Rugs on Wooden Floors in Indian Homes

A rug suits a wooden or laminate floor well, but it can mark it, through uneven sun fading, trapped grit, damp or a reactive underlay. A few habits, and the right underlay, keep both the floor and the rug in good shape.

In short

  • A rug can mark a wooden or laminate floor, most often through uneven sun fading around its edge, grit trapped underneath, or damp held against the boards.
  • On laminate and engineered wood, use a felt or felt and natural rubber underlay, and avoid PVC or adhesive pads that can react with the finish.
  • Greens and warm neutrals, such as the Rugberry Eucalyptus Wool Rug and Grain Wool Rug in sage, sit naturally on honey and mid brown wood.
  • In the monsoon, lift a corner of any rug on laminate every couple of weeks to check for damp underneath.

Laminate and engineered wood are now common in apartments in Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. They behave differently from marble and vitrified tile, so a rug needs slightly different care on them.

Can a rug damage a wooden or laminate floor?

Yes, a rug can mark a wooden or laminate floor, though the damage is preventable. The four usual causes are light, grit, moisture and the wrong underlay.

  • Light. Sun fades and yellows wood finishes. The floor under the rug stays its original colour, so moving the rug later reveals a visible outline.
  • Grit. Fine sand trapped under a rug grinds against the finish each time someone steps on it.
  • Moisture. A spill or a mopped floor that dries under a rug holds damp against the boards, which can swell laminate edges.
  • Underlay. Some PVC and cheap rubber pads soften in heat and leave a pattern or stain on the finish.

The rug is rarely the problem. The light around it, the grit beneath it and the pad under it are.

How do you stop uneven fading around a rug?

Move the rug a few centimetres every few months and turn it twice a year, so no single line between covered and uncovered floor forms. Sheer curtains on west facing windows help both the floor and the rug.

A new laminate or engineered floor fades fastest in its first year. If you can, leave the room without a rug for the first few months, or shift the rug often during that time. Our post on rug fading in sunlight covers the rug's side of the same problem.

Which rug construction is gentlest on wood?

A handloom or handwoven rug, with no glued backing, is gentlest on a wooden floor, because only woven fibre touches the boards. A hand tufted rug is fine too, with a felt underlay between the backing and the wood.

Hand tufted rugs have a latex coat and a backing cloth on the reverse that hold the tufts in place. A felt underlay keeps that backing from rubbing against the finish and evens out the pressure of furniture legs.

The Rugberry Grain Wool Rug in sage is handloom woven in New Zealand wool with a low, closely worked surface, from about ₹37,000 in 5x8 ft. On wood, choose a handloom rug like this over a hand tufted one if you want the simplest care, because there is no backing to manage.

Which underlay is safe on laminate and engineered wood?

Use felt, or felt bonded to natural rubber, on laminate and engineered wood. Avoid PVC grip mesh and any pad with an adhesive face, as these can mark or discolour some finishes over time.

Cut the underlay about 2 to 3 cm smaller than the rug on every side, so it does not show. Before laying it under the whole rug, place a small piece on a hidden corner of the floor for a fortnight and check for any change in the finish.

Which rug colours work with wooden floors?

Greens and warm neutrals suit most Indian wooden floors, because they sit alongside the yellow and red undertones of oak, teak and walnut finishes rather than fighting them.

The Rugberry Eucalyptus Wool Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool in a muted green, soft and slightly grey, described as easy against wood and stone. It starts from about ₹37,000 and comes in every stock size from 5x8 to 12x15 ft.

On a dark walnut or wenge floor, a lighter rug gives the room contrast. The Cabella Wool and Silk Rug in latte is hand tufted in wool and silk with a low sheen, from about ₹41,000, and lifts a dark floor without going stark white.

How do you look after a rug on laminate in the monsoon?

Keep the floor under the rug dry. Laminate is a fibreboard core under a printed layer, and it swells if water sits at its joints.

  1. Never mop under a rug. Lift or fold it back, mop, and let the floor dry fully before laying it down.
  2. Every couple of weeks in the monsoon, lift a corner and feel the floor. If it is cool and damp, roll the rug back for a few hours with the fan on.
  3. Wipe up spills on the rug quickly and blot through to the floor beneath.

Frequently asked questions

Can a rug discolour a laminate floor?

Yes. A rug can leave an outline if the surrounding floor fades in the sun, and some PVC or rubber pads can stain the finish. Move the rug from time to time and use a felt or felt and natural rubber underlay.

Do I need an underlay for a rug on engineered wood?

An underlay is advisable, especially under a hand tufted rug with a backing. A felt underlay protects the finish from rubbing and grit, and evens out the pressure of furniture.

Which rug colour goes with a teak or oak floor?

Muted greens, sage, oatmeal and latte tones sit well on teak and oak, because they work with the floor's warm undertones. Very orange or yellow rugs can make a honey floor look brassy.

Is it safe to mop a laminate floor with a rug on it?

Mop around the rug, never under it. Lift or fold the rug back, let the floor dry completely, then put the rug back down.

Wood and wool age well together, and Rugberry customisable rugs can be made in a colour to suit the boards. See the green rugs. Material first.
