Rugs for Indore Homes

An Indore home does well with a two season rug plan: a firm jute or wool and jute weave from March to June, and a warmer handloom wool rug from November to February, with the monsoon spent on whichever dries faster. If you buy one rug, a 12 to 14 mm handloom wool in a coffee or sand tone covers the whole year.

In short

  • Indore sits on the Malwa plateau, with hot, dry summers, a green monsoon and cool, clear winters, so its rugs need to handle dust in May and cool floors in January.
  • A summer rug for Indore can be a firm jute or wool and jute weave at 7 to 14 mm; a winter rug can be a handloom New Zealand wool at 12 to 14 mm or deeper.
  • New villas and duplexes in Indore often have a double height living room and a staircase, which suit larger rugs and made to measure runners.
  • Rugberry has no store in Indore; clients order ₹800 swatches or visit the Noida Experiential Centre, and delivery anywhere in India is free.

What does Indore's year look like for a rug?

Indore's year asks a rug to handle dry heat and dust from March to June, a wet but pleasant monsoon from July to September, and cool, clear winters with chilly mornings. It is a central Indian climate, more moderate than the northern plains but with a real summer.

The city sits on the Malwa plateau, and its height above the plains takes the edge off the summer nights. Days in May are still hot and dry, and the wind carries dust from open ground and building sites into every home.

The monsoon turns the region green and brings humid weeks, but floors dry reasonably fast once the sun returns. Winter, from December to February, gives cool mornings when a stone floor feels cold and a rug is welcome.

So the Indore rug question is less about surviving one extreme and more about switching between comfort in summer and warmth in winter.

Which rug suits an Indore summer?

A firm, low jute weave or a wool and jute blend suits an Indore summer best, because it feels cool underfoot, does not hold heat and releases dust easily. Deep wool piles can wait for winter.

A firmer alternative is the Rugberry Meraki Jute & Silk Rug in Caramel: a jute weave made on a handloom, with fine threads of Botanical Silk for a quiet shine, 12 to 14 mm deep. Its regular price is ₹38,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹52,000 for 6x9 ft and ₹76,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

A wool and jute blend is a slightly softer summer choice. The Cabra Wool & Jute Rug in Sand is handloom woven in New Zealand wool and jute at 7 to 8 mm, low enough for chairs and doors, at a regular price of ₹34,000 for 5x8 ft and ₹68,000 for 8x10 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

Both share one rule in summer: keep them out of a direct afternoon sunbeam, and vacuum within a day of a dusty, windy evening. Our guide to the best rug for Indian summers compares more fibres.

Which rug suits an Indore winter?

A handloom New Zealand wool rug suits an Indore winter, warm enough to take the chill off a stone floor on December mornings without being heavy. A 12 to 14 mm weave covers most homes; an 18 to 20 mm pile is a luxury for bedrooms.

The Grain Wool Rug in Mochaccino is handloom woven in New Zealand wool at 12 to 14 mm, a coffee brown that hides dust well and warms the eye on a short winter afternoon. Its regular price is ₹37,000 for 5x8 ft, ₹74,000 for 8x10 ft and ₹1,02,000 for 9x12 ft, ex GST at the time of writing.

Summer wants a rug that stays cool and firm. Winter wants one that gives a little.

Because Grain sits between the two seasons, many Indore families leave it down all year and simply add or remove a second, smaller rug. Our comparison of Plush and Grain explains when a deeper pile is worth it.

Winter is also festival season, and Indore homes fill with family from Diwali onwards. A wool rug takes many guests in its stride, while a firm jute rug can show spilled tea and sweets more readily, which is another reason to put the wool back down in late October.

How do you set up rugs for both seasons in one home?

Set up rugs for both seasons by keeping one all year rug in each main room and rotating a second, seasonal rug where people are barefoot. It is simpler, and uses less storage, than swapping every rug twice a year.

