Large Rugs for Big Living Rooms and Villas

In a villa or farmhouse drawing room, choose one 10x14 ft or 12x15 ft rug when a single seating group fills the room, and two or three rugs when the room holds separate zones. The size of the furniture group decides, not the size of the room.

In short

  • A 12x15 ft (360x450 cm) rug covers 180 sq ft and suits one large seating group, such as two sofas facing each other with a pair of chairs, in a villa drawing room.
  • A 10x14 ft (300x420 cm) rug covers 140 sq ft and suits an L shaped sofa with two chairs in a hall of about 16x20 ft.
  • A drawing room longer than about 22 ft that holds a seating area and a second zone, such as a reading corner or a piano, usually looks better with two rugs than with one stretched rug.
  • Rugberry's largest stock size is 12x15 ft, and a bigger single rug is a custom order through the customisable rugs collection.

Indian villas, bungalows and farmhouses often have drawing rooms that run past 20 ft, sometimes with a double height ceiling. These rooms are generous, which is exactly why a single rug can look lost in them.

When is one large rug the right answer?

One large rug is right when every piece of seating belongs to the same conversation. If people on the furthest chairs can talk without raising their voices, the group is one zone and wants one rug.

In practice that means two three seater sofas facing each other across a coffee table, with two lounge chairs closing the ends. That group measures about 11x14 ft to the front legs, which is a 12x15 ft rug.

The Rugberry 12x15 ft rugs collection holds the designs stocked at this size. For a slightly smaller group, the 10x14 ft rugs are the next step down.

When should a big room have two or three rugs?

Use two or three rugs when the room holds two or more separate activities. A formal seating group, a family television corner and a reading nook are three zones, even under one roof.

  • Leave 60 to 90 cm of floor between rugs, enough to read as a path, not a gap someone forgot to cover.
  • Keep the rugs in one family, either the same fibre in different tones or the same tone in different textures.
  • Let the main rug be the largest, so the eye knows which zone leads.

How do you size a rug for a villa drawing room?

Size the rug to the furniture group plus 20 to 30 cm beyond the front legs, then check that a floor border of at least 45 cm remains to the walls. In a big room, a generous border is part of the look.

16x20 ft L shaped sofa and two chairs One 10x14 ft (300x420 cm)
18x22 ft Two sofas facing, two chairs One 12x15 ft (360x450 cm)
18x28 ft Seating group and reading corner One 12x15 ft plus one 6x9 ft
20x34 ft Formal seating, family seating, piano One 12x15 ft, one 9x12 ft and one 5x8 ft

These plans use stock sizes only. When the main group is larger than 12x15 ft, the rug moves into custom sizing.

What happens when a room needs a rug larger than 12x15 ft?

A single rug larger than 12x15 ft is a custom order. Most Rugberry designs, including the Cadence and Congrand wool rugs, are listed in any size to order through the customisable rugs collection.

Before you order, check the route the rug will take into the house. A 15x18 ft wool rug rolls into a heavy cylinder over 4.5 m long, and a farmhouse staircase or a villa lift may not take it.

Weigh, too, whether one huge rug is what the room needs. Two stock rugs with a clean path between them often look more considered than one rug wall to wall.

In a big room, the furniture group decides the rug. The walls only decide the border.

Which rugs hold up at large sizes?

Dense, even constructions hold up best at large sizes, because a big rug shows every variation in pile across a long stretch of floor. Rugberry offers two good routes at 10x14 and 12x15 ft.

The Cadence Wool Rug is hand tufted New Zealand wool in stepped bands that shift tone from edge to edge, from about ₹40,000 in 5x8 ft. The Congrand Wool Rug is hand tufted New Zealand wool on a generous scale, built for a room with space to give, from about ₹37,000.

The Plush Wool Rug in Ivory, handloom wool with a deep, quiet pile, suits a formal drawing room used mostly in the evenings. For a hall where children play on the floor all day, choose a hand tufted wool such as Cadence over the deeper plush, because a dense cut pile keeps its surface more evenly under constant traffic.

How do you keep a large rug calm in a big room?

Keep a large rug calm by choosing a pattern whose scale matches the room. A small, busy motif repeated across 180 sq ft turns into texture, while a broad band or a soft tonal shift reads clearly from the doorway.

The stepped bands of the Cadence Wool Rug work well here, since the tone moves slowly from one edge to the other across the full length. In a double height room, plain ivory or camel lets the architecture lead.

Rotate a large rug once or twice a year, because sunlight from tall windows falls on the same strip every afternoon. Turning it end to end evens out the fading across the whole surface.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest stock rug size at Rugberry?

The largest stock size is 12x15 ft, which is 360x450 cm and 180 sq ft. Larger sizes are made to order through the customisable rugs collection.

Is one big rug better than two smaller rugs in a large living room?

One big rug is better when all the seating forms a single conversation group. When the room holds two or more activities, two or three rugs with 60 to 90 cm of floor between them usually read better.

How much floor should show around a rug in a villa drawing room?

Leave at least 45 cm between the rug and the walls in a large room, and more is fine. A wide border frames the rug and keeps the room from feeling covered wall to wall.

Let the furniture set the size, and the room set the frame. Material first.
