Carved Rugs: High Low Pile Explained

A high low pile rug has two or more pile heights in one surface, so parts of the design stand proud and parts sit lower. The lines between them are carved by hand after the rug is made, and in low, slanting light they cast fine shadows that draw the pattern.

In short

  • A high low pile rug, also called a carved or sculpted rug, uses different pile heights in one rug so the design shows in depth as well as colour.
  • Carving means cutting a narrow channel or bevel into the pile with hand held shears or clippers, after the rug has been tufted or knotted.
  • Carved rugs read most clearly on pale, plain floors such as Indian white marble, where side light picks out every step in the pile.
  • At Rugberry, the Terraform Wool & Silk Rug and the Crinkle Wool & Silk Rug are hand tufted carved surfaces, both from about ₹40,000 in 5x8 ft.

Most rugs ask you to look at their colour. A carved rug also asks you to notice the light.

What is a high low pile rug?

A high low pile rug is a rug whose surface is cut to different heights on purpose. A higher area might be the motif and a lower area the ground, or the heights might flow into each other like contours on a map.

The effect works even in a single colour. An ivory rug carved in two heights shows its pattern clearly, because each step catches the light differently. See the glossary entries for high low pile and carving.

How is a rug carved by hand?

Carving is done after the rug is tufted or knotted and sheared level. A carver works along the lines of the design with hand held shears or small electric clippers, cutting a bevel or a channel into the pile.

  • Outline carving cuts a thin groove around a shape so it stands out.
  • Step carving lowers a whole area so it sits beneath its neighbour.
  • Sculpting slopes the pile gradually, so heights flow into each other.

The skill is in the angle and the steadiness of the cut. A clean bevel throws a crisp shadow, and a wobbly one blurs the drawing.

Why does a carved rug look best on marble?

A carved rug looks best on a pale, smooth floor because the floor reflects light back up across the pile, lighting the high edges and leaving the channels in shade. White or pale grey marble, common in Indian homes, does this especially well.

Light coming in low through a window, in the morning or late afternoon, rakes across the surface and makes every step readable. Under a single overhead light, the same rug looks flatter. Place a carved rug where side light reaches it.

A carved rug draws in shadow. Give it pale stone and light from the side.

Use a breathable underlay on marble, as explained in our guide to rugs for marble and tile floors.

How does Terraform use carving?

The Terraform Wool & Silk Rug is contoured like ground seen from above, so its surface reads like a relief map in wool and silk. The silk adds a low sheen that shifts as you cross the room, on top of the shifts in height.

Terraform starts from about ₹40,000 in 5x8 ft. Our full Terraform guide looks at its colours and rooms.

How is Crinkle different?

The Crinkle Wool & Silk Rug folds and creases its surface like worked paper, so instead of long contours you see short, sharp changes of plane. It is hand tufted in wool and silk, soft, with a low sheen, from about ₹40,000 in 5x8 ft.

For a large, calm room, choose a long, flowing carve like Terraform over a busy, folded one, because broad contours stay restful at a distance. Crinkle suits a smaller room or a bedroom where you see the surface up close. Larger statement pieces like the Ondulation Rug, its surface running in long even undulations in 10x13 ft, take the same idea across a whole floor.

How do you care for a carved rug?

Care for a Rugberry carved rug as you would any wool pile, but vacuum along the direction of the carving and use a soft brush to lift dust from the channels. Avoid a hard beater bar, which can blunt the edges.

  • Brush the channels with a dry, soft brush every few weeks.
  • Rotate the rug so the same carved edges are not walked on every day.
  • Blot spills straight away, as liquid can pool in a lower channel.

Our shaped rugs sit well with carved surfaces if you want depth and outline together.

Frequently asked questions

Is a high low pile rug harder to clean?

A high low pile rug needs a little more care, because dust can settle in the lower channels. A soft brush and regular vacuuming along the carve keep it clean.

Does carving weaken a rug?

Carving removes some pile height but does not cut into the base of the rug, so a well carved rug stays sound. The lower areas simply have a shorter pile.

Can a carved rug be made in a custom size?

Yes. Most Rugberry carved designs, including Terraform and Crinkle, can be made in any size to order, and the carving is planned to the new dimensions.
