, deep pile and Botanical Silk rugs, because turmeric, mehendi, ghee and decorators' tools stain and crush them.
  • Low, mid toned rugs such as the Rugberry Grain Wool Rug in Russet and the Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Rust can stay down in sitting rooms, with a cotton sheet on top for floor seating.
  • Haldi and mehendi should always happen on a washable cotton dhurrie or sheet, never directly on a handmade rug.
  • After a wedding, vacuum every rug that stayed down, treat any marks within a day and book a professional clean for anything set.

Why does a wedding at home need a rug plan?

A wedding at home needs a rug plan because the house becomes a venue for three to five days. Decorators bring ladders and flower frames, caterers carry hot vessels through the living room, and a hundred guests walk in from the garden or the street, many without taking off their shoes.

Each function brings its own risk. Haldi brings turmeric paste, mehendi brings henna and the lemon and sugar that sets it, the sangeet brings dancing and drinks, and the pheras or puja bring ghee, diyas and havan smoke.

A rug plan made a week before costs an afternoon. Without one, the most valuable rug in the house often ends up under a chaat counter. For gifts rather than hosting, see our guide to a rug as a wedding gift.

Which rugs should you roll away before the functions?

Roll away every ivory or pale rug, every deep pile rug, every Botanical Silk or wool and Botanical Silk blend, and any rug in a room that will host haldi, mehendi, food service or dancing. Keep only low, mid toned rugs in rooms used for sitting.

Ivory or pale wool Stains show at once Footprints show Ghee shows Roll away
Botanical Silk or blends Water and turmeric mark it Wears where feet turn Ghee marks Roll away
Deep pile, 18 mm and more Paste sinks in Crushes and mats Holds crumbs and wax Roll away
Low mid toned wool Only under a sheet Acceptable in a side room Under a sheet, away from fire Keep in sitting rooms
Wool and jute, 7 to 8 mm Only under a sheet Acceptable Under a sheet Keep in sitting rooms
Pure jute Water marks it Acceptable when dry Keep clear of water and fire Keep only in dry rooms

For a wedding at home, keep a low rust or russet wool rug down over a pale or Botanical Silk rug, because warm mid tones forgive turmeric, footprints and ghee far better than ivory.

The Rugberry Botanical Wool Rug is a good example of a rug to protect. It is hand tufted in New Zealand wool, with tan leaves on an ivory field, and is made to measure from ₹32,000 for 5x8 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

On an ordinary day it suits a bedroom or a quiet sitting room. During a wedding it belongs rolled up in a dry cupboard, or in the one room guests never enter.

How do you store rugs during the wedding week?

Store rugs during the wedding week rolled pile inwards, wrapped in a clean cotton sheet and kept off the floor in a dry, locked room. Never fold a rug for storage, and never wrap it in plastic, which traps humidity.

Vacuum each rug before rolling it, so dust does not press into the pile for a week. Roll along the length, around a cardboard tube if you have one, and tie loosely with cotton tape rather than string.

Label each roll with the room it came from. After a wedding, everyone is tired, and a clear label saves an evening of unrolling the wrong rug in the wrong room. Store rolls lying flat on a bed or a shelf rather than standing on end, which bends the fibres at the base.

The most valuable rug in the house should spend the wedding rolled up in a quiet room.

Which rugs can stay down for floor seating?

Low, firm, mid toned rugs can stay down for floor seating, as long as a cotton dhurrie, a sheet or a gadda cover goes on top. The rug underneath adds warmth and softness on a marble floor, and the cover takes the spills.

The Grain Wool Rug in Russet is handloom woven in New Zealand wool at 12 to 14 mm, a reddish brown that sits naturally with marigold, rose and the reds of wedding clothes. Its regular price is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft and ₹1,02,000 for 9x12 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

The Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Rust is even more forgiving, a firm handloom weave at 7 to 8 mm that gaddas and bolsters sit on without sinking. Its regular price is ₹34,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹68,000 for 8x10 ft and ₹91,800 for 9x12 ft, ex GST at the time of writing. Our guide to floor seating and rugs covers gadda layouts.

