Fringe on Rugs: Why Some Have It
Fringe on a hand knotted or handwoven rug is usually the warp itself: the lengthwise threads the rug was built on, left long at each end and tied off. A hand tufted rug has no warp to show, so any fringe on it is sewn on as a trim.
In short
- On a hand knotted or handwoven rug, the fringe is the ends of the warp threads, so it is part of the structure rather than a decoration.
- On a hand tufted rug, fringe is usually stitched on after making, because the pile is punched into a backing cloth that has no warp ends.
- Fringe is the part of a rug most likely to tangle in a robot vacuum or a beater bar, and dogs and cats often chew or pull it.
- A rug without fringe has its ends bound or finished with a woven edge, which is easier to keep neat in a busy home.
Why do some rugs have fringe?
Some rugs have fringe because they were built on a warp. Hand knotting and hand weaving both stretch warp threads along the length of the loom, and when the finished rug is cut free, those ends remain.

The ends are tied into small knots or bundles so the last rows cannot slip. A narrow flat woven band often sits between the pile and the fringe for the same reason.
Our guide to warp and weft explains the structure underneath in more detail.
Why do some rugs have no fringe?
Rugs without fringe either have no warp, like hand tufted rugs, or have had their warp ends turned under and bound.

A hand tufted rug is made by punching yarn into a stretched cloth and then backing it. There are no warp ends to leave, so the edges are bound with tape or yarn, and any fringe must be sewn on.
Many modern knotted and woven rugs also hide their warp, folding the ends back and stitching them, or finishing them with a woven edge. Which finish a particular rug has is best judged from its photos or by asking.
How does fringe cope with jhadu and vacuums?
Fringe is the part of a rug that daily cleaning catches most, so how you clean decides how long it stays neat.

- Jhadu. Sweep along the fringe, away from the rug, never across it. Sweeping across twists strands together and pulls them out of line.
- Upright vacuum. Switch off the beater bar near the ends, or lift the head before reaching the fringe, because a spinning brush can wrap a strand and snap it.
- Robot vacuum. Most robots tangle in fringe, so set a no go zone over the rug ends in the app or tuck the fringe under.
- Pochha. Keep the wet mop off the fringe, because a wet warp can shrink, yellow or pull the rug end out of square.
Comb a fringe straight with your fingers once a week. It takes a minute and stops strands from matting.
Fringe is the warp of the rug, left showing. Treat it as structure, not trim, and it lasts.
Is fringe a good idea with pets and children?
Fringe and pets are an uneasy pair: puppies chew it, cats pull it and toddlers tug it. A rug without fringe, or with the fringe tucked under, is the calmer choice for a home with a young dog.

When choosing a Rugberry rug for a home with a young dog, check the product photos for how the ends are finished. If you love a fringed rug, place the fringed ends where traffic is lightest, under a sofa or against a wall, so the long sides face the room. Short, tightly knotted fringe also survives better than long, loose strands.
A broken warp strand at the fringe should be secured early by a repairer. Left alone, the last rows of knots can start to loosen.
How should fringe be treated on a jute rug?
The ends of a jute rug need gentler handling than wool, because jute is a stiff plant fibre that weakens when wet and frays when twisted.

At Rugberry, the Savannah Jute Rug in natural is hand knotted in jute and the Kora Jute Rug is handwoven in jute, both firm, textured and better looking as they age. Whatever the finish at the ends of a jute rug, keep them dry, sweep with the grain and never wring them.
In the monsoon, keep jute ends off damp floors with a slim underlay, so the fibre at the edge stays dry.
How do you choose between fringe and no fringe?
Choose fringe for a relaxed or traditional look in a low traffic room, and no fringe for robot cleaned floors, pets and pared back modern rooms. For a home with a robot vacuum or a young dog, choose a rug with bound ends over a fringed one, because the fringe is what tangles and gets chewed.
A hand knotted rug such as the Rugberry Ithaca Rug, hand knotted in wool, is built on a warp whichever way its ends are finished. Pick the end finish that suits the room and the routine, not the one you think signals quality.
Frequently asked questions
Can you remove the fringe from a rug?
On a hand knotted or woven rug, the fringe is the warp, so it cannot simply be cut off without securing the ends first. A rug repairer can fold and bind the ends instead.
Why is rug fringe turning yellow?
Wool and cotton fringe can yellow from wet mopping, cleaning chemicals or strong sun. Keep the mop off the fringe and blot spills near the ends quickly.
Does fringe make a rug better quality?
No. Fringe shows how a rug was built, not how well it was built. Judge quality by the density of the pile and the evenness of the weave.
Can a robot vacuum be used on a fringed rug?
Yes, with care. Block the fringed ends with a no go zone or tuck the fringe under, because most robot brushes catch and wrap loose strands.
