Luma: Handloom Botanical Silk in Four Colours

Luma is a plain handloom rug woven in Botanical Silk, a plant-based yarn, at a 10 mm thickness, in four colours: Greige, Charcoal, Gold and Gray. Choose the colour by your floor and your light, because on a sheen this strong the light does as much work as the dye.

In short

  • The Rugberry Luma rug is handloom woven in Botanical Silk, a plant-based yarn, not in silk from the silkworm, and its product pages say so.
  • Luma comes in Greige, Charcoal, Gold and Gray, at 10 mm, in 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14 and 12x15 ft, with any size and colour to order.
  • A Luma rug costs ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft, regular prices ex GST at the time of writing, the same for all four colours.
  • Greige suits pale marble and most living rooms, Charcoal suits light floors in bedrooms, Gold suits warm wood, and Gray suits cool grey stone.

Is the Luma rug real silk or Botanical Silk?

Luma is Botanical Silk, not silk from the silkworm. Every Luma product page lists the fibre as Botanical Silk, a plant-based yarn spun to give the sheen and cool hand that people associate with silk, and Rugberry names it that way so nobody buys a rug thinking it is something else.

The product titles on the store still read Luma Silk Rug, which is a short name for the look, not a fibre claim. The fibre line on each page is the one to trust, and Rugberry keeps the word silk alone for its true silk pieces, such as the hand knotted Couture.

The difference matters for care and for price. Silk from the cocoon is a protein filament; Botanical Silk is made from plant pulp. Rugberry's guide to silk and Botanical Silk explains both fibres side by side, and the glossary entry on Botanical Silk gives the short definition.

What does handloom Botanical Silk feel like underfoot?

A Luma rug feels cool and smooth underfoot, with a low, dense surface at 10 mm that lies flat rather than springing back. Rugberry describes it as cool underfoot, with a sheen that changes as the light moves, and that is the honest summary.

The 10 mm thickness puts Luma between the flat weaves and the plush piles. It is thinner than Grain at 12 to 14 mm and far thinner than Plush at 18 to 20 mm. Doors clear it easily, chair legs slide on it, and it does not trap the heat of a Delhi May the way a deep wool pile can.

What Luma does not do is bounce. Botanical Silk has little of the natural crimp that lets New Zealand wool recover, so a sofa leg or a dropped heel leaves a mark that needs a soft brush and time. That is the trade for the sheen.

How do Greige, Charcoal, Gold and Gray compare?

The four Luma colours share one weave, one thickness and one price, so the only decision is colour against floor, wall and light. The table sets them side by side, with prices as regular prices ex GST at the time of writing.

Colour Reads as Best floor Best room 8x10 ft price
Greige Warm grey with a beige base, pale and quiet White or beige marble, light oak, pale vitrified tile Living rooms, bedrooms, anywhere you want calm ₹79,000
Charcoal Deep grey that turns silver where light rakes across it Pale marble, white tile, bleached wood Bedrooms, studies, formal sitting rooms ₹79,000
Gold Soft gold with a strong glow at low sun Teak, walnut, warm Kota or Jaisalmer stone Drawing rooms, evening rooms lit by lamps ₹79,000
Gray Cool mid grey, steadier than Greige Grey granite, cool grey tile, concrete finish Modern apartments, cool palettes, home offices ₹79,000

For a first silk-look rug in a pale Indian living room, choose Greige over the other three, because it sits with the widest range of floors and fabrics and shows the sheen without shouting. Choose Charcoal only when you want the rug to be the darkest thing in the room.

Which Luma colour suits which floor?

Pick the Luma colour that contrasts gently with your floor rather than matching it, because a Botanical Silk rug that matches the floor exactly disappears, and one that contrasts hard shows every footprint. One or two steps lighter or darker is the target.

On white or Makrana-style marble, Greige gives a soft step and Charcoal gives a strong one. On the pale beige vitrified tiles found in most new apartments in Gurgaon, Noida, Pune and Bengaluru, Greige and Gray both work; Gray looks crisper next to white walls, Greige warmer next to wood.

On dark wood or deep red oxide floors, Gold is the obvious match: the warm floor pulls the gold forward and the sheen lifts the room. Charcoal on a dark floor reads as a hole, so avoid it there. Rugberry's guide to rugs for dark floors covers that pairing more broadly.

On Botanical Silk, the light chooses half the colour. Look at Luma at the hour you use the room.

How does light change each Luma colour through the day?

Every Luma colour shifts with the angle of light, because Botanical Silk reflects along the length of the yarn: look with the light behind you and the rug goes pale, look into the light and it goes deep. The effect is strongest in Charcoal and Gold.