The Savannah Jute Rug in Natural is hand knotted in jute at 15 to 16 mm, deep and chunky. It can stay down in a dry, air conditioned room used for elders to rest, but keep it away from any function involving water, paste or food. Its regular price is ₹41,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹82,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

How do you protect rugs during haldi and mehendi?

Protect rugs during haldi and mehendi by holding both functions on a washable cotton dhurrie, a tarpaulin covered with sheets, or bare floor, never on a handmade rug. Turmeric and henna are dyes, and on wool they behave like dyes.

Haldi is the riskier of the two. The paste is wet, it travels on hands and feet, and the yellow sets fast in warm, humid air. Hold haldi on a terrace, in a courtyard or on a floor covered edge to edge with old sheets, and wash hands and feet before guests walk back into rooms with rugs.

Mehendi is slower to set but darker once it does. Guests with drying henna sit for an hour or more, and a hand resting on a rug leaves a mark.

Seat them on chairs or on covered gaddas. If henna does touch a rug, our guide to mehendi, ink and hair dye on rugs sets out the first steps.

For the pheras or a puja at home, keep the havan kund and every diya on a metal tray on bare floor, at least 3 ft from any rug. Our guide to diyas near a rug covers safe distances.

How do you manage decorators, caterers and shoes?

Manage decorators and caterers by agreeing a route through the house before they arrive and covering any rug on that route with a heavy cotton sheet or hardboard. Ladders, flower frames and hot handis do more damage in an hour than guests do in a week.

Ask the decorator where they will build. Mandaps, backdrops and lighting rigs need bare floor; a ladder foot on a rug crushes pile and slips. Ask the caterer to set food counters and the tandoor on terraces or in the garden, never in a room with a rug.

Shoes are a hard conversation at weddings. Many guests will not remove them, and that is fine in rooms where the rugs are rolled away.

In rooms where rugs stay down, place a shoe rack and a mat at the door. Our guide on shoes on rugs explains the wear they cause.

How do you restore rugs after the wedding?

Restore rugs after the wedding in three steps: vacuum every rug that stayed down, inspect each one in daylight for marks, and treat or send for cleaning within a day or two. Stains set further every day they wait.

Vacuum slowly in two directions to lift glitter, rice, petals and confetti from the pile. Then lay the rug in good light and look for yellow from turmeric, orange from henna, grease from food and wax from candles.

Treat fresh marks gently: blot with cold water and a little wool safe detergent after testing a hidden corner. For turmeric or henna that has set, or for anything on Botanical Silk, book a professional rug cleaner rather than scrubbing.

Then unroll the stored rugs, let them relax flat for a day, and put the house back together. A festive refresh is a good moment to rethink which rug goes where.

Rugberry also suggests a quick photo of each room before the functions begin. It records where every rug and piece of furniture stood, which makes putting the house back far quicker when the guests have gone.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove rugs before a wedding function at home?

Remove pale, deep pile and Botanical Silk rugs before a wedding function at home, and any rug in a room used for haldi, mehendi, food or dancing. Low, mid toned wool rugs can stay in sitting rooms under a cotton sheet.

Can haldi be done on a rug?

Haldi should never be done on a handmade rug, because turmeric paste is a dye that sets quickly in wool and jute. Hold it on a washable cotton dhurrie, sheets or bare floor.

How should I store a rug during the wedding week?

Vacuum the rug, roll it pile inwards, wrap it in a cotton sheet and store it flat in a dry, locked room. Do not fold it or wrap it in plastic.

Which rug colour is best for a wedding at home?

Warm mid tones such as russet, rust and tan are the best rug colours for a wedding at home. They forgive turmeric, footprints and ghee better than ivory or pale sand.

How do I clean rugs after a wedding?

Vacuum each rug in two directions, inspect it in daylight, and blot fresh marks with cold water and a wool safe detergent. Send rugs with set turmeric, henna or grease to a professional cleaner within a few days.
