Do Jute Rugs Shed: What to Expect

Yes, jute rugs shed. Jute is a stiff plant fibre, and as it flexes underfoot it breaks off in short bits and a fine golden dust that collects under and around the rug.

In short

  • All jute rugs shed some fibre, so no jute rug is shed free.
  • Jute shedding looks like short, straw coloured bits and fine dust, not the soft fluff a wool rug leaves.
  • Jute rugs shed most where they bend or are scraped, such as under chair legs, at doorways and along edges.
  • A firm rug pad, lifting chairs instead of dragging them, and keeping jute dry all reduce jute fibre loss.

Rugberry jute rugs are handwoven or hand knotted, and both kinds lose some fibre. Knowing what to expect is the difference between liking jute and regretting it.

What does jute shedding look like?

Jute shedding looks like small, stiff, straw coloured pieces and a fine dust, rather than the soft clumps of fluff a wool rug leaves. Much of it falls through the weave and gathers on the floor under the rug.

Lift a corner of a jute rug after a week and you will usually find a light layer of fibre dust on the tile. On a white marble or a pale vitrified floor it can look like sand. That is the rug doing what jute does.

Why does jute lose fibre?

Jute loses fibre because it is a bast fibre from the stem of a plant, strong in length but brittle when bent again and again. Each time a foot presses the weave, the fibres flex slightly, and over time the outer ones crack and come away.

Wool behaves differently. A wool fibre has crimp and can bend thousands of times and spring back, so it releases loose fibre rather than breaking. Jute does not have that spring, which is also why it feels firm and textured underfoot.

For a family that wants the least fibre on the floor, choose a dense wool rug over jute, because wool fibre bends without breaking. Our post on why wool rugs shed explains the wool side.

Where in an Indian home does jute shed most?

Jute sheds most where it is scraped or folded: under dining chairs, at a doorway where shoes come off, and anywhere the rug ripples or bends.

  • Under a dining table. Chairs pulled back across the weave grind the surface. Lift chairs, or add felt pads to the legs.
  • At the main door. Grit from outside acts like sandpaper on plant fibre. Shake the rug out more often here.
  • On a slippery floor. A jute rug that slides on polished marble creases and flexes, and the crease lines shed first.
  • Near water. Damp makes jute weaker, so a rug by a bathroom door or a monsoon balcony breaks down faster.

Jute does not wear out from being walked on. It wears out from being bent, dragged and left damp.

How do you keep jute fibre loss down?

You keep jute fibre loss down by stopping the rug from moving, keeping it dry, and cleaning it without a brush that tears at the surface.

  1. Lay a firm, flat rug pad underneath so the rug cannot slide and crease on marble or tile.
  2. Vacuum on suction only and lift the rug now and then to sweep the dust beneath it.
  3. Take smaller jute rugs outside and shake them from one end, which clears dust from inside the weave.
  4. Rotate the rug every few months so wear is spread across it.
  5. In the monsoon, keep the room aired and never put a jute rug down on a floor that is still wet from mopping.

Do handwoven and hand knotted jute rugs shed differently?

They shed in slightly different ways. A handwoven flatweave such as the Kora Jute Rug or the Masai Jute Rug has its fibre locked into rows, with few cut ends on the face, so most loss is fine dust from wear.

A hand knotted jute rug such as the Savannah Jute Rug in cashew has a face of cut ends, so it releases more short bits early on as the loose ends work free. In return it has more depth and a softer step than a flatweave.

Is a jute rug right for you if fibre on the floor bothers you?

A jute rug is right for you if you like its firm texture and can live with a little dust under it. If every bit of fibre on the floor will annoy you, choose wool.

Jute repays the trade. The Kora and Masai rugs start from about ₹28,000 in 5x8 ft at Rugberry, and the hand knotted Savannah from about ₹41,000, which is less than most wool pile rugs of the same size. They also bring a calm, natural tone that suits terracotta, cane and teak. See the full range of Rugberry jute rugs.

Frequently asked questions

Will a jute rug stop shedding after some time?

A jute rug sheds most when it is new and when it is being bent or scraped, and the loss settles as loose surface fibre is cleared. Because jute is a plant fibre that breaks rather than bends, some fine dust will always be part of owning one.

Is jute dust harmful?

Jute dust is plant fibre, the same as the dust from a jute bag or rope. Regular vacuuming and lifting the rug to clean beneath it keeps the amount small.

Can I wash a jute rug to stop it shedding?

No. Water weakens jute and can leave brown marks, so washing makes fibre loss worse. Dry methods such as vacuuming and shaking out are the right way to clean jute.

Choose jute for its texture and its honesty, and keep it dry. Material first.
