From Drawing to Rug: The Design Process

A rug design moves through four stages: a drawing, a scaled graph a maker can follow, a colour card, and a sample. Each stage is a chance to change your mind before the full rug is made.

In short

  • A rug design starts as a drawing or painting, which is scaled to the rug's size and translated into a graph, or a digital design file.
  • Colours in a rug design are chosen from a colour card of dyed yarn poms, not from a screen, because dyed wool and silk look different from pixels.
  • A sample, usually a small square in the real yarns and construction, is the most reliable way to approve a design before the full rug is made.
  • To brief a custom rug pattern, send the room size, a reference image, three to five colour references and the construction you prefer.

Rugberry designs move through these stages, and so does any custom pattern you bring. Knowing them helps you brief clearly and approve with confidence.

How does a rug design begin?

A rug design begins as a drawing, a painting or a reference: a landscape, a texture, a line repeated across a field. The idea is worked out at a small scale, often on paper.

The Terraform Wool & Silk Rug is a good example of an idea taken from the world. It is hand-tufted in New Zealand wool and silk, contoured like ground seen from above, from about ₹40,000. The reference is simple to name, and every later decision is checked against it.

How is a drawing turned into something a maker can follow?

The drawing is scaled up and turned into a graph, a grid where each square stands for a knot or a small area of pile, with a colour number in each. Today this is usually a digital design file.

This is where a design gains or loses its character. A soft brushstroke has to become a set of shapes the construction can hold. In hand tufting, fine lines are possible, and tones can be cut to different heights. In hand knotting, the knot count sets the smallest detail a line can carry. Our guide on rug CAD design goes deeper into the file stage.

Line and repeat

The Lyra Wool & Silk Rug is strung with fine vertical lines across the field. A design like this depends on spacing. On the graph, the gap between each line is fixed exactly, so the rhythm holds from one end of a 9x12 ft rug to the other.

How are colours chosen for a design?

Colours are chosen from dyed yarn, not from a screen. Each area on the graph is matched to a numbered colour pom, a small ball of real dyed wool or silk.

Screens and printed images shift colour. Yarn does not. A silk pom next to a wool pom in the same dye will look brighter and lighter, because silk reflects more light. That is why wool and silk designs like Terraform and Lyra are judged in the yarn, under daylight. See how custom rug colours are matched for the full method.

What happens at the sample stage?

At the sample stage, a small piece of the design is made in the real yarns and construction. It is the closest thing to the finished rug you can hold before the full rug is made.

A drawing shows the idea. A sample shows the rug. Approve the sample, not the picture.

A sample shows what a drawing cannot: how two colours sit side by side in wool, how high the silk stands against the pile, how a line reads at floor distance. Lay it on your actual floor, in the room, at the time of day you use it most. A white marble floor in a Delhi living room and a dark wooden floor in a Bengaluru apartment will change the same sample.

A sample is also where you correct. Ask for a colour to go one step warmer, a line to be finer, an area to be cut lower. Each change is cheaper on a sample than on a full rug.

How can an Indian designer brief a custom pattern?

Brief a custom rug pattern with five things: the room plan with the rug's size in feet, a reference image, three to five colour references, the construction you want, and how the room is used. Clear inputs give a faster, closer first sample.

  1. Size and placement. Mark the rug on the floor plan with furniture, so the pattern can be scaled to sit around a sofa or a bed.
  2. A reference. A photograph, a sketch or an existing Rugberry design to adjust, such as the Bergamo Rug with its soft geometry.
  3. Colour. Fabric swatches, a paint chip or a cushion. Physical references beat screenshots.
  4. Construction. Hand tufted for bold or carved designs, hand knotted for fine detail and the longest life.
  5. Use. A hotel lobby, a children's room and a quiet study each need different choices of fibre and pile.

Rugberry designs can be adjusted in size and colour through the customisable rugs route, which is often a simpler start than a design drawn from nothing.

Which constructions suit which kinds of pattern?

For bold shapes, carved contours and wool and silk contrast, choose hand tufting. For very fine detail and a rug meant to last generations, choose hand knotting, because the knot grid can carry small lines precisely.

For a plain, textured field with the weave as the design, choose handloom. Browse the Rugberry pattern rugs to see how each construction handles line, shape and colour.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send Rugberry my own drawing for a custom rug?

Yes. A clear drawing or image, with the size and colours you want, is a good start for a custom design. It will be scaled and translated into a design file, then sampled for your approval.

Why should I approve a sample instead of a digital image?

A digital image cannot show dyed yarn, pile height or the sheen of silk accurately. A sample in the real materials shows how the rug will look on your floor and in your light.

Can an existing Rugberry design be changed for my project?

Many Rugberry designs can be made in a different size or colour. Changing the size or colour of an existing design is often the quickest way to get a rug that fits a project.

Draw it, graph it, colour it, hold it. Material first.