Charcoal in a west facing bedroom reads almost black at noon and silver at five in the evening, when the sun comes in low. Gold in lamplight glows warm and close to amber; in grey monsoon daylight it settles to a soft biscuit. Greige and Gray change less, which is why they are easier to live with in rooms used all day.

Two practical checks help. Order a swatch and lay it on the floor at the hour you use the room most, then walk round it; Rugberry's guide to checking a swatch explains the method. Then read Rugberry's notes on lighting and sheen for how lamps and windows change a rug's colour.

Direct, strong sun is the one thing to plan around. Any dyed fibre can fade under years of afternoon sun through glass, so draw a sheer at the hottest hours and rotate the rug twice a year so the light falls evenly.

Which rooms suit a Luma rug, and which do not?

Luma suits rooms with moderate, shoeless footfall: bedrooms, studies, formal sitting rooms and living rooms in homes without heavy daily traffic. It does not suit entrances, dining rooms with frequent spills, or homes where a dog sleeps on the rug.

  • Bedroom. A 6x9 or 8x10 ft Luma under the lower two thirds of a queen or king bed. Cool underfoot in summer, quiet in colour.
  • Formal sitting room. An 8x10 or 9x12 ft Luma in Greige or Gold under the seating, with the front legs of each chair on the rug.
  • Study. A 5x8 ft Luma in Gray or Charcoal under a reading chair, away from a rolling desk chair.
  • Not the entrance. Grit from outside dulls Botanical Silk. Choose wool or jute at the door.
  • Not under the dining table. Dal, curry and chai mark Botanical Silk faster than wool. Choose a low wool weave such as Grain.

Rugberry also shows Luma in Greige at the Noida Experiential Centre in 5x8 ft, so you can stand on it before deciding. The store locator lists the centre and the partner stores.

How do you care for a Luma Botanical Silk rug?

Care for a Luma rug by vacuuming regularly on suction only, blotting spills at once with a dry white cloth, and leaving any deep cleaning to a professional. The product pages give exactly that note: vacuum regularly, professional cleaning only.

Botanical Silk does not like water. A wet patch can lose its sheen or leave a ring as it dries, so never scrub, never use a household foam shampoo and never put the rug out in the rain to rinse. Press out a spill with folded cloths, working from the edge inward, and let it air dry flat with a fan.

A rotating brush bar can pull at the surface, so switch it off or use a soft upholstery head. Rotate the rug every six months, and keep heavy furniture on cups so the pile is not crushed in one place. Rugberry's guide to wool and Botanical Silk compares how each fibre wears over the years.

If you love the sheen but need more forgiveness, Rugberry's Nuva rugs are a handloom Botanical Silk alternative in camel, chocolate and beige, and the silk rugs collection includes wool and Botanical Silk blends that bounce back more easily.

Which Luma size and colour should you order?

Order the Luma size that lets the front legs of your seating or the lower two thirds of your bed sit on the rug, and the colour one or two steps away from your floor. For most Indian living rooms that means an 8x10 ft rug in Greige.

All four colours are listed at the same regular prices ex GST at the time of writing: ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹53,000 for 6x9 ft, ₹79,000 for 8x10 ft, ₹1,06,000 for 9x12 ft, ₹1,37,000 for 10x14 ft and ₹1,76,000 for 12x15 ft. That works out to about ₹990 per sq ft at 8x10 ft.

Each colour is also listed in any size and any colour to order, made to your measure. If none of the four suits a particular wall or sofa, ask Rugberry for a custom colour on the same handloom Botanical Silk. See the Greige, Charcoal, Gold and Gray pages, or the whole Luma collection.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Rugberry Luma rug made of real silk?

No. The Rugberry Luma rug is handloom woven in Botanical Silk, a plant-based yarn with a silk-like sheen, and every Luma product page lists that fibre. Rugberry keeps the word silk alone for true silk pieces such as Couture.

What colours does the Luma rug come in?

The Luma rug comes in four colours: Greige, Charcoal, Gold and Gray. Each is listed in six standard sizes from 5x8 to 12x15 ft, and Rugberry also makes Luma in custom colours on request.

How thick is a Luma rug?

A Luma rug is 10 mm thick, according to its product pages. That makes it lower than Rugberry's Grain at 12 to 14 mm and Plush at 18 to 20 mm, so it clears doors and suits rooms where a deep pile would feel heavy.

Can a Botanical Silk rug go in a dining room?

A Botanical Silk rug is not the best choice under a dining table, because water and oily spills can mark the sheen. A low wool weave such as the Rugberry Grain rug handles daily meals more easily.

How much does a Luma rug cost in India?

Luma starts at ₹40,000 for 5x8 ft and reaches ₹1,76,000 for 12x15 ft, regular prices ex GST at the time of writing. All four colours cost the same, so choose the colour for the room first and the size second.
