Rug Pile Height in Millimetres
Pile height is the length of yarn standing above the woven base of a rug, measured in millimetres. Around 6 mm feels close and firm, around 10 mm feels cushioned, and 15 mm or more feels deep and soft underfoot.
In short
- Rug pile height is measured from the base of the rug to the tip of the yarn, not including the backing, and is usually given in mm.
- A pile of about 6 mm feels firm and suits dining rooms, a pile of about 10 mm feels cushioned, and 15 mm or more feels deep and soft.
- Before buying, measure the gap under any door that opens over the rug, because many Indian doors clear only 10 to 15 mm above the floor.
- At Rugberry, the Grain Wool Rug has a low, closely textured surface and the Plush Wool Rug a deep pile, both handloom woven in New Zealand wool.
A few millimetres sound small. Under a bedroom door or a dining chair, they decide whether the rug works at all.
How is pile height measured?
Pile height is measured from the top of the foundation, where the yarn leaves the base, to the tip of the pile. The total thickness of the rug is the pile plus the base, so a rug is always a little thicker than its pile height.

To measure one at home, part the pile, stand a steel ruler on the base and read where the yarn tips come to. The glossary entries for pile height and pile keep the terms straight.
What do 6, 10 and 15 mm feel like?
Each step changes how your foot sinks, how furniture sits and how the rug cleans.

| Pile height | How it feels | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| About 6 mm | Close and firm, like a thick tweed | Dining rooms, home offices, doorways |
| About 10 mm | Cushioned, your heel sinks a little | Living rooms, family rooms |
| About 15 mm | Deep and soft, feet sink in | Bedrooms, floor seating, reading corners |
| 25 mm and above | Shaggy, very soft | Bedside and low traffic corners |
A useful test is your own thumb. Press it into the pile: on a low rug you feel the base at once, on a deep rug the yarn closes over the nail.
Why does pile height matter under Indian doors?
Pile height matters because most internal doors in Indian flats are hung with a small gap above the floor, often only 10 to 15 mm. A rug thicker than that gap stops the door or drags against the pile every time it opens.
- Close the door and slide a ruler under it to measure the gap.
- Add the thickness of any underlay you plan to use.
- Choose a rug whose total thickness stays a few mm below the gap.
If the gap is small, place the rug clear of the door swing, or choose a low weave. For a bedroom where the door opens over the rug, choose a low pile over a deep one, because a door that scrapes will flatten and wear a path in the pile.
Measure the gap under the door before you fall for a deep pile.
When is a low pile the right choice?
A low pile is right where chairs move, where crumbs fall, and where the rug has to sit under a door. It also suits homes where someone uses a walker, since there is less to catch a foot.

The Rugberry Grain Wool Rug in Umber is handloom woven in New Zealand wool, low and closely textured, with the weave visible underfoot. It is tagged for dining rooms and living rooms and starts from about ₹37,000 in 5x8 ft.
When is a deep pile worth it?
A deep pile is worth it wherever you are barefoot or sitting low: beside the bed, in a floor seating corner, in a room where the family sits on the rug to watch a match. It also dampens sound well in flats with hard floors.

The Rugberry Plush Wool Rug in Chocolate is handloom woven in New Zealand wool with a deep, quiet pile, plush underfoot, from about ₹40,000 in 5x8 ft. Our guide to the Plush Collection covers its colourways.
How does pile height change care and cleaning?
A low pile is quicker to vacuum and dries faster after spot cleaning, which matters in humid months. A deep pile holds more dust at its base, so it needs a slower vacuum, more often.

- On a deep pile, vacuum in two directions to lift dust that settles in.
- On any pile, blot spills from the outside in and let the area dry under a fan.
- Rotate the rug every few months so heavy furniture does not leave permanent dents.
Hand tufted rugs such as the Cadence Wool Rug sit between the two, soft and even with a dense pile that holds its shape. Our comparison of low and high pile rugs goes room by room.
Frequently asked questions
Is a thicker rug better quality?
No. Thickness shows pile height, not quality. Density and fibre matter more, and a dense low pile can outlast a loose deep one.
Will a deep pile rug work with a dining table?
A deep pile makes chairs harder to slide and catches crumbs, so a low pile or flatweave works better under a dining table.
How do you find a rug's pile height before buying?
Read the product description for how the pile is described, and order a swatch if one is offered. Measuring the swatch with a ruler gives you the real height.
Measure the door, then choose the depth. Material first, and the textures and solids when you want to compare.
