8x10 Rug: The Most Useful Size Explained
An 8x10 rug, 240x300 cm, is the size that holds a full Indian sitting arrangement: a 7 ft three seater and two armchairs, each with its front legs on the rug. It needs a living room of about 12x14 ft or more, and below that it starts to fight the walls.
In short
- An 8x10 ft rug measures 240x300 cm and covers 80 sq ft, exactly twice the floor of a 5x8 ft rug.
- An 8x10 ft rug holds a 7 ft three seater sofa and two armchairs across a coffee table, with the front legs of every seat on the rug.
- An 8x10 ft rug needs a living room of about 12x14 ft or larger, so that 1 to 2 ft of floor shows around it.
- The Rugberry Congrand Wool Rug and Cabella Wool & Silk Rug in mink are both made in 8x10 ft, and start from about ₹37,000 and ₹41,000 in their smallest stock size.
Why is 8x10 the most useful rug size?
An 8x10 is the most useful size because it matches the footprint of the most common Indian sitting arrangement. A three seater on one side, two chairs facing it across a coffee table, and enough rug around them that no seat is left on bare floor.

It is also the size most designs are made in. Across the Rugberry range, 8x10 ft is stocked almost as widely as 5x8 ft, which makes it the easiest size to choose a colour and fibre in rather than settle for what is available.
How do a three seater and two chairs sit on an 8x10?
Lay the 10 ft side along the sofa. A 7 ft three seater then has 1.5 ft of rug beyond each arm, with its front legs about 15 cm on to the rug.

Across from it, the arithmetic runs like this:
- 15 cm under the sofa front.
- About 45 cm of legroom, then a coffee table about 60 cm deep.
- Another 45 cm of legroom, then two armchairs about 75 cm deep.
That adds up to roughly 2.3 m of the rug's 2.4 m depth, so the chairs sit fully on the rug with a strip showing behind them. The layout follows the same logic as our rug placement guide.
What room size does an 8x10 rug need?
An 8x10 rug needs a living room of at least 12x14 ft, so the rug keeps 1 to 2 ft of floor around it. In smaller halls it reaches the walls, and a rug that touches a wall looks like fitted flooring rather than a rug.
| Living room | 8x10 ft verdict |
|---|---|
| 10x12 ft | Too big, choose 6x9 ft |
| 11x13 ft | Tight, only if the TV is wall mounted |
| 12x14 ft | Fits, with about 2 ft of floor on each side |
| 13x16 ft | Fits well |
| 15x18 ft and up | Can look small, consider 9x12 ft |
Every seat should have at least its front legs on the rug, and the rug should never touch a wall.
Where does an 8x10 rug not work?
An 8x10 rug does not work in a hall under about 11x13 ft, under an L shaped sofa, or across an open living and dining room. In each case the rug either crowds the walls or ends up the wrong shape for the furniture.

- L shaped sofas. The long arm of an L often runs 9 to 10 ft, and the rug needs to clear both arms. See our guide to the rug size for an L shaped sofa.
- Open plan halls. If the rug drifts under the dining chairs, it is doing two jobs badly. Give the dining side its own rug or none.
- Doors. Check that every door opening over the rug clears its thickness, especially bedroom doors that open into the hall.
Congrand, Cabella or Grain in 8x10?
For a family living room used every day, choose Congrand over Cabella, because a hand tufted wool pile takes traffic and the odd spill more calmly than a wool and silk blend.

Congrand Wool Rug
The Rugberry Congrand Wool Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool on a generous scale, built for a room with space to give. Its dense pile holds its shape, and the camel and ivory tones sit well on beige vitrified tile and warm marble.
Cabella Wool & Silk Rug in mink
The Cabella in mink is hand tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, with a low sheen that lifts as the light moves across the room. It suits a formal drawing room where shoes are left at the door.
Grain Wool Rug in sage
The Grain Wool Rug in sage is handloom woven in New Zealand wool with a low, closely worked surface. It suits a hall where furniture is moved often, because chairs slide over it rather than catch.
How do you check an 8x10 before ordering?
Arrange the furniture first, then measure the seating, not the room. Measure from the outside of one armchair to the outside of the other and from the back of the sofa to the back of the chairs.

If the width is under 9 ft and the depth under 8 ft, an 8x10 will hold the group. If either number is larger, look at a 9x12, and if both are much smaller, a 6x9 will look better proportioned.
Frequently asked questions
Is an 8x10 rug too big for a 12x12 ft room?
It fits, but only with about 1 to 2 ft of floor on each side. In a 12x12 ft room with a TV unit and a walking route, a 6x9 often leaves the room feeling more open.
What is an 8x10 rug in centimetres?
An 8x10 rug is 240x300 cm. It covers 80 sq ft, or about 7.4 square metres.
Should all sofa legs sit on an 8x10 rug?
Front legs on the rug is enough for a sofa against a wall. If the sofa floats in the room, an 8x10 can take all four legs of a three seater, with the chairs opposite also fully on the rug.
Does an 8x10 rug suit a bedroom?
Yes, under a queen bed laid crosswise, with about 1.5 ft of rug showing on each side. Under a king bed it is a little short at the sides, and a 9x12 sits better.
Measure the seating, then the room. Material first.
