Runner Rugs: Lengths for Corridors and Kitchens
A runner should leave 10 to 15 cm of floor on each side and stop 15 to 30 cm short of each end of a corridor. In most Indian apartments that means a narrow, made to measure piece rather than a stock size.
In short
- A runner rug should leave 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) of floor on each side and 15 to 30 cm at each end of the space.
- An apartment corridor about 3.5 ft wide takes a runner about 2.5 to 2.75 ft wide.
- The Rugberry Nahda Rug is 3.5x8 ft (100x250 cm), the one runner proportioned rug in the stock range, and suits passages about 4.5 ft wide or a bedside.
- Other runner lengths and widths are made to measure, for example in the Grain Wool Rug in flax or the Kora Jute Rug, which can both be made to any size.
How wide should a runner be?
A runner should be 20 to 30 cm narrower than the corridor, leaving 10 to 15 cm of floor on each side. That strip of floor is what makes a runner look laid rather than fitted.

Most corridors in Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru apartments run between 3 and 4 ft wide. Measure at the narrowest point, which is usually where a cupboard or a door frame steps in.
- A 3 ft corridor takes a runner about 2.25 to 2.5 ft wide.
- A 3.5 ft corridor takes a runner about 2.5 to 2.75 ft wide.
- A 4.5 ft passage takes a runner about 3.5 ft wide.
How long should a runner be for a corridor?
A runner should stop 15 to 30 cm short of each end of the corridor and should not pass under any door. In an apartment corridor with bedroom doors opening off it, measure between the door sweeps, not wall to wall.

Bedroom doors in most apartments open inward, away from the corridor, so they rarely catch. Bathroom and utility doors sometimes open outward, and the runner has to end before them.
For a corridor with a turn, use two runners rather than one bent around the corner. Leave the same 15 to 30 cm of floor at the turn as at the ends. Our guide to hallway runners covers longer passages.
A runner should stop short of every door, every corner and every end. The floor around it is part of the design.
What runner size suits an Indian kitchen?
In a parallel or galley kitchen, a runner about 2 to 2.5 ft wide and as long as the main working counter suits most homes. It sits where you stand to cook and wash, not across the whole floor.

Keep it 10 to 15 cm clear of the cabinet plinths on both sides, so drawers and doors open over floor rather than rug. In an L shaped kitchen, run it along the longer arm only.
For a kitchen, choose wool over jute, because jute dislikes water and a kitchen floor is mopped every day. No rug is spill proof, so lift the runner before the floor is mopped and let the floor dry first.
Where does the Nahda Rug fit?
The Nahda Rug is hand tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, rising in a single arc across the field, from about ₹45,000. At 3.5x8 ft, or 100x250 cm, it is the one runner proportioned rug in the Rugberry stock range.
It suits a wide passage of about 4.5 ft, a long foyer, or the side of a bed where you step out each morning. It is not a kitchen runner, since wool and silk is better kept where shoes come off and water stays away.
How do you order a runner in another length?
Order it made to measure. Most Rugberry designs can be made in any size through the customisable rugs route, so a runner is the same rug in a narrower shape.

| Space | Typical runner width | Length guide |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment corridor, 3 to 3.5 ft | 2.25 to 2.75 ft | Corridor length less 30 to 60 cm |
| Wide passage, 4.5 ft | 3.5 ft | Between door sweeps |
| Galley kitchen | 2 to 2.5 ft | Length of the main working counter |
| Bedside | 2.5 to 3.5 ft | Length of the bed |
Two designs suit custom runners particularly well. The Grain Wool Rug in flax is handloom New Zealand wool with a low surface that does not trip a foot, good for a corridor or a kitchen.
The Kora Jute Rug is handwoven jute, firm and textured, good for a dry corridor near the entrance. Both can be made to any size.
How do you keep a runner in place?
Use an underlay cut slightly smaller than the runner. On vitrified tile and polished marble, a runner walked on all day creeps towards one end without one.

Turn the runner end to end every few months. A corridor wears along one line, usually at the bedroom doors, and rotation spreads that wear across the length.
Frequently asked questions
What size runner for a 3.5 ft corridor?
A runner about 2.5 to 2.75 ft wide, which leaves 10 to 15 cm of floor on each side. Its length should be the corridor length less 30 to 60 cm, stopping short of any door sweep.
Does Rugberry stock runners in different lengths?
The Nahda Rug at 3.5x8 ft is the runner proportioned piece in stock. Other lengths and widths are made to measure through the customisable rugs route.
Is a jute runner good for a kitchen?
Not usually. Jute dislikes water and kitchens are mopped daily, so a low wool runner is the better choice near the counter.
Measure between the doors, then leave the floor its edge. Material first.