Room All year rug March to June addition November to February addition
Living room Handloom wool, 12 to 14 mm, 8x10 ft Swap for jute or wool and jute if the room is very sunny None needed
Main bedroom Handloom wool, 6x9 ft at the foot of the bed None needed Small deep pile rug at the bedside
Children's room Handloom wool, 5x8 ft None needed None needed
Double height lounge Large wool rug or made to measure Firm jute in the reading corner None needed
Pooja or prayer corner Small wool rug Small jute rug Back to wool

Change over twice a year, in March and in late October before Diwali. Vacuum the rug you are putting away on both sides, roll it pile inward around a tube, wrap it in cotton and store it off the floor with neem leaves or cedar.

A rug that is used for only half the year also lasts twice as long, which softens the cost of owning two.

What size rugs suit an Indore villa or duplex?

An Indore villa or duplex usually suits a 9x12 ft or larger rug in a double height living room, 8x10 ft rugs in bedrooms and a made to measure runner on the landing. Generous rooms and high ceilings make standard apartment sizes look small.

Indore has grown quickly, and many families now live in new villas, row houses and duplex apartments with a tall living room overlooked by an upper landing. Seen from above, a rug becomes part of the architecture, so its size and shape matter more.

From the landing, a rug that is too small for the seating group looks like an island in a sea of tile. Size it so every sofa and chair stands at least partly on it, and keep its edges parallel to the room. Our guide to rugs for double height living rooms goes into scale.

Stairs and landings take heavy traffic. A low wool and jute runner, made to the exact length of the landing, is quieter than tile and safer than a loose small rug.

Kitchens in many new Indore homes open onto the dining area. Keep the dining rug clear of the kitchen threshold, or choose a low wool and jute weave there, as cooking oil and water travel further than you expect.

How do you keep rugs clean in a fast growing city?

Keep rugs clean in a fast growing city by vacuuming twice a week in the dry months, closing windows when nearby construction is active, and using a doormat at every entrance. Fine cement and soil dust is the main cause of dull, worn rugs.

Indore takes pride in being clean, but new neighbourhoods still mean new building sites, and their dust travels. It is finer than road dust and settles deep in a pile, so it pays to lift it often rather than let it build up.

Vacuum on suction only, without a beater bar, slowly in two directions. For jute, turn the rug over every few weeks and vacuum the back. For wool, a professional clean once a year, ideally in October, refreshes the pile before winter.

If a building site opens next door, roll the best rug away for the noisiest months. Our guide to dust and rugs in Indian homes and protecting a rug during renovation cover this in detail.

Where can Indore families see Rugberry rugs?

Rugberry has no store in Indore, or anywhere in Madhya Pradesh, at the time of writing. An Indore family can judge a rug from a swatch posted home first, and the full rugs can be seen at the Experiential Centre in Noida.

Before choosing, order two ₹800 swatches, one summer weight and one winter weight. Each is 30 x 30 cm, posts anywhere in India, and its cost is credited in full against the rug. Walk on both barefoot in your living room in the same week.

At the Noida Experiential Centre (E-131, Sector 63, open 10am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday) you can stand on Meraki in Caramel and Grain in Mochaccino among its 37 rugs. The rug itself ships to Indore free of charge, with GST at 5 percent added at checkout.

If you would like help planning a whole villa, the team will size every room with you from a floor plan over WhatsApp or email.

Frequently asked questions

Is jute too rough for an Indore living room?

Jute is firm rather than rough, and most people find it pleasant underfoot in summer. If you sit on the floor a lot, a wool and jute blend or a handloom wool rug is softer.

Can I leave one rug down all year in Indore?

Yes. A handloom New Zealand wool rug at 12 to 14 mm is comfortable through all three Indore seasons. Keep it out of strong afternoon sun and vacuum it often in May and June.

How should I store a rug in Indore's monsoon?

Store an off season rug rolled, wrapped in a cotton sheet and raised off the floor in a dry room. Unroll it for a few hours every couple of months so air can reach the fibre.

Does a Meraki rug need special care?

A Meraki rug needs to stay dry, as both jute and Botanical Silk dislike water. Vacuum it regularly, blot spills at once with a dry cloth and use a professional cleaner for anything more.

Is delivery to Indore free?

Yes, Rugberry delivers free to every address in India, including Indore. Prices exclude GST, which is added at 5 percent at checkout.
