Shag Rugs: Pearl Fold and Burnt Sienna
A shag rug belongs in an Indian bedroom, where feet are bare and traffic is light, and rarely in a living room near an open balcony door. Rugberry's shag edit, Pearl Fold and Burnt Sienna, is built for the first kind of room.
In short
- Rugberry's shag rugs collection includes the Pearl Fold Wool Rug and the Burnt Sienna Wool Rug, both hand tufted in New Zealand wool.
- Pearl Fold starts from about ₹37,000 and Burnt Sienna from about ₹32,000 at Rugberry, both listed in 5x8 ft with any size made to order.
- A long pile rug suits a bedroom with light traffic; it is hard work in a dusty living room near a balcony or on a ground floor by the road.
- For depth with less upkeep, the handloom Plush Wool Rug offers a deep, quiet pile that is easier to vacuum than a true shag.
Here is where long pile works, where it becomes a chore, and how to keep it clean.
What makes a rug a shag rug?
A shag rug has a pile long enough that the yarn tips lie over rather than stand straight. Underfoot it feels deep and loose, and it hides the backing completely.

Most Rugberry hand-tufted rugs have a cut pile of around 14 to 16 mm, dense and upright. The rugs in the shag edit are visibly longer and shaggier in the photographs, and that changes how they feel, look and clean.
What are Pearl Fold and Burnt Sienna?
Both are hand tufted in New Zealand wool, both are in the Rugberry shag rugs collection, and both are listed in 5x8 ft with any size to order.

- Pearl Fold Wool Rug: from about ₹37,000. The photographs show a long ivory pile with brown diamond and triangle motifs.
- Burnt Sienna Wool Rug: from about ₹32,000. The product page describes a deep earthen red, warm without turning bright.
Where does a shag rug work in an Indian home?
A shag rug works best beside a bed, in a reading corner or in a quiet upstairs sitting room, anywhere feet are bare and traffic is light. It is at its best in the cool months, when tiled floors are cold underfoot.
In a bedroom, place a 5x8 ft shag across the lower two thirds of a queen bed, or along one side where you step out each morning. On a winter morning in Delhi, Chandigarh or a hill station home, that first step is the reason to buy long pile.
Long pile is the softest thing under bare feet, and the hardest to keep clean near an open door.
Where does long pile become hard work?
Long pile becomes hard work wherever dust, crumbs or pets are constant. The loose tips trap fine dust deep in the pile, where a quick vacuum does not reach.
- Near a balcony door or on a ground floor by the road: fine city dust settles daily and sinks in.
- Under a dining table: crumbs disappear and chairs catch.
- With a shedding dog or cat: hair winds into the tips and needs a rubber brush to lift.
- In a child's play area: beads and small toys vanish.
For those rooms, choose a low handloom wool rug over a shag, because dust sits on top of a low surface and lifts in one pass. Read more in our guide to rugs and dust in India.
Is a deep pile rug a good alternative to shag?
Yes. A deep pile handloom rug gives much of the softness of shag with an upright pile that is easier to clean. The Plush Wool Rug is Rugberry's example.
Plush is handloom woven in New Zealand wool with a deep, quiet pile, from about ₹40,000, in six sizes from 5x8 to 12x15 ft. In Chocolate it is a warm, dark brown that suits teak and walnut bedrooms. For a living room where you want depth but have a dusty city outside, choose Plush over a shag.
Deep pile of either kind shows the direction it was last brushed, so expect light and dark patches where people walk. That is the pile lying in different directions, not wear, and a gentle brush evens it out.
How do you clean a shag rug?
Vacuum a shag rug on suction only, slowly, in several directions, with the beater bar off. Long tips wrap around a spinning brush and pull out.
Once a month, shake a 5x8 ft shag outdoors or turn it face down and walk on the back to loosen deep dust, then vacuum the floor. Blot spills at once and rake the pile upright with your fingers once it dries.
Expect some loose fibre in the first weeks; this shedding eases with gentle vacuuming. For the full routine, see our page on shag rug care.
Frequently asked questions
Are shag rugs good for Indian summers?
Long pile feels warm, so a shag is most welcome in winter. In an air conditioned bedroom it stays comfortable through the year.
Do shag rugs collect more dust?
Yes. Loose long pile holds fine dust deeper than a low or upright pile, so a shag needs slower, more thorough vacuuming.
What sizes do Pearl Fold and Burnt Sienna come in?
Both are listed in 5x8 ft at Rugberry, and both can be made in any size to order.
Is a shag rug good with pets?
It is the hardest rug to keep free of pet hair. For a home with a shedding dog or cat, a low handloom or dense tufted wool rug is easier.
